It's near Blasphemy because the original was, like, awesome, but, Reel Big Fish: Hungry Like the Wolf. I dig it.

Pretty much any cover by Emmylous Harris - I especially like her version of Steve Earle's "Goodbye" on Wrecking Ball.

Chromatics' version of Neil Young's "Into the Black" is fantastic.

Walt Mink's version of "Pink Moon" shreds.

Stevie Ray Vaughans cover of Voodoo Child by Jimi Hendrix is awesome. He is the only guy that can cover Jimi and make it sound better than the original!

Joe Cocker's cover of Love Is Alive. (Of course pretty much all of Cocker's songs are covers...)

This live version is outstanding: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LO4Gdkv040w

One of my random faves is Toots & the Maytals covering John Denver's "Take Me Home Country Roads"

Great crossing of regional flavors.

That's kinda the same as Thin Lizzy's, so not a big improvement

However, Metallica's "Turn the Page" really beats up on Bob Seger's ... I can imagine them being more alienated on the road than the Silver Bullet Band, who would probably look more like truck drivers in a diner someplace, than Metallica would with all the leather they'd be wearing

PLUS, "is it woman? Is it man?" is TOTALLY about Lars

It's not crazy different. But definitely heavier. I like it a lot better. Thin Lizzy sound almost whiney compared to Metallica.

Prince played a reworked Let's Go Crazy on the Billboard awards show recently. At least as good, if not better than the original:

Bonus points for an all-female band and smoking hot drummer.

And although it pains me to say it, because Kate Bush is a goddess, but Ra Ra Riot's version of Suspended in Gaffa is better: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LywyW0gLRX8

All-girl backing band is nothing new for him, really ... remember Wendy & Lisa and Sheila E?
