I haven't experimented with how it works for triathlon, but when I was swimming in high school this thing worked wonders. The key, though, is consistency. Since it's not a typical tool it's kind of hard to think about using it. 3 sets of 15 breaths (much harder than you think) once a day. Definitely helped me increase my lung capacity. Couldn't sprint the 50 free in a relay without taking at least a breath on the way back and I feel that it helped me get to the end. I know a triathlon isn't a sprint, but the point was that my lung capacity increased significantly.
It came with a detergent thing, but I can't remember where that is. It's essentially dish soap, though. To wash it just use warm soapy water.
