(NOW WITH VIDEO) I can now juggle!
Recently I did a 3 day corporate leadership retreat / training. It was the usual good refresher but nothing I haven't seen before.
Except for one thing.
The facilitators did an exercise on commitment.
As part of that we were asked if we would publicly commit to learn a new skill - namely to juggle. And as I never back down from a stupid challenge, I committed. It took a few days but I'm now a juggler.
Yay Me!

I actually find that pretty cool. The great thing about taking on new skills is that the learning curve is usually pretty steep, so a small spell of commitment can usually get you to reasonable competency.

We were snowed in one weekend last winter, and I encouraged my daughter to commit to juggling a soccer ball. She went from barely getting 2 touches up to 15-20 touches in a 36 hour period.

Juggling 3 is fun, when you get bored try 4.

I was showing my kids my juggling skills last night and tried throwing in ball number 4. It was a disaster. One little bean bag landed on my 6 month old daughters head. Needless to say she was very angry with me. I'll have to try when she's napping!😂😂

My 6 & 8 year olds try sometimes. It's mayhem!

I know how to juggle 4 but cant do it. Need more practice. It is a different technique than juggling 3.

But can you ride a unicycle?

PS. you're well on your way to being a hipster.

How does Danny Hart sit down with balls that big?

Big deal. Duffy's been juggling Trump's balls in his mouth for over a year now.

You can teach an old dog new tricks. This year I am going to learn French and my French exchange student is gonna help.

Nice! I really enjoy the challenge of picking up a new skill. I learned to juggle 3 as a little kid and then 4 as a middle schooler. I then decided to learn 5 at about 35yrs old. 5 is not easy, but youtube is such an amazing resource for learning stuff like that. I've never gotten solid at 5, but on a good day I could make 40-50 throws. It goes fast for me though, if I haven't practiced recently I'm lucky to even make 10 throws. I also was given a unicycle on my 30th birthday and learned as an adult. Was really fun to see how your body figures that out. I'm good enough at juggling that unicycle+juggling 3 balls was a no brainer.

While riding a unicycle.

Or in a plane or on a train.

Pink? Maybe. Maybe not. You decide.

I played tennis in high school. We all learned to juggle over a couple of long bus rides one season. It's something that can be self taught with an hour or two of patience.

Been juggling since I was 10. Nothing special but I'm fairly competent. I can also do card tricks and some slight-of-hand tricks.

So I'll always have that to fall back on.

been trying to learn 4 on and off for a few months. And by "trying" I mean 5 minutes of effort every month or so. I can do 2 with 1 hand (sounds awesome, right?) very well on the right, so-so on the left. not together, though, my throws aren't consistent enough to get a good rhythm. I'll fail after 1 or 2 cycles.

First 1 ball tossed from left to right hand and back. A nice parabolic arc just above and in front of my forehead. That took 1 minute coz most guys can do that.

Then 2 balls, one from left to right and a fraction of a second later the other ball right to left.
That took about an half an hour of practice to get right.

Then 3 balls. I start with 2 in left hand and 1 in right. Then same as 2 balls but then throw the third before the second arrives. The trick was to release the balls quickly - never hold one, always throw. That took about 1 hour over two days to get to where i could do 5 or 6 cycles

The facilitators provided us with juggling beanbags. Hackysacks would work i think. Tennis balls will work ok, but may have a tendency to bounce out of your hands

Something that will help also is to kneel facing a wall. The tendency is to throw the balls forwards. Kneeling against a wall will train you not to do that which is a critical component to success.

That's the key and the hardest part to learn. You have to develop a muscle memory and rhythm, if you have to think about what you are doing, it doesn't work.

Golf balls work really well if you are outside. Heavy enough to make your hand close when it hits and not bouncy. But breaks lamps when you are inside. :) Eggs work well too, and as an added bonus they don't roll away when you drop them.

If you stand facing a wall it keeps you from throwing way out in front of yourself and running after the balls.

If your balls are too light your hand won't close around them as easily and they bounce off.

When you get bored try basketballs or something like 6 pound bowling balls.

I'm beginning to think that we are much more fucked than I thought.
