No Alcohol January 2024
Well, Hello there Everyone!

Greetings from DC!

It’s that time of year, where I come back to the forum to put on my coaching hat for the next month and change. As always, I’m here to offer up my personal anecdotes to help those of you on the fence to participate to opt in, and to also air my grievances up front (hey isn’t there another challenge here that does that…?).

I did the math, and 2024 will mark a decade of Dry Januarys for me. They’ve all looked slightly different over the years, but there’s one way this one will be far different than the others. I’m proud to say that I’ve been able to do it with enthusiasm for so long, and the years definitely got easier as time went by. Some of that was muscle memory, some of that was easy January goings-on and recently a LOT of that had to do with all of YOU who helped keep me accountable. So, thank you!

If you’ve been following along on the forum you know that one of my biggest challenges during this month has been being married to a person who absolutely did not participate in this month. It always caused a lot of stress, seeing things from a cleaned lens from the outside looking in for this period. And no amount of pleading, encouraging, etc could move that needle with either him or his family. Alcohol-fueled and alcohol-involved episodes escalated to the point where I found my threshold. Actually my threshold pressed hard into my ribs, squeezing the air out of me. So, I left.

It’s been an interesting year. I’ve lived mostly by my standards of drinking which I’ve established here over the years- never drinking alone, choosing which days to partake based on rest days, quality over quantity, etc. So, it was an adventure for me. I discovered amazing wines before symphonies, had beer than never tasted so good after the Wednesday Night Hammerfest, and achieved a state of zen-like calm and buzzed-like joy that I hadn’t experienced in a long time without feeling any "need" to drink. Therapy probably also helped tremendously with that last part. But, here I am, ready to blow the whistle at midnight on Monday morning and start this challenge for us again.

This time, I’ve got behind the scenes reinforcements. Shock of shocks, I’ve met someone who also not only does Dry January, but also Dry February, and Dry March. It’ll be interesting having someone be the angel on my shoulder for a change! I don’t plan to make it through March, but I will attempt to go until at least my birthday at the beginning of that month (which will also be a combined “Jubilation Day” party).

So, who’s in?
Let's start the year off on the right foot, in control of one of our controllables and investing in ourselves early on.

One of the main success points that we have every year is the teamwork and camaraderie. We all cheer each other on, either publicly in this thread or privately through our DMs. I'm grateful that it's the one time of year that we can all put our differences aside (Blumie vs Sam Long, Cervelo vs Specialized, etc) and do something good for ourselves.

If you're playing along for the first time, or are just now coming out of your post-holiday fog and need a refresher, here's how this goes:

1. I'll be posting a check-in here every day throughout January. Feel free to read along, nod silently in agreement, or check in yourself for accountability. If you don't feel comfortable checking in publicly, I offer you my personal pompoms and private message inbox every day you need it.

2. Take this extra time to tune into your body. We all love data- keep track of your resting HR and HRV, hours slept, quality of sleep, how many chocolate chips you snarfed because you're missing your after dinner ritual, and how well you're otherwise staying hydrated. There are lots more metrics too, so share with the class what you're experiencing!

3. The goal of this month is to evaluate your relationship with alcohol. Some people will come into this thread to tell us that drinking is wrong and gross and we're awful humans for enjoying a nice single barrel bourbon every so often (come on, this IS the ST forum after all), but many others will share inspiring stories about their sobriety and encourage us to fulfill our promise to ourselves this month and potentially beyond. And, several of us will also discuss our favorite beverage of choice- the one that gets us through this month, and the one we're looking forward to after this period ends. Quality over quantity is a common theme here.

4. If you manage to succeed in staying dry for 31 days, that's 8.5% of your year spent sober. Woohoo! And if you follow my trajectory, it'll be 62 days dry to kick off the year!

Are you ready? Let's goooooo!

In. Again.

Thanks again for doing this and sharing your plight. Sounds like you will be better off and happier. I wish you well.

As for me, I have kept off 18 of the 20 pounds I lost with last year's kick-off! So, I've figured out my diet but I still have work to do on my relationship with alcohol. Looking forward to this year's challenge.

YESSSSS! You won't regret it! My advice to the newcomer-

Lean on us when it gets hard.

Lean IN on yourself to really figure out the why and how of your relationship with alcohol. We have some key words that we'll bust out over the month like "witching hour" and you'll know exactly what we mean.

Make your own journal for the month either here or offline. Pair it with your watch data. It's pretty damn fascinating.

WAY TO GO! I'm excited for you to dive into long course racing!

Last year, in the midst of the hurricane, I had the best tri season of my life. Top 10 AG in nationally acclaimed road races, broke tapes, qualified for IM 70.3 worlds again, and looked freaking stunning in the process because I was in the best shape of my life. I'm so ready to feel that way again after this annual reset.

I'm in.

In fact, I'm looking to stop drinking well beyond January.

I love red wine, but every time I have a glass it just wrecks my sleep and recovery. I find myself awake around 3-4am and my HRV drops about 6pts.

Doc, thanks for hosting again this year, you are an inspiration. 2023 was my first Dry January and it went well. As you suggested, it's a good opportunity to consider one's relationship with alcohol. I am in for 2024!

I'm in too. Got a bit of an early start after Christmas.

Done this the past few years and it's a great way to drop some weight. I also seem to put in my best power numbers in late January/early February after a month booze free. Likely going to extend beyond January as well. Thanks for putting this together!

Those are some big changes! Congrats on taking a huge (and scary I'm sure!) step forward!

I'm in again and planning to go until at least mid-February when we go away for a family vacation. I feel like I got to a point this past year where having a couple drinks at night became the rule rather than the exception, and I don't want that to be the case anymore. I've also put on a few pounds and I'm making a concerted effort to shed the weight and get back to an overall healthier lifestyle in 2024.

It's always nice to know there's a group to commiserate with when things get difficult!

I have fallen in love with some serious French wines over the past year, but good lord they did a number on my sleep. I'm glad that symphony season and triathlon season don't really overlap.

I'm in again. This will be year 3. Or maybe 4? Thanks for your leadership and cheerleading on this. And, like you, this year will be the 1st for me to Dryuary with a partner - my spouse. I convinced her to do it with me, no separation/ new partner required! But best wishes and good vibes to you on your significant life change!

Getting some nice champagne for NYE and then... I'll see how far I get after the 1st month...

Good luck to all.

I stopped drinking beer in 1992 when I was 27 (because I never really liked it...but was peer pressured into drinking in my time in the military because back then a "man had to handle his alcohol"....whatever stupidity that meant). After this I still would have some wine on special occaissions and for biz dinners and then I started to travel a lot for work and saw the destruction it was causing to peoples' careers (when you do lots of long haul travel to Asia and Europe and dine and wine out for biz dinners and have to do four cities in four nights with flights in between and jetlag and keep performing or get axed), I realized that I would not be able to keep up the pace required to perform in my work if alcohol was part of the equation and just telling customers and peers, "I don't drink" took alway all pressures. So not had a drop since 2002 currently 58 and thankful I made that investment in my health and biz performance.

I know its a bit extreme, but it was easy as I never enjoyed more than a glass of orange juice and was larely partaking for peer pressure purposes. I realize that my scenario of not really liking the taste is not a common one, but for those who got in for peer pressure, you can just tell people they need a sober person to drive them around. Best of luck to all. If you want to go on the alcohol free endless Jan, you won't regret it.

For me the switch flipped during a biz dinner in Tokyo. I realized it was a competive advantage if everyone got inebriated (even in a mild way) and I had all my wits around me and I could get the upper hand.

Le ditto, to all of the above.

