ISP's can soon sell your browser history
https://arstechnica.com/...tory-to-advertisers/

---
The US Senate today voted to eliminate broadband privacy rules that would have required ISPs to get consumers' explicit consent before selling or sharing Web browsing data and other private information with advertisers and other companies
---

The bill heads off to the House. If they vote along party lines, expect a new era of ISP's providing crappier service and profiting grossly off data that doesn't necessarily belong to them.

And if you aren't using a VPN in today's world, you deserve to have the government know what you do.

I use Adblock and never get any ads but I heard that Adblock does something commercial with the info they collect on you but since it blocks all the ads I'm not sure why I should care.

I have tried a couple VPN services. Some free, some paid. All of them severely hamper the speed of my network. Which do you use, and have you experienced this as well?

Long Chile was a silly place.

Yup, I have noticed that as well, however, anytime I am streaming I am doing that on my Roku or Apple TV. Anything I do on my work computer either goes through my work VPN (fast) or one I purchased which does degrade the speed, but not enough it impairs the performance of looking at youtube or slowtwitch. :)
It is a trade off at this point, you can be free and unencumbered but open to the world, or secure yourself and have to deal with a small degradation in network speeds.

Make you look into your VPN as well, some of them store your usage as well and will give it up on request from a government agency.

If you use a vpn your speed WILL BE comprised, the extent depends on the VPN and on the servers of theirs you can attach to.

I think the entire situation is BS and almost no one cares. We lost the war on privacy and it was never fought.

The difference between strava, google, bing selling your data and your ISP is, you can choose to use that website or not. You generally have little to no choice about your ISP

Also, your ISP will have way more information on you.

I use IP Vanish. The only issue is some web sites, like Netflix, Amazon Prime for example uses location and then blocks their service. The nice thing is, if you use Kodi you dont need Netflix or Amazon Prime for streaming. They even make a VPN client you can install on your fire tv sticks and boxes. never had any issues with slowness while using the VPN. At least none that I have noticed. They say they dont keep logs either so it seems to be safe..

Bullshit. In the last four hikes I've lived in I had multiple choices.

I don't recall but are you even a resident of the us?

Not currently, but wife and kids are US citizens. Live in Canada right now.

Yes that law doesn't directly affect me at the moment, but sorry TheForge, I still have an opinion.

Is that even a thing anymore? I was trying to think of if there are still any dial up internet companies out there. Where I live, you have a choice of 3 high speed ISPs... Time Warner.. Verison DSL or Verison FIOs. But you have to be lucky enough to live in a spot where FIOs in installed. If not its not a choice. They have stopped installing it my area. The cable ISP from Time Warner is so much better than DSL there really is only one choice if you want a high speed ISP.

The amount of choices you have will depend on where you live.

We'll move somewhere else or contribute to the bottom line of the company that was gracious enough to provide you a service.

Besides aren't their applications and software that can redirect your info.

If you are in a rural or semi-rural area in Canada you will likely have only one decent choice.

I think the point I'm trying to make is, yes it sucks. Yes, there should be more protections. And the reality is, there are already laws that exist for this, but in my opinion aren't really strong enough. But medical history is protected by HiPPa. Your porn addiction or Netflix viewing history is protected by the Video Privacy Act (Enacted after Robert Bork wasn't confirmed). Personal information like name, address, phone number, etc, must be secured by whoever possesses it else they are subject to fines and penalties. Anybody they release that info must also have such protections in place. Your location has to be specifically authorized on a case by case bases.

These are all protections that exist well beyond this law. THIS LAW basically makes ISPs on par with other services you utilize. This isn't ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF REPUBLICANS SCREWING AMERICANS like Dan would have you believe, nor is it a revelation of the earth falling. Most already believed this info was collectible and saleable by ISPs since it is for pretty much everyone else.

Your speed was hampered because of the protocols your vpn used and how far the server was from your location. If you are using more protocols then your privacy would be better protected. You should pick a VPN that has servers close to your location. I have been using purevpn along with tor to protect my privacy. If you dont have either of these, i would recommend getting one soon
