"Both the Animals and Santa Esmeralda's version of "Dont Let Me Be Misunderstood" are better than Nina Simone's original."
-----------------------------

I wouldn't say "better" as much as I would say VERY different. Nina Simone's live version is awesome, but it is almost a completely different song compared to Santa Esmeralda or the Animals.

I have:

"Sympathy for the Devil" covered once by GnR and once by David Byrne [who also does "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" in the same show]

"Are You Experienced" by Los Lobos

There's a band D'Kid likes called Everlife, who do a GREAT cover of "Strangers Like Me" [Phil Collins, from "Tarzan"]

Some nuggets from archive.org

"Dancing with Myself" - Warren Zevon

"The Battle Without Honor or Humanity [from Kill Bill]" - Particle

"Eminence Front" - New Monsoon

Janes Addiction did a kick ass live cover of Sympathy for the Devil on their first ever release.

I'll add to the list of those noting The Man in Black's cover of "Hurt". Johnny's version was far superior to NIN's.

OK so maybe this is not way better, or even better than the original, but it feels good

Cake did a good cover of War Pigs.

And I second the reference to Richard Cheese covers - love that guy.

Here's an old Carter Family C/W tune that was also done by Hank Williams, Elvis and Shiana Twain. IMHO, this version by Willie Nelson is by far the best.

RHCP's Under The Bridge was a remake? I never knew.

But, if it hasn't been mentioned yet, Higher Ground may be the best remake in modern music history. When an artist(s) can take a crazy good song and make it even better, that's an accomplishment.

A little darker/ heavier:
Lacuna Coil covering Enjoy The Silence.
Most of the Nativity In Black Sabbath cover album- Notably Type O Negative's Black Sabbath, Biohazard's After Forever, and Ministry's Supernaut.
The Beatles originals I dont like, but almost any cover of them is AWESOME. Notably Aerosmith's Come Together and Type O's Cinnamon Girl.

Metallic's Garage Days covers are outstanding. Especially Turn The Page, but Stone Cold Crazy is great as well. I like their version of Tuesday's Gone, but can't say it's better.

I do like Gn'R's cover of Sympathy For Devil. The original makes me change the station.

The Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here cover? Different, yes, but in no way, shape, or form better. Much less WAY better.

Nowhere near as good as Faith No More's live version. Transcendent.

Agreed. Annie is pretty much a damn good singer. Among the best ever female vocalists.