I'm in! And looking forward to it. I've been looking forward to it for the last six weeks -- my husband has even been buying low-sugar ginger beer and kombucha to help me get ready (bless). This is all complicated, however, by the fact that he's teaching a literal WINE EDUCATION CLASS next semester that's sponsored by a local wine store. Meaning: every Tuesday from mid-January until May there will be at least two -- if not four -- mostly full bottles of wine arriving in my house, awaiting drinking.

But, I'll be fine.

Last year was my first Dry January and I sailed through, thanks in no small part to this community. And, in fact, I cumulatively did about 4 months without drinking in 2023. While it wasn't consecutive, Dry January definitely showed me not only how often I was drinking but how it is detrimentally affecting my training, rest, recovery, and general well-being. With that in mind, I'm hoping to make it well into February this year.

All that said: my birthday is January 2nd and I have family traveling all the way from California to here in Miami to celebrate with me, so I will be joining this challenge on January 3rd. ;)

¡Dale!

Just tell family members they can have alcohol, but you're celebrating your birthday without. It sends a message that alcohol is not neccessary for celebrations. What do you think? Doable? And if it's your birthday, you can tell them they have to join you too!!!

This is my first alcohol-free December. Partly because I started training for a late April 70.3 in the beginning of December. And partly because it just makes me feel like crap the next day and it's hard to train feeling like that. I just can't process alcohol in my 50s like I did in my 40s. I only attended one small gathering for the holidays and it was just my local open water swim friends (who I consider family, no other friends qualify lol). I brought a new decent non-alcoholic beer called Sober Carpenter (similar to Athletic Brewing) and it comes in the big cans so you can even be discrete about it if need be. But our friends are supportive. They are just happy when I leave the house for something other than training. Going to keep the streak going into January and probably at least until my 70.3 in April. After the race, I might have one drink as I normally do after a race. But we'll see......The longer I go w/o alcohol, the less I miss it and self-medicating.

Roughly it was my experience being on long haul travel to get to Asia or Europe and then change cities every day in between, and trying to train at 5 am before the next day of work and drinks at dinner just "GOT IN THE WAY". In any case, the entire process made the decision making easy. Which 70.3 are you doing in April. I have Oceanside70.3

Yes very understandable. And training after air travel is hard enough. Alcohol makes it more challenging.

I'm signed up for the new IM 70.3 in Cap Cana (Punta Cana), Dominican Republic. Looks like a fun race in the Caribbean. And I haven't been there yet. I signed up after I said no more air travel for a while recovering from the long Kona flights. It just looked too good to pass up and didn't want to risk it going away for 2025. I hope to do Oceanside someday. Haven't done it yet. It's not that bad to fly to SD for us. And I did do Indian Wells 70.3 a year ago.

I stopped drinking in early November. I found out I had gout and when I stopped drinking beer realized that just drinking cocktails wasn’t good for me.

Can’t drink NA beer as it has Purines, so that made quitting a little tougher the dry Joes in the past. A fun non-alcoholic drink is Pathfinder, it is very tasty with some lemon and a splash of club soda.

My dad was the teetotaler with 8 brothers who all died of various complications of alcoholism. In med school, I watched my uncle die from hepatic encephalopathy after a portacaval shunt to stem bleeding from esophageal varices. A heavy drinker in college and early in med school, I cut way back after my uncle passed. I became a gastroenterologist and for years treated complications of alcoholism including bleeding from esophageal varices. This year marks the 10th anniversary of my little brother’s death from alcoholism. After he passed, my 5 drinks a year went to zero. It amazed me how many of my friends would offer me alcohol when I explained why I didn’t drink alcohol anymore. My last drink was in February of this year, wine with dinner while vacationing in Patagonia. My wife and I came down with Covid and since then, I haven’t had the desire to have any alcohol. I don’t miss it at all. I have no issues with anyone who drinks and enjoys it. It’s just not for me.

That's one of the most interesting aspects of this annual thread is the stories about how merely not drinking causes such a "scene" at times.

Even on this forum we typically get 1-2 two posters who pop in and are really upset that there's a thread about not drinking for a month.

Last January I attempted to join the No Alcohol January challenge here on ST. After a week we had a friend come up and bring beer after I told him I was not drinking in January. I was weak and had a beer. Peer pressure is hard. Another reason I hardly entertain aside from the fact that I'm off-grid and not easy to get to. But yeah it sucks when people can't just accept what you drink or do not drink. Even with food it's the same thing. People feel upset or threatened if someone doesn't eat meat, or gluten or carbs or whatever the fuck it is.

Death is easy....peaceful. Life is harder.

I am in. Kinda have to. Went for my annual and blood work shows elevated cholesterol, so dietary changes are in effect. This last year was a rough one for me and I could easily drop 15+ pounds. Booze is the low hanging fruit and makes the biggest impact on how I feel.

I'm in again. I've done various dry months over the years including Dry January with you guys one or two times before. I'm looking to do more than just 1 month. Not sure how long I'll go but the Jan/Feb/March sounds like a good idea. After that, maybe just keep going until after my 70.3 in August?

Pink? Maybe. Maybe not. You decide.

Welcome. You've got this! Let's sit in the corner and bitch about how rough this year was once January goes full tilt.

Are you going to go back in for more labs once the month is done?

That's one of the most interesting aspects of this annual thread is the stories about how merely not drinking causes such a "scene" at times.

Even on this forum we typically get 1-2 two posters who pop in and are really upset that there's a thread about not drinking for a month.

In my experience, The Punk Rock Community is incredibly supportive in this way

"You're not drinking? Oh, OK"
"You're vegan? Oh, OK"
"You won't eat beef, but you will eat goat? That's cool"

And so on

I made it part way through the month in 2022 then dropped out, but then went completely alcohol free in October 2022. Didn’t join the thread in 2023, but also didn’t drink. Happy to be here to support those who need it! Life is good without alcohol.

Had my first one a few months ago. Not really bad at all. Worst part is the day where you're drinking like massive amounts of laxatives and Gatorade to clear things out. Actual colonoscopy, meh. Granted the drugs they pushed on me that "wouldn't put me under, just make me care less about what's going on" did indeed knock me right the hell out for most of it.

Was slightly bummed after the whole deal the entire report was just two words - "Normal colon." Was hoping for a bit more verbiage one how awesome my colon is.

Y'all are doing it wrong.

I've had 6 so far (rampant history of colon cancer in my family). You get the stuff that smells like really terrible maraschino cherries that you chug once at night and once in the morning, and you're done "clearing out" after like 2 hours, tops. Then you get the good stuff for your scope that gives you the best nap of the DECADE. And your GI surgeon gets to pat you on the hand and tell you that you're "boring", while the anesthetist has a look of panic on their face that your HR dropped to slightly below your known (to you, not them) resting rate (which for me was down in the 30s the last time, oops haha).

That's one of the most interesting aspects of this annual thread is the stories about how merely not drinking causes such a "scene" at times.

Even on this forum we typically get 1-2 two posters who pop in and are really upset that there's a thread about not drinking for a month.

If I rewind back to my military days in 1992 and I stopped beer it was a MAJOR issue, every time I declined and it could come from peers or even senior officers...."what are you a wimp ???". But by 2002 in biz settings, people immediately backed off. In social settings I would get the, "what are you training for another one of those marathons, you need to gain some weight, have a drink you party pooper". The disparaging remarks were constant. Even when I get together annually with my ex military buddies it was a topic of contention every year. Then we all got over 50, some people started having heart attacks, others lost partners from cancer, 66% of my buddies are carrying more weight than they need to, and I am roughly the same body dimensions as when we were on college but I am 58 not 20. Now no one questions me. Everyone wants to get on my "plan" to get fit. It's come full circle.

My advice to those trying and having to deal with the peer pressure is just tell everyone around you to go to hell. If a bunch of aliens watched humans from out space and were asked, "why do you think this species puts this liquid in their body that makes, them slower, dumber, crash cars, perform worse at work and play, may lead to cancer or diabetes or heart disease, and generally be less physically able" the aliens would say, "Seems like a weird species, why would they do that to themselves ?".

