He backed up to iCloud, wiped phone and restored from iCloud. That fixed it.
Not a pain in the ass at all...

This has been a huge problem for me and my kids. We survive on texting these days -- who do I have to pick up and when. They can't take phone calls during the day, so texting is the only way. I've been fiddling with my settings and have signed on to iCloud. We'll see if this resolves it.

You should probably take down the picture of your phone number, unless you want to make some new friends...

If you look in settings, messages, there is a button that turns on SMS messaging. In addition to the iCloud issue, I discovered that my SMS messaging was turned off. iCloud on; SMS on . . hopefully this fixes it.

 if not, try the backup, wipe and restore method.

Go to "settings".

Turn off iMessage (in message settings)

Then reset network (general-reset-reset network)

When that's done turn on iMessage.

That worked for me.
