Unfortunately PDX is changing for the worst. Not what it was ten years ago. The city has done a pathetic job addressing the homeless and mentally ill populations.

I'm not sure our time is all that special. I'm in the middle of a book on Kit Carson that covers the U.S.-Mexican War, the Civil War, and various conflicts and "treaties" with the various American-Indian tribes (Kit had quite a life!), and the general combination of bigotry, lies, fear, greed, and willingness to knife dudes in the middle of the night makes today's violence seems relatively on par.

Name just one major city in this country where the rate of mental illness hasn't increased significantly over the last couple of years....and often dramatically.

Just one. And no fake news please.

I would hope other places deal with it better. It was the healthcare systems here that stepped in and took measures after a lot of nothing by the city. In more than those ways, the city has dropped the ball which has affected the quality of life. Granted this is not unique. Metro area grows by 100 people per day, something has to give. I'm bailing when it is time to retire.

Growth is just one contributor.
It is the disintegration of communities (both due to sociological and monetary reasons) and hence the Society as we used to know it.

This was TheForge's thing. I disagree. Not to minimize this stabbing, but there have been stabbings for nearly all history. And bombings as long as their have been bombs.

And historically, terms like "community" and "it takes a village" applied only to narrowly defined communities. E.g. people who look like you and follow the same religion. Only very recently (e.g. hundred or so years) has it expanded much beyond that. Because there are frictions in that expansions, I don't think we need to call in the plague.

Also, we like to think we live in special, different times. I don't think we're special. We're dealing with the same old shit humans have always had to deal with.

Most of the U.S. lives in safer conditions than at any time in U.S. history by any measurable metric. We're just so used to safety we've become kind of paranoid drama queens.

I am not saying we deserve a plague but with the way we are abusing the earth and populating it, ebola was just a taste of that. Given you cannot influence some folks to do the right thing, it will only be a matter of time. My lifetime, maybe not. Violence has been there forever granted. I don't see that changing. Technology and media is not helping.

Increased tolerance and the prevalence marijuana plays a role in the increase of mental illness. Borderline schizophrenia can be pushed over the line with pot. Here in Washington, where it's legal, mental health counselors are busier than ever and they are seeing a correlation.

Oh. My. God.

So much ignorance.

Most of that article is complete garbage and cites studies that are complete garbage.

Okay. Well that ends that then. Studies garbage, me ignorant, conversation over.

BTW how do find the time to review each study that comes out about everything, therefore becoming an authority on all matters? I didn't say "pot makes man go on killing spree". My suggestion is merely this; it is a contributing factor in increases of mentally ill out in the streets. If you think it is impossible for a borderline schizophrenic to be pushed over the edge with THC, then you are willfully ignoring what is entirely possible.

Well, studies show that brain chemistry and also molecular and neuronal cell response is altered with high ;eve;s of THC. so there is that.
Several peer reviewed studies, actually.

With the legalization, we entered one of the biggest unreglemented and unsupervised medical trials of all times...

As a Neuroscientist, I am Beyond excited about that....

Will also be interesting to see rates of lung cancer due to the inhalation of carcinogens. Having been illegal they have not been able to do the studies. In Wa they are asking for volunteers so they can test new means of detection, trying to determine cutoff limits. A little late but better than never.

Only one of the teenage girls was Muslim. Granted the mentally ill person was not of mind to not jump to conclusions.

I'm pretty sure more users smoke marijuana than limit themselves to vaping.

Results: Overall, 7.2% of respondents reported current marijuana use; 34.5% reported ever use. Among current users, 10.5% reported medicinal-only use, 53.4% reported recreational-only use, and 36.1% reported both. Use of bowl or pipe (49.5%) and joint (49.2%) predominated among current marijuana users, with lesser use of bong, water pipe, or hookah (21.7%); blunts (20.3%); edibles/ drinks (16.1%); and vaporizers (7.6%); 92.1% of the sample reported combusted-only marijuana use

Weed is more commonly vaporized in the form of pure THC oil (which may not even be carcinogenic at all) and eaten (which obviously has nothing to do with lungs) than it used to be. Of the people I know who "smoke weed" (and it's a lot of people) very few of them actually smoke weed.

It's amazing to me how many people pretty much know almost nothing about this stuff.

Stop watching TV maybe?

We have the LR for gathering knowledge.

Everyone smokes it. All the fancy ways are nice but edibles outside of a legal state are hard to get and pain in the ass to make. The vaporizers are too expensive and annoying to set up. smoking is cheap and fast.

The people I see are driving and smoking, not vaping and driving (as they pass me while I am out on the bike, a little unnerving), smoking as they walk through parks, smoking on their way to the max, etc. If I had to theorize, the older ones (at a different point in their lives) smoke or vape at home, younger scofflaws despite the laws that they are not to smoke in public places or drive while smoking, still do, and most likely are smoking (easy to confirm by sight and smell). Too many kids (say 16-25 y/o ish) around here smoke on a daily basis. Also easy to confirm. Again theory on the split but the young ones out in public are obvious.

I guess we will find out tomorrow when they charge the guy, whether it is strictly a mental imbalance or combination of things.

Actually he's correct and the study is correct. Schizophrenia and pot is a problem. But hey, you "vape" so that makes you an expert. Damn those Harvard folks who actually studied the issue.

Read the study, don't sound like such an uneducated buffoon.

It doesn't say pot makes everyone schizophrenic. What is does say, and what has been proven true. Ingesting today's high levels of THC can bring on schizophrenia and other phsycosis in some people who have not been previously diagnosed. It can also have severe affects, sometimes violent affects on those who have been diagnosed. One of the reasons so many counselors do not want to treat PTSD. Do some research into subjects before spouting off.

Does the fact that there are a heck of a lot more of us now make a difference? Not special, but certainly different than in the past.

Halfbaked thought of the day (I'm open to being proven wrong): Does the fact that there are more of us now = a higher number of those with mental and violence issues = a higher number of violent incidents like this? I.e., if, say, .%5 of people are insane and violent, there are more insane and violent people now because the population is larger. Therefore, more insane and violent people = more violent acts perpetrated by that small fraction (that is now a substantial number of people). Let me know if this doesn't make sense (like I said, it's halfbaked thought typed out stream of consciousness).

War is god

FWIW, my place in Idaho is 10 minutes from Washington, where recreational pot is legal. Most people who partake smoke it. In Idaho, Washington, and just about everywhere else that isn't Duffy's living room.

To add to this very important weed/Idaho data set we're building - we're about 10 minutes away from the WA border as well. I don't know anyone who smokes all the time but I do know plenty of people who smoke occasionally. They all smoke and/or (who am I kidding..it's the "and") use edibles.

My guess it people who are really dedicated to their weed would be much more likely to vape, but that is not going to be the majority.