The entire alcohol industry has us all fooled that this is needed for life, and all our friends applying peer pressure are the agents of that industry and they don't even know it.

Finally here in Canada, health canada lowered the guidelines to 2 glasses a week from something like 10. 2 glasses is still 104 glasses over the year or roughly 20,000 calories over a year minimally where you can get better 20,000 calories from other sources that will help fuel and rebuild the body.

Yes! It's all about inertia. Once you realize you're like 10-15% of the way through, it gets WAY easier aside from the occasional appearance of a Lion's Mouth or an episodic trigger. Welcome back, you two!

I don't drink barely anything. This year (2023) I think I may have had 3-4 beers and last night for the toast I drank a less than a glass of wine, but I'm here to wish all of you some good luck.

I use the FB Messenger app to talk to my mother and my siblings, we live in different countries (and continents), but I hardly use the FB app; I think I was using mostly for the TT group there.

It's IG that consumes my time and energy, and this year I want to dedicate more time to reading and just being a better person.

Happy New Year, y'all!

I hope day one is treating you gently. This is a baby step, 1 of 31 and possibly beyond. But it has to start somewhere.

Now is a great time to check in with how you're feeling. For many who rang in the new year, this is your "baseline", or your departure lounge. Log anything and everything that you want to- HR, water consumed, level of crankiness, number of urges to just sneak the last sip of champagne at brunch, etc. Or, just tell us how your day went, as I'll now do.

I had a freaking BLAST this weekend with some amazing company and definitely drank too much red wine (Saturday) and bourbon (Sunday). Today started day one of Q1 and I scratched the "itch" by going to the climbing gym for two hours. I'm looking forward to that being one of my meditations in the coming weeks (plus a fantastic power pull day at the "fun" gym ;) ).

I rang in the new year this morning with a cup of chai, and finished my night with a mug of peppermint tea. I'm very much looking forward to a full night of sleep without 130 pounds of canine intervention, and I'll be sorting through my EX travel plans tomorrow with a clear head.

ALLEZ!

I’m in. I took a look at the scale today and am the heaviest I have ever been at 242lbs. Last week I was drinking 12 drinks per night or more to drown my sorrows and have been doing that for a couple years. My RHR used to be 45. It’s 66 now. I get bloodwork done every year and my liver is suffering. Not that much, but enough to notice.

Part of the reason that I drink is that I have a heavy burden placed on my shoulders as a caregiver for my parents. My dad can’t drive anymore and is 87. I have to get all his meals for him and take him to all his appointments. My mom is in skilled nursing with dementia and wheelchair bound after breaking her hip in April â€23. She can’t talk anymore and doesn’t eat meals too well so my dad and I visit everyday and I give her 700 cal in two Ensure drinks. I miss talking with her so much. It costs $10K per month for her care and we have insurance for 2.5 more years for her before it becomes out of pocket. She is 85.

I’m so close to both of my parents now that I also don’t know what I would do without them. My dad also has had a radical cystectomy (bladder removed due to cancer) and needs new urine bags every 3-4 days. He is doing them himself for now but may need assistance in the future and I just am very uncomfortable being around my naked father or mother. Some days take a great toll on me and all I look forward to is a drink. A little break for me.

But, my dad needs to go to the ER for anything, I’d have to take an Uber to pick him up as I can’t drive when drinking.

I drank so I wouldn’t have to face the music. But, today I have decided to participate in a dry January and possibly a dry year for my family and myself. I also vow to eat cleaner and want to be in shape for my nephew’s graduation mid June.

I’m not an alcoholic even though my habits seem to say that I am. I haven’t had many cravings after making the decision today to abstain. The suit I want to wear for his graduation is my 185lb suit, so I plan to cut 57lbs in 6.5 months.

I set out to ride for 4 hours on Zwift today, but only made it 2. I guess it is an ok start, but I am cognizant that I can add more hours over time and work up to 3-4hr workouts every day as I used to train.

So kudos to you for starting this challenge. I’ve seen it in prior years, but haven’t participated. I greatly enjoy the ST community and maybe I will also do the running challenge later in the year. I have motivation issues currently, but think it is the best for me to step back from alcohol at the moment.

Cheers

I'm in again this year. My 34 yo daughter is doing it with me. My wife is not, but that's fine... She doesn't have dysfunctional relationship with it.... Just not into such challenges.

Sorry things went south for you... But, it sounds like things are all looking up since. So, that's awesome!

July, August and September involved some excess drinking on my side. My mom passed away in July... And we postponed her service until October. So, its been a bit of a roller coaster...and, I think I used it as an excuse to consume regularly.

Anyway, after I realized I was pretty much drinking every night, and the service was over... I went back to my more typical routine of "only before off days and special occasions".

My goal for 2023 is no more than 65 days of drinking. I'll probably plan on making it to valentine's day, which is what I did last year. I'm training for a 50k race series, so not much room for alcohol anyway.

1/1 so far.

I understand. My mother had severe dimentia as a complication from neuroencepholopathy. She also had a stroke in Jan 2020. I have not had to be a full time caregiver, but we regularly took care of mom for a week about 4 times a year so that dad could get away or have a medical procedure or whatever.

Its certainly a very hard job, even for a week. We always marveled at what my dad did for mom every day for the last 5 years. What was really rough were the few moments when she would be lucid enough to be aware of her situation.

Hang in there Zachary. I admire you for being able to recognize your pattern, and change it....and for doing the right thing for your parents.

Welcome! I am really proud of you for stepping back to see the bigger picture for yourself and for your family.

Years ago, when I was thrust into the caregiver role for the umpteenth time, I had a small meltdown in the stepdown unit of the hospital after too many sleepless nights, minor stepback episodes of the patient, and terrible things that his parents said to me after I had spent almost every waking moment by his side for days. The charge nurse took me into his office and educated me on the oxygen mask theory. You know, the one you the flight attendants dither on about on the plane before takeoff, where you need to put your own mask on before helping others?

That's what this month is for you. Taking back control and helping yourself so you are MORE capable of helping others with your strong heart, just a clearer head and a happier liver.

I'm here for you if you want to talk offline about any of this. But I'll say, with this realization and your putting this to words in pixel form, I think you've got this.

The app I use is called Drink Control: Alcohol Tracker. Drink less or quit drinking. It bills itself as an alcohol consumption diary, you input what drinks you have if you are drinking that day or you mark it as sober. It has a drink menu with alcohol content that you choose from. It gets a bit harder with cocktails as you kind of have to guess how much alcohol is in the cocktail. There are others, I’m not entirely sure why I picked this one. At the end of the day it’s only as good as how honest you are with how much you have consumed. Good luck!!!

This is year 6 for me of Dry January. Like others have said, it gets easier and easier every year. It is really to the point where I don't even have to think about it anymore.

My decision in 2019 to do this was a great one. Not because I drank all that much, but because it just made me realize how easy it was to not drink. Throughout the rest of the year, my drinking greatly reduced to only be times when I decided that I really wanted to have one. And even that feeling became less and less. Now, I'm happy having a few beers at the pool or beach during the summer, but its not a day long binge. The Athletic Brewing beers are a constant in my cooler when I know there will be drinking.

Good luck to everyone. You can do it and will be happy that you did.

Go shake your fist at some clouds! I actually prefer paper calendars, but with traveling and not always being at home an app is pretty useful. It’s easier to select drink, how many ounces and alcohol content (if I’m out at a bar or restaurant and I’m not sure of the alcohol content I tend to err on a slightly higher side. I’m finding a lot of wines nowadays are around 14.5 to 15.5, for reds which I mostly drink)

Oh boy. I'm doing my first one in 2 weeks and while not sure about no booze all of January (did it two years ago and enjoyed it) I was gonna hold the line until after that as a mini goal. My personal life also imploded in the most comedic and heartbreaking way over the holidays so I'm a little wary of medicating myself through the fallout of that with alcohol and it reinforces the need for a break.

