Nobody washes their own car anymore.

At least not around here.

Been waiting an hour to get the 4Runner detailed and I have two more cars to get done today.

There’s only 3 dudes drying it right now and there should be at least 4.

I just wait for the start of school year. There's always a team or group doing a fund raiser. You only need to give them "a donation", and if you give them $20 they think it's great. Of course they don't do the world's greatest job, but since this is one of the few times during the year that I wash my vehicle, it's always an improvement, and you will be in and out in less time than it takes to grab a Big Mac and a Coke.

People wash their cars, either by themselves or pay someone else to do it?

Almost always wash my own car. Sometimes in driveway , sometimes in the self wash at car wash place.

Almost always take my wife’s 4Runner through the car wash. It’s easier and let’s me justify expense. Her car is a PITA to dry after self wash

People are on the roads heading out of town and will have their rides washed before the new year. I always wash mine at home.

I wash mine almost every time. Occasionally, I will use a certain carwash that I have vetted thoroughly during the winter. Other than that, I hand wash it every time.

My 4 year old loves to wash our car. Only the bottom half gets done though.

Wash it on your lawn, or driveway (on your driveway divert the runoff to your lawn) seems the law is about what goes down the drain, so don't let it get to the drain. Or block the drain till the water portion evaporates off.

Toyota gives me a free car wash. Why would I want to wash my own car?

I'd freeze my ass off if I tried to wash my own car. There are multiple automatic car washes on my commute to work and at the gas stations I go to.

Why wash my own car. The machine does it well enough.

Yeah, I'm familiar with the purpose of the law and how to get around it. Most people aren't even aware if it. Warnings and education are usually given rather than fines (only about a dozen fines per year. Usually for dumping waste).

But it's just easier to stop at one of the numerous self wash places and spend a couple bucks a month. Especially in winter.

I (mostly) enjoy washing our cars. Clay bar that thing once every quarter or so. Wax once every couple of months. It's satisfying and looks noticeably better than what the auto wash places can do.

My car is always clean when it leaves the driveway. I don’t have the time or patience to have it done anywhere else. I haven’t been to a barber since the early 90s for the same reason. I cut my own hair. aaaaaand "I always have to clean up”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWbRmtXWQfg

I have been going through car wash machines for years. No issues. I feel confident in continuing this practice.

Same here. In winter, if completely coated in salt, I will run it through the touchless car wash just to get all the crap off. But, that is rare. Usually hand wash it at home until the temp drops below freezing, then hand wash at the self wash car wash.

For the vast majority of people, this is just fine. If you ever hand-detail a car, you see (a) how much crap the machines leave on the car and (b) how much damage they do. It really is disturbing. Run it through the machine wash, then clay bar it and see what comes off. Hell, run it through the machine, then hand dry with a white cloth. Then check out the scratch and swirl marks.

Now, again, for the VAST majority of people, this is a non-issue. The car looks nice and that's good enough. So, I certainly am not knocking this practice. I used them for years. But, once I started detailing my own cars, I was quite shocked and appalled.

Ok. The other issue is that I get a new car every 14,000 kms now so damage will be limited. And I just don't care enough, I guess...

I have never been to a car wash that could get my wheels clean. Never.

California drought restrictions.

My local water agency banned it for a time. The ban has since been lifted, but I suspect people during that time have formed new habits.
