The format, from Australia's "Like a Version" on the iconic JJJ radio station is a very Australian thing (not unique to Oz, but they've been doing it for a long time).
"The idea of Like A Version is pretty simple. We invite a musician or band into our studios, tell them to bring their instruments along, stick microphones in front of them and ask them to play one of their own compositions as well as a song they love by someone else."

Over the years it has produced some stellar covers, worthy of a thread like this on its own.

I was 13. I knew this was cool. I didn't know HOW cool.

Oh, and that was sweet. Zac Brown so smooth.

Note Bono in the sling, he had fallen from the stage a few nights earlier in DC and dislocated his shoulder. I saw them the following show in Foxboro and it was his first with the sling, he spent most of the show standing in place still feeling the effects of the fall but they still put on a great concert.

Why do I remember this so well? I had brought a date with me who I had just met about a week or so before the show and she’s sitting next to me now on the couch as I type this.

I didn't go through this whole thread, but if anyone likes classic songs with a pop-punk vibe, Me First and the Gimme Gimme's have made a solid career with awesome covers.

This is the way to cover a great song; reimagined in another genre altogether.

Really looking forward to hearing the whole album.