Whatever your reasons, best of luck to you all in getting what you need out of this!

I'm getting pretty tired of bailing my morning workouts after a night of drinking which has been happening at least once every couple of weeks lately. Hopefully this will break that trend. I didn't start drinking until my late 40's, so my relationship with alcohol has kinda been flip-flopped to what most people are accustomed to. Aside from my wife's birthday this month, I don't think there will be any other caveats so I'm hoping it's smooth sailing. We are actually having a "speakeasy" built into part of our house (to keep the alcohol stash out of the kitchen). It'll be a several-month process so I'm toying with the idea of staying dry until it's finished.

I use one called Try Dry created by the charity Alcohol Change UK. It works on my Android and does a happy little animated confetti thing when you mark yourself as having stayed "dry" for the day. It's not as sophisticated as other apps, but it does check in on things like mood and cravings, as well as streaks, days sober in a month, reminders, etc. I like it and have been using it all year.

Although, as someone mentioned downthread, I also love me an old school analog calendar marked up with gold stars. YMMV.

For me my addiction is social media, and last night I uninstalled the IG app on my phone, and the goal for the year is to not come back to it.

Yeah, last year I uninstalled the Facebook app. I'd have liked to have just nuked my account entirely, but I just can't since I have family and friends who post meaningful stuff at times. So I'll check in once a week on the desktop version.

I use the FB Messenger app to talk to my mother and my siblings, we live in different countries (and continents), but I hardly use the FB app; I think I was using mostly for the TT group there.

It's IG that consumes my time and energy, and this year I want to dedicate more time to reading and just being a better person.

So I'll join you guys in this effort.

Last year I chained my Dry January to also swearing off Insta and other social/news websites -- basically, anything that kept me on my phone and scrolling. Interestingly, I made it longer at "no Instagram" than I did "no alcohol" -- I think I got to mid-May before I caved and reopened the app. And now I have to do it again because it's just too easy to open IG and fall down a rabbit hole of bikes I'll never be able to afford or races I won't do or beautiful places I'll never live. So, I'm back to square one with Insta and will join you all in steering clear of social media for the foreseeable future!

Also, everyone is different but I have to say: I quit Facebook is a blaze of glory 2.5 years ago and it was like an instant reset for my mental health. Like, what people say about sobriety is how I felt finally giving FB the boot. And yes, I know I am a complete hypocrite because I still have Instagram...but my IG follows are all mostly strangers (artists, athletes, photographers, etc.) while -- for better or worse -- my FB was people I actually knew (family, friends) and the platform was making me actively dislike. All that said, IG is now starting to give me the same heebeegeebees that FB did just before I left, so I appreciate the group effort here to curtail both booze and social media.

Last year I tried One Year No Beer that helps you giving advice, and celebrate sorbriety on a daily basis with little notifications and reminders to drink water, eat health and be proud.

It didn´t really work for me, as I felt it was more focused on a bit more hardcore drinkers. But its a well made and working app. I think you get the first 5 trial days for free.

Also read the book Mindful Drinking, which gives good advice on how to maintain a healthy relationship on a daily basis with alcohol.
Took away a handful of good pointers from that:

Then you get the good stuff for your scope that gives you the best nap of the DECADE. And your GI surgeon gets to pat you on the hand and tell you that you're "boring", while the anesthetist has a look of panic on their face that your HR dropped to slightly below your known (to you, not them) resting rate (which for me was down in the 30s the last time, oops haha).

ha just had my second colonoscopy, can't believe I'm so old I've had two of them..
first one they gave me fentanyl, it was glorious, best nap ever as you say, and felt great for a whole day afterward. I was looking forward to my second colonoscopy to get another dose - but got something else this time, good nap but not nearly as much fun as fentanyl.. the anesthesiologist came to talk to me beforehand so I was able to warn him about the HR.. he thanked me for working out and staying healthy, said it makes his job so much easier.

these days I may open a bottle of wine on Friday night, a glass then and another on Saturday. That's it until the next weekend, an open bottle lasts for weeks..
I find it easier to stick to a dry work week year round, than a dry month followed by drinking the rest of the year. I need the daily discipline.

Day 3 chip here. :)

Not too hard yet, biggest challenge will likely be next week on work trip with a few customer dinners planned, but have a strategy for that, as I've done Dry January in past years and when I tell my team I'm doing that again, they have all been supportive and encouraging ( vs. trying to twist my arm into having a drink ).

Day three done and dusted, we’re almost 10% of the way through the month!

Interesting talking with the Q1 coach tonight about some of the catch words we’ve used here over the seasons. I introduced him to the “witching hour” aka the time you typically reach for a drink, which for most of us is between the closing of the work computer and sitting down to dinner. We’re working on finding other mechanisms of distraction. For now I’m sticking to my peppermint tea after dinner and I’m enjoying it.

I also put myself in the hurt locker today with day one of TdZ, triple loops of London after six weeks out of the saddle thoroughly decimated me. I can’t even imagine how much more garbagio I’d feel if I’d had something to drink last night.

Keep up the good work, everyone!

This is my second year to do Dry January. Last year I went up to Valentine’s Day, and that will be my goal again.

My background was being married to a highly functioning alcoholic. She was highly functioning until the daily drinking began. I became a caretaker. During that time, I probably went ten years without a single drink. When we divorced, I found that I could socially drink without being in my old caretaker role. Dry January gives me the opportunity to reflect on that while giving my body time to recoup from all the holiday parties and increased amount of drinking.

I’m hopeful that we all meet our goals and that we take the time to reflect on what positive changes can be made during this time.

Day 3 complete. Good luck to all!

3 up, 3 down... As they say.

Hockey game was fun. We won 5 to 2. I enjoy AAA hockey in person way better than NHL games. The fans are a riot, audience participation is non-stop, the game play isn't much different (tho they don't have the same superstar caliber players obviously), there isn't a bad seat in the house, and the prices are 1/3rd of of mediocre NHL seat.

Plus, it's 15 minutes from my home, and there are 20 restaurants that share the same parking lot as the arena. It was literally 5 minutes from the time we left dinner to sitting in our seats at the rink.

No triggers or desire to have a beer / wine.

I did a 10 mile hilly run before we left for dinner and 2.5 on the TM after we got home. I should be toast tomorrow.

In the first few years after divorce, I kept in contact with her. During that time, she married an abusive man who also had a drinking problem, lost a very good and high paying job, and received another DUI. Last summer, her family contacted me inquiring as to my knowledge of the abusive husband - apparently she was filing charges against him. I haven’t talked to her since last summer. I continue to hold out hope and prayers for her full recovery.

Many know this, many do not, but some alcoholics can function at a super high level while masking their addiction and issues to the outside public. She was able to do this, until she wasn’t. It was a fast downward spiral after “she wasn’t”. Over the years, I tried to get her help, but she refused. I tried to bargain, fight it, ignore it, etc. Nothing worked. DUIs, blackouts, pass outs, falls, public outbursts, infidelity, physical and mental abuse, etc., I experienced it all.

As I write this, I’m feeling this effort is more about my history than anything.

Colonoscopy prep is for the birds. But i definitely feel like it hit a reset button. I haven't really felt an urge to drink. There's a mixed six pack sitting in the bottom of the pantry that my visible/ tangible goal is to keep full until at least the end of the month.

Sleep has definitely been more solid lately. Resting HR is down and so is my HRV. We got this no problem.

Improved workouts and immediate weight loss are great motivators as our first weekend approaches.

