Xterra bike porn, English style.

Yesterday I built my first hardtail (first bike I ever built too) under guidance of my mechanic. The plan was twofold; to learn many of the various jobs that I haven't attempted yet like gears, cables, headset, bb etc and to make a bike with as many English parts as possible (as this will probably be my last bike purchase prior to immigrating to Vancouver) and it was pretty successful. Whilst I watched the bb faces and the brakes posts being reamed I did pretty much everything else and what a sense of acheivement.

We couldn't go English with the zero stack headset, bottom bracket (as didn't want square taper), rims, tyres, chain, shifters or derailleurs but everything else was.

Just to bore you the build ended up as Pace RC303 frame with RC40 100-130mm forks, USE Atom bars, Orange grips, Hope mini mono brakes, Hope XC stem, Hope spacers and seat clamp, Hope Pro 2 hubs and rotors, Middleburn RS7 cranks and rings, USE Sumo carbon seatpost, USE pro elite saddle, (syncros headset, SKS XC600 bb, 2007 XT derailleurs and shifters, whippermann teflon coated connex chain, Stan's ZTR olympic rims and SS eggbeaters).

Some of the parts are pieces of beauty like the Middleburn chainset:

or the Hope billeted stem :

sweet front end:

Very apt headset cap given our destination;-)

Finished product prior to riding this morning: It's a very different ride than my iDrive 4 but is very rewarding with very surefooted handling, the combination of the short riding position and the adjustable fork making it a rapid ride. Unfortunately my rear tyre was shredded by a flint and we had already used up our spare inner tubes so I have yet to ride longer than an hour but things look promising.

Thanks Greg. Wow, they do look long in the final picture don't they! They are only 172cm crank arms but you can see better if you check the first picture of them.

actually, i thought they looked remarkably long in the first photo. and i asked because i have been riding (and loving) 180 mm cranks on my santa cruz mtb for quite a while (but i am average in height).

so this frame is UK-made? may i ask what the frame alone costs in dollars or euros?

The RC303 is the first Pace designed frame that has not been built in the UK, that regretably is the way things are nowadays. The frame is designed around their adjustable forks ans UK riding conditions, the price for the frame is £500 you can find more details that would interest you on their website https://www.pacecycles.com/...tID=1&subcat=459

that crank is sweet, and the hope stem is fer shure most bitchin' looking. i was surprised to see the bolts on mine rusting like mofo's after 6 months, tho -WTF ?

but - what, no framebuilders left who live in the UK ?? if it came from china it ain't porn.

( yer wheels are 3" too small too, bro ).

you do win bonus points for the cool background in the pic tho, pardner. not a ticky tacky urban sprawl suburb in sight !! nice !!!

As I am located on the coast I always replace bolts with ti bolts to prevent the corrosion issue. The pictures (save the stem) were taken at the mechanics workshop, and he is a framebuilder. I had narrowed the choice of frame between one of his ti hardtails or the Pace, after riding the Pace I decided that was the frame for me. I happen to think that the design is the important part rather than the location of the point of build for the frame.

The riding from his back door is superb both on and off road.
