It's an Australian thing?

The format, from Australia's "Like a Version" on the iconic JJJ radio station is a very Australian thing (not unique to Oz, but they've been doing it for a long time).
"The idea of Like A Version is pretty simple. We invite a musician or band into our studios, tell them to bring their instruments along, stick microphones in front of them and ask them to play one of their own compositions as well as a song they love by someone else."

Over the years it has produced some stellar covers, worthy of a thread like this on its own.

Since there's some love for Tame Impala here, here's a pretty excellent Arctic Monkeys cover:

And just in case there's any Arctic Monkeys fans, here's Chvrch covering their “Do I Wanna Know?”

and so on.....

Ah, so you know The Saints, then!

Memory lane. Loved the Saints. One of Oz's most underrated bands. To this day I have the Saints "Just like Fire Wood" and "Ghost Ships" on my workout mix. I wasn't aware of that Springsteen cover (sadly, I don't think its great).

Perhaps not everyone's cup of tea. But this is just pretty cool.

Note Bono in the sling, he had fallen from the stage a few nights earlier in DC and dislocated his shoulder. I saw them the following show in Foxboro and it was his first with the sling, he spent most of the show standing in place still feeling the effects of the fall but they still put on a great concert.

Why do I remember this so well? I had brought a date with me who I had just met about a week or so before the show and she’s sitting next to me now on the couch as I type this.

I didn't go through this whole thread, but if anyone likes classic songs with a pop-punk vibe, Me First and the Gimme Gimme's have made a solid career with awesome covers.

This is the way to cover a great song; reimagined in another genre altogether.

Really looking forward to hearing the whole album.

Bowie recorded Young Americans at Sigma Sound Studios to capture that certain "Philly Soul" he found here

This is a very nice rendition

Queued up a ton of Julia Jacklin on YouTube Music and was surprised with a cover of Book's Army of Me. Way better than the original? No. But not worse either. Had a great vibe to it,

I forget... what was the ruling on mashups?

Because this one is something else

"Jump" was recorded 30-something (almost 40) years ago

As great as Eddie was, improvements can - and should - be made

Because today is the 50th anniversary of one of the best pop songs ever recorded, here is Sarah Blasko's version (not better, but pretty sweet) of Bowie's Life on Mars?, recorded following his death in 2016.