I've got a quiet one on tap so I don't see any obstacles in the short term.

I hope everyone else is seeing early results and staying positive.

Congrats on Day 3 to all!

For me this was always post 2nd workout. The two a day life, even if it was just a yoga session or stretching, has always been a subtle way of pushing off bad behaviour to later in the day. No glass of wine at customer lunch cause haven't finished "working out" for the day. But it also meant it became an automatic post workout shower beer or too much wine with/after dinner. Just like getting in the car still makes me want to smoke (quote 20 years ago) those activities are now linked in my mind.

Day four is over! If you’re playing along for the month, you’re over 10% done! Woo!
By now you’re probably feeling if not noting some physiological changes. I’m currently in the “Niagara Falls” phase of shedding water weight, which is great until about 4am.

Off to EX tomorrow. If anyone else will be there let me know, I’d love to say hi!

Had dinner with the Q1 coach tonight and both of us kind of pouted about not having a nice bottle of wine to drink. Our water in our souvenir race glasses almost made up for it ;)

Onward!

On day 5 now and all is well and easy!

Had left-overs from New Years Evening for dinner, a super nice Bouef Bourguinon, which initially held a whole bottle of Rioja 🙄
I hope we can accept that the alcohol must have evaporated after 4h in the Kamado and 4 days in the freezer 🥹

Anyone tried Corona Cero AF beer? - that is lush. Just saying

IN, Dr. Cupcake. 4 yr no alcohol anniversary with you and this forums support noting as I aged, one glass had negative affects on overall health, training. Zero alcohol choices are better quality and widely available so the ritual of sipping/hoisting a glass exists. Making change is good, wishing everyone well.

I tried an experiment last night. I took my 3 grandchildren to a movie, Migration ansd ordered three soft drink, a big bucket of pop corn and a tasty IPA on draft and placed it on the table in front of me. It sat there the whole movie and I was never tempted to drink it even for a second. I love IPA’s and yet didn’t even want it.

In in. 6 yrs sober so not too hard to tack on another month. đź‰

For all those who may be reading this, keep up the good work. If you were like me and for years knew you had a problem but just couldn't quite get over the hump, you can do it. I was a high function off an on alcoholic for 15yrs. Hid it from everyone and spent a lot of nights looking at the ceiling wondering what was wrong with me.

Took a big decision, some support from my wife and loved ones, and time, but the other side has been very good for me. Miss the social setting shenanigans sometimes but NOTHING else.

Feel free to PM me if you want to chat.

No problem for those who like to have a few from my perspective! It's just one of those things that I can't make work for me.

Day five done! We’re almost 20% of the way through the month, which is pretty crazy.

At EX, and I went to dinner with a bunch of coaches. It’s interesting who is playing along and who is not. I was glad to have a lot of good sleep last night, as I’m writing this with my eyes half shut now.

OH my crazy vivid dreams have started. Remind me to tell you how I invented northern blot tests for the Nazis.

I'm not gonna lie, fam: I REALLY wanted a drink last night. I had -- as the great lyricist Fred Durst so eloquently put it -- "just one of those days." Literally everything went sideways, starting promptly at 7 am: work got derailed, car wouldn't start (it needs, ironically, a new starter), random doggie showed up in the neighborhood that I spent the entire day babysitting before getting her back to her family at 5 pm (much to my own dogs' relief), couldn't swim because of aforementioned random dog in my yard/car/ongoing shoulder pain, so who was I kidding, anyway, thinking I was going to go swim, but it still counts. And, to top it all off, my husband's best friend joined us for dinner, as he does most Fridays, and I got to watch them share what I am told was a lovely bottle of Cab. Having both had miserable days of their own, they were properly enjoying the wine and the food and were apologetic about drinking wine while I was having kombucha. Oh well.

I guess my point is that I made it, at least in part because I couldn't bear having to read this thread on Saturday morning knowing I broke and had a glass of wine just because I had a bad day. So I didn't. 🙂 As Dr Cupcake says, Onward!

Uneventful first Friday for me as I had bloodwork scheduled for first thing this morning . My annual physical follows on 1/16 providing more motivation to stay the course. I’m only a few pounds from my IM 2008 weight and I’m determined to get there.

I have not posted updates yet because Dryuary has been so - uneventful? No temptation so far, but this is the first weekend... As always, Garmin knows when I am not drinking. Sleep score goes up and HRV goes WAY up. What does that mean? No idea, really, but the correlation is super obvious.

Maybe try an NA product to alleviate some of the urge to grab a drink? There's a lot of good NA beers and even wines. I've been involved with peak NA cocktails for a few years so I'm partial to them, but there's a lot of other good products out there. I have a discount code for peak if you go that direction, "trashlete20"

Thanks for the suggestion! I've never been a big cocktail person, but I do hear nice things about the NA options. I also love an NA IPA, but it didn't seem like it would "go" with the chicken parm. ;) Fortunately, I love kombucha and just having my own little treat with dinner seemed to scratch that itch just fine!

@ Bastet way to stay strong in the face of temptation!

6 Days in, and going strong here. Seeing significant difference in sleep quality according to Garmin, yay!

We are going out tonight for dinner, which we typically don't do during dry Jan, but one of our favorite local restaurants is on-board with the dry theme, and has put together whole selection of alcohol free drinks, so we are excited to able to go out without just having a choice of water or soda to accompany a nice meal.

Day 5: done.
Day 6: most of the way there.

17 mile run today. If I had a drink tonight I'd fall asleep before I got to the bottom.

Biggest changes I've seen are in resting heart rate and overnight HRV:

RHR average was 65 bpm, with a couple nights at 67. RHR average after 1 Jan = 58 bpm

Similar story with HRV: the lowest 7 day average was 22 ms, and a HIGH overnight reading of 29 ms. Since Jan 1, 7 day average is now 30 ms, with a highest overnight reading of 38 ms.

My eating patterns are coming back to normal. Previously, I’d fast all day, break the fast with a few drinks and then eat crap food when hammered.

I had a good lunch and dinner with my Dad today and am feeling pretty good. I never thought I would cut out drinking until 1/1/24 and this thread and the people in it have been a big help. I think this is the way towards being the best version of myself.

Cheers! The water and lemon is tasting goooooddddd!

I’m really proud of ALL of you! And way to come in today showing your work on your test, y’all!

Day six is done! Almost 20% of the way through for the January crew.

First full day of EX here. I am buzzing with energy and had an amazing day with everyone from Tadej Pogacar’s coach to Taylor Knibb to my cohort to my coaching mentor from years ago. Dinner tonight with a slice of this group was special and fun, and I almost wished I had a glass of wine with them. But, one of my friends reminded me that I’m baller for dry January so that was good enough to compensate tonight.

Apparently at some subconscious level it is not OK. :)

I'm doing well. I started a day late, so will carry into February. On the first, I sat down to watch some football with my father-in-law - who I hadn't told about January - and he poured and handed me a beer, a ritual of hospitality I think he really enjoys. Would have been rude to reject it. That one was on me. Otherwise smooth sailing.

@RandMart helpfully provided a link. I 'discovered' these a couple of years ago and was surprised by the quality. I always have some on hand - the Hazy IPA and the Extra Dark are particularly good. Athletic Brewing has been at Multisport Nationals the last 2-3 years and when it is hot out (always in Irving TX) or you've just finished your race - a cold Athletic just hits the spot for me.

Did this for the first time last year, and honestly struggled a bit since weekend drinks were such a part of the norm. First weekend through this year, reached for lots of club soda and even an NA beer to do something different than water. So much is wrapped up in rituals around drinking.

I seem to be supplementing my caloric intake with loads of baked goods - mindset of "no beer, I'm playing with house calories!" At some point I'll want to see a little weight loss so I should cap my cookie pie, pound cake, ice cream, etc. intake!

