That is really gonna suck for a while. I hope I don't have to drive through Atlanta anytime soon.

250,000 vehicles pass that section in a normal day. Going to be chaos for a while. Who new Marta could be so popular after all?

Well, that wasn't too bad. Regular 30 minute commute turned into 45 minutes with a stop off for pastry and a coffee. (shout-out to the best bakery in the ATL, Alon's Bakery)
Thanks goodness I already know all the backroads and backroads of the backroads.
As for getting through Atlanta, as someone said above, you well probably just go around 285 then I-575 to 75South, assuming you are headed for central FL, if the PanHandle you would keep going around until you hit 85South.
The collapse happened on the 85 North bound section, but the South bound is currently closed. i think they are waiting for smoke to clear or inspecting the southbound side to make sure of no damage. It will probably be open by Sunday and you won't have to do 285 and you can just come right through town heading south. But just in case be prepared to take 285.
Worse thing about this whole situation is having to console a crying Kindergartener this morning. Dumb school system cancelled school(even though city of Atlanta schools stayed open) and he was suppose to have a field trip to the zoo today.

I think that they were worried about all the extra surface street traffic. We have multiple schools within spitting distance of the interstate.
Of course, this is the same schools(as do most in Atlanta) that cancels school at the slightest hint of snow(ice).
But I'm guessing they just wanted to start Spring break a day early and deal with the traffic/bus issues when the kids return in a week and a half.

I live in Atlanta too but don't have to commute - thank goodness. I believe it will have a huge impact on 75. With the Braves and Peach Pass construction on 75/575...adding in the 85 traffic will just make it worse for a while. Do you have any idea how long a bridge like that takes to reconstruct?

Yes. We will be cancel school for those as well. Even the slushy kind.
I once heard that a tractor trailer full of packing peanuts turned over on 75 and Cobb county cancelled schools cause they thought it was snow.

My brother-in-law and his family moved to GA a couple of years ago and he was down there scoping out houses when the big ice and snow storm happened.. he said he was sitting in traffic wondering what the big deal was while people were losing their minds and stuff was getting shut down.

So is everyone else. Google Navigation is showing I-285 East to be bumper to bumper. But there is no good way to avoid this.

Unless he takes I-26 down to I-95. Avoid Atlanta like the plague. I might consider that if it looks like things won't be getting any better by Sunday. That is if he's heading for the central or east part of FL. If he's headed for the Panhandle he is doomed.

Funny. I looked at that too but thought that was way too far. But who knows time-wise? Rick is from Panama City. He's got a long day, regardless.

This is just going to push all traffic out onto the ring road (285) which will become intolerable--but as Hirohito put it "we must bear the unbearable." I HATE driving up thru ATL but the interstate system is constructed here such that it's all but inevitable that you do so. When I ride my moto up to N. GA to go camping and fly fishing I try to hit ATL about 10:00a.m, get in the left lane and pin the throttle--usually you have the 'option' of going thru the city or around it on the ring road. Now there will be only one option for months and months. It will be terrible traffic on 285 cause once the first jackass swerves across five lane of traffic to make their exit *causing the inevitable crash* that route too will be jacked up like hogan's goat.
So for my spring moto trip up to fly fish the upper reaches of the Hooch I'm gonna map out a day long scenic backcountry route and try to find some good sights and good BBQ and totally avoid the shit show that is gonna be ATL traffic for the next few months.

Nahhhh, schools and neighborhood are good here. Plus it makes my wife's commute easier.
Granted, I'm only about 10-12 miles from work as is.
They may have a section of paved bike paths finished before the interstate is repaired. Then I'll be able to ride almost the whole way to work on nice bike paths.

I'd love to live close to my work. However, the house prices in this particular area are insane. So I drive 45 minutes.

But it would be so hipster. Plus, think of the property value increase when the area is gentrified.

Nope, they are tearing the whole thing down in both directions.
But everyone knows this is a false-flag operation because fire can't destroy steel and concrete structures. This was a controlled demolition! Open your eyes and educate yourselves sheeple!!!
