1 day to go. What did you learn this year?

I learnt that cash is king, and that the 3-6 months of savings is rubbish when things go really badly wrong.

Starting something new, that’s hard and requires years of practice is really reinvigorating.

Making other people better is a lot more interesting than just yourself, but you have to fix yourself first.

Recovering financially from using your 3-6 months of cash reserves is tough too. Been there, still trying to recover 2 years later...

I learned a lot about myself - some good, some not so good. After kid 4 was born and the initial run with the grandparents came to an end, I had to do it all because my husbands work schedule is just insane (self employed business of 1). No family close so it's just us here in paradise. Still deciding if paradise is worth the trade off of family being closer. I also learned I'm a LOT tougher than I thought I was. My 2018 goal is to be a master at staying at and hopefully under our monthly budget. I spend too much at the grocery store every single time!

That life is too short to put up with crap and you should ask for what you want. And that when you find the right person who motivates you, keep them.

Lastly, sitting with 18,000 of your best friends at the very first ever Stanley Cup final game for your team is the best feeling in the world. Sweeping the Blackhawks in the first round is a close second. 🤣

It really pays to get multiple quotes when you need to replace your home HVAC system. The first quote was for $14K. We ended up with someone who did everything for $8K.

On 1 - in the end I suspect that will be the least of my problems because when we have sold up everything I will never put myself in this situation again

On 2 - we are having that very conversation. Live in South of France and whilst London is only 2 hours, parents are ageing and some other factors are making me think moving closer might be a good idea

You do know the expression (or rule of thumb) is to have 6 months of Spending in the bank for a rainy day. For most Americans 6 months of savings would not be much money.

But once you start dipping into that you need to start cutting spending and getting a plan for months 7 and on. One concept is if you have 6 months spending saved, then if you lose your job in a tough market you can cut spending way back and actually have a year of spending saved. Which really is probably a better way of planning, (IE you should have 1 yr of essential spending saved up for a rainy day)

Good luck.

Due to a variety of events I have probably burnt through 2-3 years of cash in 18 months.

At various points in last 5 years I've had decades of liquid assets on hand but events, dear boy, events.......

Anyway, no matter. Money is stressful. Will all be sorted in next 6-12 months but that does not help the anxiety

Still processing the events of the yr to figure out what I have learned.

figured out so far,
Life sucks, people die, pet's die, were all going to die. More stuff, sucks... wish we would have lived in a smaller house and accumulated less crap.

Literally just figured this one out so moving it up to the figured out so far section -- when the 5yr and 10yr goals are foggy and nebulous, the actions of the day are hesitant and shaky.

left to figure out.

So whats the goal, after keep the species surviving and having raised the kids,

Watching a family member be ravaged by dementia is a bitch.

Months of consistent sleep deprivation really alters mood and worldview.

Growth rarely comes from a place of comfort. 2017 was a good year but a tough year. I had been considering a career change for a few years and getting laid off was the push I needed to do it.

Starting a new business is never easy, but this time around for some strange reason, its seems harder and more stressful than ever.
Maybe Im just turning into my old man who stressed about everything, including stressing about not being stressed enough!

That despite the way I feel about myself I AM a good person, it’s ok to let myself be loved, taking a chance on myself was the best thing I could have done and that my kids are and will always be the most important thing to me.

As for you, I sincerely hope that you do get yourself back to where you need to be. Based on many of your posts I assumed that you were tremendously stable etc financially.

That's awesome. I have some concrete projects around my house I plan on doing polished concrete for. Outdoor tables, bar area for the deck, small stuff I can cast in my garage. Kind of have the idea to do the kitchen countertops in concrete, but, I just wont have the time to do all the labour myself.

I love working with concrete in unique settings, the possibilities are endless.

This is the service I use for bigger projects.