Losing weight (down 3lbs) and feeling great are providing motivation as we head towards double digit days.

It's been relatively straightforward for me thus far, but it's still early days. I'm amazed at how many zero proof options I have access to now. There's plenty of stuff online for anyone to grab and there's now a variety of stores in my area stocking zero proof drinks. Sometimes after dinner I want to sip on something and my go to so far this year has been either Lyre's Italian Orange or Roots Divino Bianco with some sparkling water and a slice of lemon or orange. It's not the same as having a nice spirit after dinner (shoutout St. George Bruto Americano) but it does the trick for me.

Coming from somebody that doesn't drink at all: what is the lure of drinking alcohol?

Do you like the taste? How you feel? Is is social?

Personally I can't stand the alcohol taste even in champagne and I know that's mild.

The rest of us have tastebuds that appreciate alcohol, and our minds are triggered by various environmental inputs to want to consume it. |

And champagne isn't mild, it's typically 12-14%.

I'll bite, even though it wasn't to me. I have over a decade of sobriety and that was something I needed. I cherish my sobriety. My consumption was problematic leaving university and I never even liked the taste of alcohol. It didn't make me social, it made me isolated. It didn't make me even feel good; it made me not feel, which was what I was going for at the time. It became frightening to realize I was regularly consuming something that had no positive benefit to me. Once I realized those things, stopping became my priority so I could address the things I was trying to escape.

RHR went down, I got far fitter than even. Sleep got better. My emotions became more stable. My life got so much better. I know most people in this thread likely aren't here for the same reasons I am, but there isn't a good thing I could say about alcohol if I tried (for me). I occasionally get a reminder of what the taste might be like when I use hand sanitizer. It makes me want to vomit to think about.

Yes.

It must be for most people and not for me. I have a lot of friends that drink, I don't think it's evil or anything.

I used to go out with them regularly, be the designated driver and enjoyed it. Everyone had fun, normally I got the girls.

When I was in the Marines, I used to be the designated marcher for the section, everyone got back to base safe. That was so much fun, crazy times overseas.

DOUBLE DIGITS IS A BIG DEAL! Wooo!!!

We are more than 30% of the way through January. This is where some of us have mentioned “settling in”, just like we do in the first third of the run in a long course race.

Today just about damn near killed me though.
- tough convo with Q1 coach that kind of wrung out my emotions
- my angel baby kelpie dog got loose during my morning meetings and my life flashed before my eyes. She took herself on a walk and made it back to the front door while the search party was out.
- 2 long slogging drives through rush hour traffic
- miserably hangry by the time I could settle in for the night.

I stayed strong. But man there was not enough bourbon to compensate for this day. That’s kind of how you know you’re a tough one for making it through.

Yes, Bowie enjoyed his wine; I'm not certain about Byrne's position, but he WAS born in Scotland

Still, I think it's a beautiful cover --- from what I know, the singers were just told "come here & sing, if you want to; we'll give you the music when you get here"

I'm pretty much a "make it up as I go along" kinda guy - one could say (and some have) that my life is just one "very long" improv comedy skit

I'm cool with that

My first test. Just got bad (but not totally unexpected) news at work...compensation is down. That sucks and I'd really like to kick a few back to ease the pain. But I won't.

This is where I need to look at my relationship with alcohol. I know drinking will only make me feel better temporarily and giving in will just make me feel even worse. So, I soldier on.

I have a quiet social weekend on tap and that helps going forward. My next challenge is MLK Day - Matinee Knick game at MSG! Not drinking during the game isn't an issue but my wife and are going out for dinner afterwards and I'll miss the glass of wine or two then.

We'll all get tested at some point It's just my turn. I got this. And so do you all!

The good thing is no buzz so no stupid purchases while surfing the internet. Out with the wife on a date night tonight and will have another NA with dinner and possibly a movie. @Dr. Cupcake You have had a rough ride the last couple of days it seems. Congrats on navigating the obstacles and troubles! You got though these things, you can get through anything! My own (worst) doggo escape. We had just sat down for dinner during a trip to Italy. A text! A neighbor says - 'hey your dogs were running around the neighborhood, so I caught them and put them back in your house. The garage door was wide open, so I closed it and went out the front door - which is now closed but unlocked.' Sooo...who was watching the dogs? Oldest son and girlfriend. I could see them - from Italy - on the camera recording from the garage. They go out of the garage, get into a car on the driveway and take off, never closing the garage. A few minutes later, doggo #1 creeps into the garage, looks around, and takes off. Doggo #2 follows. Son swore that he closed the garage...embarassing to see the recording. It all ended well except it pretty much ruined a terrific dinner!

Day 13! Lucky us, we’re almost halfway through the month!

Had a big test today- went out to dinner with my wine ponce friend, and I gritted my teeth when he ordered a fantastic Greek red to go with an already-stressful dinner.

Today was a day where the hard work shone through. I had my first double digit run of 2024 and it felt AMAZING. Gosh I love that for me and for us during this period. I then went into BGSD mode and de-holidayed the place and rearranged the furniture. All by my lonesome.

I just wanted to tell Dr C -- and everyone else here -- that you're doing great!

I'm so grateful for this community, but also for how normalized Dry January has become. My mom rarely drinks* and my whole life I've watched people try to talk her into drinking; complete strangers would become exasperated at the site of this small, quiet woman declining alcohol. It's just something that's Not Done (or rarely done, and generally only in cases of religion or addiction...or both) in society. That is, until recently. And I think a big part of it is movements like Dry Jan, Sober Oct, and choose your rhyme-y phrase, where people come together and support one another in pushing back and trying something new.

In other words, cheers and well done to being halfway there!

*Hilariously, now in her mid-70s, my mom does drink a bit. A few afternoons a week at around 4 pm (but not before!) she has a "champagne cocktail" that is basically 90% sugar free cranberry juice with a champagne floater "on the rocks." She made one for me when she was here for the holidays and, honestly, I think I like not drinking better. đź…

If the social at the event I was at had then u would have gone that route. I pretty much knew that Friday was going to be a cheat day due to the social. Slept like crap Friday night and felt terrible on the treadmill Saturday morning. Definitely strengthened my resolve to finish the month dry and drastically cut back after. Tried two NA beers today. Gruvii Juicy "ipa" and Athletic Special Dark. The Gruvii was okay. A little watery. The Athletic was actually pretty decent. Tasted like an okay porter. That will help a lot. Previously I had only had the NA lagers that tasted like ass.

I did a bit of "lions mouth" Saturday night. My sisters husband is in a band with the owner of a local brewpub. They have 28 mostly local brews on tap. I usually get a couple flights of the more unusual beers (sours, saisons, etc).

They don't have and NA adult beverages... So, I went with a couple sodas. No big deal, once I ordered the first instead of a flight. My BIL also doesn't drink, so it's totally normal in our circle, anyway.

14 days done.

Stats:

I'm down 4 lbs (14bs to reach my goal)
My 7d avg hrv is 37 (22 on 1-jan)
My 7d rhr has dropped from 65 to 58 (my rested low is 52)
My 7d avg sleep score is 64 (49 on 1-jan)
No significant change in sleep duration.

My first time doing dry January.

Dads an alcoholic and I've been starting to worry about my own drinking so I thought I would give it a try.

First week was hell. Struggled to sleep and that 90 minutes after I finished work I was climbing the walls. Nearly gave in a couple of times.

Second week so much better. All of a sudden I have the energy to train again. Cravings have mostly subsided Couple of years ago I was sharp end of my AG in 70.3 - now I'm 20lbs heavier and 100w down on my ftp. My excuse for not training was I was too tired after work - every time I tried to sting together a block I'd burn out with fatigue. How much of that fatigue was due to the booze? Also my idea of a recovery drink after 100 miles was a pint - not ideal.

