I want to have a beer with the former President
Quote | Reply
It is well known I have never, very agreed with the politics of former President Obama. In addition, I never had the desire to meet the guy. I did not think I would enjoy him. I've change. I would love to have a beer with President Obama and have the opportunity to chat. Not sure, exactly, why the revelation. Something about him since he left office. Still despise his politics. Has nothing to do with The Donald.

My feelings about Presidents during my "political" lifetime:

Reagan - Would not have a beer. Would just sit and stare in utter awe like a love-sick adolescent.

Bush I - Don't want to have a beer with him. Want a cup of coffee and just let him talk while I soak it up.

Clinton - Oh HELL yeah! I would kill to toss a few back with him.

W - Oh HELL yeah! But, I think I would drink whiskey with him.

Obama - Microbrew with a big selection in a very quiet corner with plenty of time to get to know him. I think I would really, really enjoy that.

Dunno why this popped into my head, but I've been obsessing over it since last night for some reason.

I think any of the former Presidents would be awesome to have a beer or bite to eat with. Even if they didn't speak about the inside secrets they had while in office, all of the ones you mention had very interesting personalities.

If I REALLY wanted to have fun, I'd get G.W, Clinton, & Biden together.

I had a similar food-oriented thought process on the George W. Bush thread:

Sometimes, it seems that we're too focused on our differences and not focused enough on our similarities.

I've said for a while that if I could choose 3 people to have drinks with it would be Bill Murray, Anthony Bourdain for his storytelling genius and depth of experiences to draw from, and Barack Obama for his experiences as the first minority President, maintaining a strong family while in the public eye, and because he seems like a good guy for conversation. Politics would be banned as a topic of conversation at the table because it's probably the least interesting topic possible with those guys.

Although Robert Redford would be a damn awesome addition to that table also. He's the consistent badass I secretly aspire to be in my elder years.

This probably isn't a huge revelation on your part; just an acknowledgement of the universal truth that politics is poison. In reality, it's nothing more than a very narrow set of opinions; certainly much smaller than the sum of commonalities that people have.

I'll drink a beer and shoot the shit with just about anyone, so long as the beer's not a budweiser, and the shit we're shooting is interesting.

W has shown that he appears to be a genuinely nice guy. Plus, he could come help me clear some brush.

Obama you need to get into a rec league basketball game. Just slip him in there and see how long it took someone to notice.

Bush 1 has seen an awful lot. It's amazing how much Trump makes you appreciate presidents like him.

I'm not sure about Clinton. He skeeves me out on occasion

Going back another, Carter was just not a good president, but his post president life has been awfully damn cool.

It would be pretty creepy to stare at Reagan, dude's been dead for quite a while and I don't think they preserved him like Lenin.

I'm beginning to think that we are much more fucked than I thought.

I'd have a beer with any of them, and I think I'd enjoy it with all except our current President.

Reagan - Was before I was able to vote, but presided over a time of tremendous change in the world. Didn't/don't agree with some of his politics, but see more nuance in it than I did in my younger, more knee-jerk leftie days.

Bush I - Absolutely. Man had a wide range of experiences that I think would be fascinating to hear about. He's got some of the snooty northeast privilege thing going on sometimes, but I live and work in the snooty northeast, so I'm cool with it/know how to pierce the veil.

Clinton - Of course. Say what you will about the morals of the man (and there's much to be said), I think it would be very fun and illuminating to have some beers with him.

Bush II - Yes. Wouldn't necessarily have said that in the immediate aftermath of his administration, but my view of him has changed over time. He doesn't drink any more though, right? And I don't smoke cigars, which is rumored to be one of his indulgences. Maybe we could get some edibles or something.

Obama - Absolutely. I suspect he's less aloof in person than he came off much of the time in office, and though I'm sure he wouldn't dish, I would love to get his unvarnished view of some of the shortcomings of his administration.

I think i'd be interested in meeting any of those listed. Though i'd put reagan at the bottom, and probably clinton at the top and i'd be really interested in Bush 2 and Obama and possibly even together as i suspect they both have interesting reflections on their respective experiences and they seem to have had great respect for each other.

I'd never have any interest in meeting the current, and not for political reasons but because i am not sure he has a single reflective bone in his body and i am 100% certain that nothing that has ever gone wrong was his fault and frankly that would be boring and tiresome.

I actually think Obama would be boring as hell to have a beer with. Much like Carter I'm not sure they would talk about anything but themselves. Reagan? By far the best President of my lifetime but I'm not sure how much fun it would have been to have a beer with him.

Clinton and GW Bush would both be a blast. The two likely have a thousand political and non-political stories to tell and both seem to be more real than any President since Teddy R. I've spent time in Arkansas with local politicians. They loved Bill, thought he lacked any morals but he was one of them and they trusted him to do what was best in the end. They hated Hillary, not surprising. To a man these guys have stated Bill was the most real guy (flaws and all) you could be around. Just buy him a beer, light up a cigar and he would talk for hours and you would never be bored.

Trump did an interview just after the election and he did offer some insight into his upbringing, his father and what he considers important. I'd be interested just to see if he's different in person versus in public.

I have a suspicion that one could walk away from a beer with Clinton and say Holy Shit, he's more conservative than liberal.

there is a quote from trump - years ago, and I am paraphrasing but he basically says he learnt to play the idiot to get ahead and I have no doubt that what you see and what you get and quite likely two different things, I also do not doubt that he asks for everything in the hope of walking away with half of what he asked for, BUT I am just not sure that he realises what he's up against or has the wit to manage it - certainly there is no indication so far that he does when he rolls out KAC, SS etc

everyone else listed worked to deliver what they wanted and recognised along the way that compromise was necessary - when all you have is a hammer everything you see is a nail - he literally think's he can stop the bleeding though strategy failing to realise that what he's dealing with is a culture that can just wait him out............maybe in a decade I'll feel differently, I'm not sure I'd have wanted to meet bush 2 at the time but upon reflection I do, so who knows - maybe he proves us wrong

Forget about him. It seems like our country's institutions are not prepared to manage this approach -- otherwise we wouldn't have a collective conniption fit every time the man said or tweeted boo.

Let's throw the losers in here as well...

Hillary Clinton
Mitt Romney
John McCain
John Kerry
Al Gore
Bob Dole
Michael Dukakis
Walter Mondale

I think I'd drink with Hillary before the rest of them.

I don't think I could take it. Hillary seems like she'd get a few drinks in her and give you all the gossip you'd ever want.

talk about a boring time

I would like to drink beers with both Bushes and with Bill Clinton, as long as the wives were no where near. Couldn't handle looking at or listening to the voice of Mrs. Clinton, and he would be all over Mrs. Billabong.

Correct. Men shower up here. Then again, men pee standing up here in God's country as well, so I can see how the concept is so foreign to you.

POTUS and candidates in general are all pretty smug people . . . having said that spending time with:
Trump would like going back to the absolute worst of High School
No to Bill or Hillary but them together would be interesting
Yes to W . . . not a good prez but he seems authentic
No to Gore . . . he's top of my list of pompous asses
Sure to Kerry - if I was in the middle of an insomnia bout
Bush 1 . . . maybe in his heydey, but currently he doesn't look interesting
Reagan - no he was an asshole and not very bright.
Carter - absolutely, not much of a prez but a great American
