Question for the ladies - De Soto clothes and fit?
Loyal customer that I am, I naturally want to spread the DeSoto love around. I, of course, am not a girl, so I'm a terrible judge of women's clothes.

My girlfriend wants some new running clothes, specifically tops (and sports bras). To the ladies of Slowtwitch:
Are DeSoto tops supportive? How's the fit? My girlfriend is not a tiny triathlete - 5'9", 137, 34C. Medium is usually a safe bet in other brands. Is DeSoto stuff going to work, or is she going to be unhappy in it and better off with something else for running in?

I love my De Soto shorts, but tried a De Soto top and didn't like it.

It chafes under the arms when I swim.

And, this is a vanity point but: It doesn't look as good as some of the other for-women top designs by Zoot, Orca, Louis Garneau, etc. The De Soto look is very, well, utilitarian. I particularly like the Zoot Long tri top for women, because it covers your whole back and doesn't leave you with a funny sunburn.

I really like my DeSoto tops and shorts. No issues with chafing or anything else I was in both at my 6-hour race last weekend. Zoot runs small so even the large doesn't fit well on me.

Is it supportive enough for running, if you're not a super-skinny typical triathlete? An odd question for me to ask, but if she hates the stuff, it's on me. She isn't going to swim in what she looks at as a sports bra, so I'm not worried about that so much as her being comfortable on long runs.

If she is ONLY going to run in the top, then get a running top, instead of a tri top.

Some of the more supportive running tops, with good built-in bras, include Nike and Champion.

I know women who will not run in ANY of the tri tops. They say that NONE of the tri tops are supportive. They end up having to wear a bra under their tri top. So, if there is no swimming involved, why bother with the tri top?

The sports bra, I love.

And no, I am not a super-skinny typical triathlete.

Hello,

Your input and candor is very appreciated, but do you mind if I ask you when it was that you last tried on our tops?

Hi Emilio,

The De Soto top I have is one I got on Ebay.

It looks like the style from about 3 years ago.

It fits great, but sometimes after I swim there are chafe marks where the fabric meets the skin under the armpit.

Yep I figured, that is why I asked. We redesigned all our garments before the 2005 season and then again for the 2006 season, so you are basing your opinion on old outdated and technologically obsolete products. We have come a long way since 3 years ago. I hope you will consider seeing how different our garments are now than they were back then.

The DeSoto stuff is awesome....the only thing is (personally) I find that the bottoms or Tri suits run small - However, this is based on Emilio's older stuff as well (Pre-2005). I think your gf will love it, but when you order run her sizes by their Customer Service staff. Great stuff & fun colors!

For 2006 we kept the size small the same,

made medium somewhere between last year's medium and large

and

made large bigger too.

I have some of those tops and even though they are a wee bit tight in the chest for me, they are still my favorites to run and cycle in. I'll have to check out your new line and start making my Christmas wishlist!

Thanks for your kind words. With this sale going happening on our website, there may not be anything left for Christmas....except for some new colors (pink and turquoise) in the Transition Packs!

Well, you'll be happy to know I just spent nearly $200 on your website. Your bike shorts are the best, so naturally I NEEDED a couple more, and a cycling jersey, and and....

Thanks for putting food in my refrigerator! I won't ever become a millionaire selling triathlon apparel, but I will be happy not being a millionaire if I can stay involved in triathlon and carve a modest living.

Emilio,

I have been a long time fan of your clothing. I've worn tri-tops, tri-shorts and skin suit. I think that your tri-shorts are the best around, I still wear a pair I've had since 2002. What makes them great is the thickness and durability of the fabric and the overall comfort.

I do have a complaint about a pair of tri-shorts I bought in 2004. It seems that stitching was revamped on the chamois and I must say it was very uncomfortable. I couldn't wear the shorts, they chafed too much. I guess I'm a little late in telling you about this, but I dropped out of training for a while. Now I'm in the market for new shorts and I will definitely shop DeSoto. Just thougth I'd let you know.

Nice plug :-)

I just ordered a bunch of De Soto & I made the mistake of letting my wife see the catalog. Now she has a De Soto shopping list.

Thanks for your input. 2004 wow....such a long time ago. We changed our garment stitching drastically in 2006 so you can be sure they will not chafe. Also keep in mind that chafing will occur if you are wearing garments a little on the loose side..any brand. That is to say, the more snug you wear your tri clothing the less likely they will chafe. Our stuff does not shrink, so it is best to buy it tight to begin with.