First big test was yesterday - friends birthday meal at a favourite pub. The IPAs looked sweet but managed to stay strong.

I guess this process has made me realise I have a problem with alcohol. I did not want to admit it but here we are and I have told nobody close to me so I thought I would share with random internet strangers. Good luck on your journeys everyone. I think I'll be joining the dry February group as well.

I plan to carry it on through 14 Feb, when I will have champagne with my wife of 33 years.

But, my 2024 goal is 300 days without alcohol. Nothing special about the 300, except that its a round number. That leaves 66 days to have a drink. I don't drink when I'm training the next day, which is 6 out of 7 days. So, I probably won't get anywhere close to 66.

OHHHHHHH WERE HALFWAY THERE

Sixteen days, y’all! Over 50% of the way through the month! Way to go!!! By now those changes you felt in the beginning are sticking, and the negative stuff is far in the rear view.

I had a challenging day of jury duty (really ugly trial thankfully I didn’t get picked), issues with my Rx stuff (wheee HRT nonsense never ends) and stressing about the end of this week. I need to learn to let go more.

Think this is my 5th year. Was honestly kind of looking forward to the reset. Things weren’t out of hand but it was a bit too habitual and frequent.

Seems like less input this year, so thought I would chime in. Long time lurker, first time poster on this subject.

Found a good mocktail: grapefruit juice, ginger beer, and some sparkling water. Recipe called for ginger beer floater and more sparkling water, but I switched it for a little more kick.

Fresh squeezed is better, but the simply grapefruit stuff isn’t bad.

Also doing sleepy time tea instead of a nightcap.

24 pounds of 14 week old Catahoula puppy and working in healthcare has made for a stressful month, but it’s been fairly easy so far this year (ducks, knocks on wood, crosses fingers).

Birthday is early Feb, planning to make it til then, but toying with the idea of going further. We shall see.

Thanks Dr. C for taking the time and energy amid your stuff. You’re a stud and you got this. Keep it up.

Hang in there everyone. Glad to be part of the tribe and appreciate the encouragement! We got this!

Welcome friend. The not out of hand but too habitual and frequent really resonates with me. Challenging night for me this evening (UK time) as out for dinner with a few heavier drinking friends of mine so gearing myself up to push back if required. I'm still feeling massively better and really enjoying my training so luckily feeling positive going into it.

Stay strong everyone - we got this

Day 17, everyone! Almost 60% of the way done. For those of you coasting, good on you! For those of you hanging on by your cuticles, we got you!

This week has been a relentless exercise in managing frustration. I may or may not have burst into tears in the car today after another stupid thing happened to me, causing a massive overhaul in expectations. Why can't people communicate anymore? Why do people not own their own shit anymore? Wonders never cease.

Anyhoo, even during these past few days where I'd normally throw out a Cupcake-ism like "there isn't enough bourbon to deal with this", I've had zero desire to have any bourbon. Which, if you're on the Eastern Seaboard, it's definitely bourbon weather right now.

The rest of this week gets easier, because Q1 coach will be in coach mode, and we'll be commiserating together.

Little more than halfway there. Good job everyone! I've been fortunate enough to have to have been coasting through the first half.

That is going to be tested this weekend. I've got a misery trifecta on tap; flying, family, Florida. Two I despise, the third I was born into.

My 7 siblings and I don't all get along on a good day. We're celebrating my sister's 70th so it should be a good day. Hopefully everyone is on their best behavior but booze, a checkered family history and the current political environment is a volcano waiting to erupt. It'll be quite a feat to get through this sober and with family relationships in tact.

Continuing strong here. Thanks for everyone in this thread for their contributions, and especially Dr_Cupcake for kicking it off!

This past few days was actually when I was tempted the most, as the midwest has had frigid temps, and sitting by the fire with a glass of wine sounded very appealing. Had some hot tea instead, and kept the streak going. The work events and such which I thought would be the most pressure, actually were not, as it turned out a few others that I work with were also doing Dry Jan. And I'm liking that there's been recognition from some of our local restaurants to have alcohol free drink options that are not just soda or water.

Feeling a lot better, sleeping better, and while I subjectively knew the benefits going in, like a good triathlete I'm a data geek, and I have objective evidence in the form of increased overnight HRV, sleep scores, etc. I was in denial about how much of an impact alcohol ( even if it's just splitting a bottle of wine on a couple nights ) has on me.

Coupled with a better focus on my diet ( tracking calories, not just free range grazing ), I'm also down 5 lbs since the 1st of the year, which feels pretty good too.

Still a long way to go. Other than cheat weekend I haven't touched booze. The NA beers have been decent. Lots of water. Increased fiber in my diet and exercising every morning. Even if I only manage part of a workout, I am getting something in. Sleep quality is up, too. Resting HR is down 6 bom in the same time frame, and HRV is up 10ms, from 36 to 46, too.

I'm attempting to lose 25 pounds (which gets me down to my tri fighting weight) so I'm going no alcohol until then. I've had a couple of Athletic Brewing Co. NAs this month but that's it. Does the nano trace amount of alcohol in NA count or not?

The second I'm back to 175 the beer begins to flow again. :-)

For clarification, the 25 pound weight gain wasn't beer related. It was not working out as much due to recovering from a couple of surgeries, getting COVID 3x, and general laziness. I'm keeping a leash on all calories and not just alcohol related calories.

Replying to last. I concur NA beers endorsed.

Been doing well. Bar trivia went fine. Team is winning, by a lot this season. Only 1 out of 6 is a heavy drinker, as I am. 4-5 beers in a couple hours. 1 went dry last year. Good company.

Work travel upcoming this week. Fortunately only 1 organized mandatory fun social event out. Have my own rental car arranged - thus already setup for DD for folks.

Watching football is not nearly as entertaining when sober.

I'm cutting too - from 242lbs to 185lbs by June 15. I started at 242 on Jan 1 and am 233.6lbs today. Most of the excess weight is from White Claws, so cutting out drinking will be a surefire way to help the cut.

Looks like I contracted covid on Tuesday. I was a total wreck after my tm hilly run. Just a cold shivering mess, with a spitting headache. It hit me like a ton of bricks. I felt fine before the run.

Anyway... Still no drinking. But, also no more running.

That said, I had covid last Xmas, and this is way more mild. Two tylenol totally controls it... As long as I don't forget to take the next dose.

You'd think that with 100 beers on tap, they would've embraced the NA trend and offered a least a couple?sam Adams Just The Haze or Heineken 0.0, at least?

The last place I went to didn't have 100 selections - a few dozen, though - and they had a NA section in their menu (the menu itself was not posted on the board or on a card anywhere, but accessed by QR code on your phone ---- how 21st Century!!!)

As I handed a friend a glass of one my favorite red wines last night, I thought the very same thing.

It's the first week of our semester, and between getting students and advisees squared away, having to scramble to cover stupid admin tasks that are not actually my job, getting a car towed midweek, electrical work leaving us without power in two rooms for multiple days, and an ongoing shoulder issue that's kept me from riding and swimming, I really, really wanted to keep that glass for myself. But I didn't.

Whether this was praiseworthy or masochistic I'm still not sure. But I'm gonna try riding on the trainer rn and putting it all in the rearview metaphorically speaking. Let's roll.

Thanks for the suggestion, but just not to my taste or liking. I’m either going to breakdown or just stick to water. Pretending I’m drinking feels like I’m trying to fool someone or myself. I’ll take either head on or I’ll fail.

