Girl, You'll be a Woman Soon - Urge Overkill (originally Neil Diamond)

Although I like that version, it is not possible for anyone or any group to cover a Neil Diamond song better than the master himself. In fact, it's generally know that all performing artists live in fear that Neil will cover one of their songs and sink them into oblivion.

Originally recorded by Sonny Curtis and the Crickets. Regardless, the Clash version is now the standard.

Simple Man.

Original - Lynard Skynard
Cover - Shinedown. Somewhat accoustic with one of the most amazing vocal performances ever recorded. They also have an excellent video on their site and on Utube.

I really liked George Harrison's but this is also good.

I am also thinking Leslie Feist - Inside and Out is better than the BeeGees's

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds

first Elton John covered it - - - then Shatner blew the cover right off

Agreed. And although any version is better than Leonard Cohen, I have yet to hear anyone come close to Buckley.

"Hit me baby one more time" Travis version (original Britney Spears). Actually makes this song beautiful.

"Never Let Me Down Again" Smashing Pumpkins version (original Depeche Mode is actually pretty awesome also). Kind of creepy.

"Higher Ground" RHCP version, sorry Stevie

and finally, The Ramones "Acid Eater's" album is one of the best collection of cover songs ever, all 60s type stuff. I have not heard all the originals, but this may be the finest work by the Ramones.

I'm sure the fans of the original would cringe, but these really were great renditions of incredible songs.
Under the Bridge is an original.

"All Along the Watchtower: Jimi Hendrix version is better than Bob Dylan original "
----------------------------------

The Tom Landa & The Paperboys' version is an excellent cover:

The audio in this video pretty much sucks, but it can be found on "A Nod to Bob" which can be previewed here:

I should also mention Dave Mason's very good version.

That would be The Sundays. Had to be like 15 years ago, I was in college. I kind of like that version. Not better than the original though.
