If you haven't yet, give a listen to the guitar work of David Gilmour in Floyd's "Shine On", "Sorrow", or "Time" (just to name a few). Once you experience the soundscape, you'll know why I put him on the list.
Ok, I'll admit it - I'm a Brit who knows nothing about Pink Floyd. Any recommendations for albums to start with? Good grief, I just called it an album - how badly does that age me?
Nick ------------------------------------------------------------------------
You're a Brit and don't know the Floyd? Isn't that sacrilege? Just kidding.
For newer stuff, I'd go with "the Division Bell". For older stuff, I'd go with the tried and true "Dark Side of the Moon".
Any Floyd questions I'd be happy to answer for you.
But no matter what, go get some floyd and put it on when you have some time in the car alone, or when you can lie down and listen without distractions. Nothing else like it.
"Jimi Hendrix is the greatest ever! everyone who disagrees is just a right-wing extremist, and a complete idiot!"
I'm a right-wing extremist and although not complete, I am an idiot. And I worship Hendrix. Saw him at Monterey when no one knew who he was, and again at Winterland. His stuff was awesome even if you weren't on drugs...
Greatest ever? That might be a stretch. I'd give him third behind Segovia and Atkins. Cousin Elwood - Team Over-the-hill Racing Brought to you by the good folks at Metamucil and Geritol...
If that's "rock" guitarists, I'd add Satriani at the top and swap Knopfler for Michael Bloomfield.
If it's ALL guitarists, I'd have to lose your whole list. Cousin Elwood - Team Over-the-hill Racing Brought to you by the good folks at Metamucil and Geritol...
you saw him??? darn, you are like cerveloguy, you are OOOLLD :-) born the year he died...
Note on Logics
I said: everyone who disagrees is a ring-wing extremist. But you can be a right wing ext. and agree. It's just because it's an implication, not an equivalence. If I had said you can disagree if and only if you are a RWE then that would mean, you can possibly like Hendrix!
L: like hendrix
R: you are a RWE
I said
not L --> R (not L implies R) which is equivalent to not R --> L (if you are not a RWE, then you like hendrix)
Segovia...completely agree...He was asked once: how do you get to play as well as you mr segovia?
answer: it's easy. start playing when you are 4, 6hrs a day until you are 70.
Geeze, and here I'm the guy who criticizes people for weak syllogisms. I walked right into that one.
Old, you wanna hear OLD?
I gave guitar lessons to a kid in San Mateo years ago. He was dating my GFs little sister. I was a local rock star, and he wanted to be like me. I also lent him my amp and some mics, and I worked with his band on harmony and arrangements. He was in the eighth grade, I was a senior in HS.
The kid? Neal Shon Cousin Elwood - Team Over-the-hill Racing Brought to you by the good folks at Metamucil and Geritol...
According to google: That is the guy from Journey, also played with Santana once or twice. ____________________________________________
"which is like watching one of your buddies announce that he's quitting booze and cigarettes, switching to a Vegan diet and training for triathalons ... but he's going to keep snorting heroin." Bill Simmons, ESPN
"According to google: That is the guy from Journey, also played with Santana once or twice."
THAT shows how old I am. The guys my age that I played with (Bloomfield, Hendrix, Garcia, etc.) are mostly all dead, and even the young budding musician that I helped groom (Schon) is over the hill around here. I'm gettin' outa here while I still can...
Anybody seen my walker? Cousin Elwood - Team Over-the-hill Racing Brought to you by the good folks at Metamucil and Geritol...
I thought schon played with santana in the early to mid 70's before going on Journey? And I thought I was feeling old since I knew exactly who you were talking about....only I was in the 8th grade when 'escape' was released...LOL
and for Francois...I have the greatest respect for Hendrix as a guitarist because he was such an inovator, but there are much better technicians these days.
Also, what about Randy Rhodes and Ritchie Blackmore?
I am a bass man myself....big fan of the late Jaco Pastori as well as Geddy Lee , Chris Squire, John Entwhistle, Stanley Clark and Flea

"I thought schon played with santana in the early to mid 70's before going on Journey?" - - He got his start with Carlos.
"And I thought I was feeling old since I knew exactly who you were talking about....only I was in the 8th grade when 'escape' was released...LOL" - - I was in HS, and playing with Mike Shrieve, who then went on to be Santana's drummer.
"I have the greatest respect for Hendrix as a guitarist because he was such an inovator, but there are much better technicians these days." - - True and not true. Wes Montgomery said that it isn't the notes, but he silence between them that makes the music. Hendrix had a way of putting it together, and then he invented virtually all of the psychedelic sounds. He was the first to use wah and fuzz together, and he used to use stereo sound so that you'd hear the music move around the room.
That ability to create memorable melodies is what made Joe Walsh so awesome. Sure, McLaughlin and DiMeola are faster, but then so was Alvin Lee. I think Larry Carlton may be one of the best in that regard. I even hear people copying his style these days.