You are certainly free to do whatever seems best to you.
However, many here have found, and it’s been posted about in previous editions, that psychology plays a strong role.
Much as a smoker trying to quit might chew gum, “tricking “ your brain can be easier than straight up fighting it.
And that is just speaking of internal struggles, not external, where having a glass/bottle/can in your hand can avoid external pressures.
I am drinking my mocktails because they keep the gremlins inside my head happy. I am still avoiding alcohol and cutting calories, which fits my goals.
Some may view that as a weakness, and to each their own, but I view it like the smoker reaching for the bubblicious or the dieter reaching for a carrot stick.
I don’t particularly care for most NA beers, and have done far fewer this year, and completely gave up on NA wine, but going out to the garage fridge and popping a top with the Park Tool BO-2 magneted to the side of the fridge still lights up the reward center in my brain, and scratches that itch.
Again, not trying to talk you into or out of anything, but an all-or-nothing approach is not what works best for me, and at the risk of speaking for others here, others as well based on what I have seen and read the last 5 years.
Or, as someone once said, don’t let perfect be the enemy of the good.

I have had slips/moments of weakness in previous years and always regretted them, but can’t say I regretted any skunky NA beers. Personally I will take bitter beer face and a wasted couple bucks in the moment over how I felt the next day (regret/disappointment, not hangover).

Whatever you decide we are all pulling for you and cheering for you. Hang in there!

Best Tips to Get Through

What if we all share a couple tips that help us get through a tough day? I am sure there will be overlap but chime in if you’ve got a suggestion or just throw out a ditto on your favorite.

Be the Designated Driver (or at least claim to be).

Claim religious reasons (living 18 miles from the Utah border makes this easy for me)!

Enlist the bartender’s help - order a mock or a NA and let them know to repeat it.

Replace the habit with something else physical.

Replace the habit with something else mental or spiritual.

Take one fight at a time and give the gremlins in your brain something to keep them happy and light up those reward centers. Find a stand-in/mock/replacement/NA that still fits your goals, ie no sodas or energy drinks, but is still close to “normal.”

What is your go-to to get through?

I almost said something about being monastic, but monks make, and drink, beer! 🤪

Had dinner with an old friend last night. Shared that I was doing dry january when xc skiing. Usually we would grab 2-3 pints at local pub.
Happy that athletic brewing is widely distributed. And had a decent kombucha.

My brother quit drinking a few years back after starting a family. Did not want to deal with hangover.
Dad gave up drinking when we were young. Got back into it a few years ago - to excess. No back on the wagon.
Considering it may be best for me to admit I over consume and use alcohol as a mask.

Still hanging in there with use of the following:
1. Virgin bloody marys (the spicier the better!)
2. Ritual brand zero proof spirits (“non bourbon” bourbon & gingers)
3. Untitled Art NA pilsner beers (found it locally on tap recently. I’ve had the cans in the past).

Keep it going everyone!

Pink? Maybe. Maybe not. You decide.

That was my story years ago and giving it up and working on the things I didn't want to feel was the best thing I've ever done. I also watched others in my extended family struggle (die or quit) and that was motivating. As they say, genetics loads the gun and environment pulls the trigger. I was an alcoholic at university before I ever was even aware of it. Best of luck.

A quick story. I was out with some people and a business client last week and said client could not let it go that I was not drinking, so I gave him my go to: Thanks but I've had enough already (and that shut him up!). That is technically true. While my last drink was over a decade ago, I've had enough for a lifetime! I've found that those typically bothered by my lack of drinking tends to be people who have issue with the drink themselves.

I’m happy to chat in private about my experience with losing my mother (and then estranging my father), but I will say that you can’t use alcohol as a shield from the grief. Nothing works except processing it.

All good here so far with one hiccup - spouse called dry January quits last weekend. It was a little tough to be drinking a pretty terrible red wine mimic while Mrs. giorgitd was drinking what I knew to be a very nice pinot noir. Still, all good. There is a store in town that is only no-alcohol drinks. Smartly for them and helpfully for many, they held an expo with vendors providing tastings and samples in early January. I didn't find anything new that I loved, but a few drinks that were good enough to bring home for a change of pace. Still having an after work mocktail and a glass of no-alcohol wine with dinner. Not as great as the real thing but satisfying enough and scratches the ritual itch. Watched some of the NFL playoffs this weekend with a couple of Athletic beers - totally fine.

Onward!

Happy Jordan Day! 23 days down, just 8 more days for the January crew!

Held strong today. Didn’t sleep well last night, I was emotionally raw and was processing a big teary discussion Id had earlier in the day. It’s amazing how trauma resurfaces and it’s fascinating not only how you choose to deal with it, but how you observe others dealing with your trauma reaction as well.

I hate feeling broken right now. Forcing myself to slow down in the bitter cold here has allowed the negativity to catch up. I’ve done so much work in therapy with processing abuse, neglect and future planning that did exactly nothing to prepare me for someone to overstep a boundary and cause serious ptsd. That was a wild ride yesterday. Thankfully I was wearing my seatbelt and survived the G forces of that whole thing

What was interesting is that the thought of dulling it all down with a glass of *anything* barely crossed my mind, because I was so shocked with how strongly I was feeling and processing that it turned into a bit of intrigue to see how far I could get to my “edge” without totally losing it. The other person in the conversation is going through some big swings including dry January, and I am so grateful for every one of these posts I’ve ever made here to help them deal with it with as much patience as I could muster.

Many more days to go for me. Grateful to have many hands to hold.

I have the mindset and personality that I can turn things on/off like a switch. I like a good beer or mixed drink as much as anyone but if all alcohol disappeared tomorrow I wouldn’t think much of it. I also don’t have an addictive personality.

As I said in this thread previously I’m doing this as part of losing 25-30 pounds. However long that takes. If it takes six months that’s no alcohol for six months. If it takes 45 days, it’s 45 days.

I feel for you folks that can’t turn it on and off like I can. I can’t imagine how hard this would be with cravings and addictions, however major or minor.

Thanks for sharing. A joy shared is a joy doubled. A burden shared is a burden halved. Regarding trauma, I've found the same resurfacing phenomena myself and dealing with it has never been a one time thing for me. It has been an iterative process that sometimes resurfaces for reasons I can't account for and sometimes for very clear reasons. Routine "maintenance" therapy and coming to terms with it being okay to talk about and be vulnerable has been the biggest healer. I couldn't have done any of those things with the way I used to drink.

I'm also focused on dropping weight, and no drinking plays right into that. I was drinking pretty regularly in 2023, but have been dry since 1/1. Additionally, I've cut way back on the sugar and carbs and have dropped about 8 or 9 lbs since Jan 1. I'm planning to continue with the DJ and hoping to drop another 10 or 15 lbs by the end of March. One of my A races for the year is a long self-crewed bike race on 3/30 over moderately hilly roads, so not carrying around the extra weight should really help.

I did this go around so far with only two cheat nights, a single drink each. Going from what I was doing before, I guess it was like a light switch for the body.

It should be obvious, but wasn't to me at all. But if reading this right, anytime you consume alcohol, particularly with meals and in larger amounts, the body chooses first to detox the alcohol out. And shuttles more things to fat storage while it's doing that.

I never knew this. So not just is it useless calories anyway, you won't necessarily burn it or keep it off by doing more triathlon things. You keep putting it there due to alcohol processing as a toxin first then your body stores more fat.

I had ramped my volume up November thru December. No real appreciable weight or fat loss. Ate about the same in January. But with only the two drinks. Whoa and behold the body let go of the fat (or stopped replacing it like it did when I was drinking) without the alcohol intake all the time.

My tri fighting weight is 170-175. I was at 200 starting this year. I'm certainly not "fat" at 200 as I'm a smidge over 6'0" with a muscular build but I haven't been doing my usual level of cardio and was certainly carrying around way more body fat % than I should and a little belly. That 20-something pounds is certainly felt on my knees and joints when I run. Plus I can't fit into all my size M tri gear. :-)

I’ve talked to a Columbia trained nutritionist about the processing of alcohol and as far as I know from what she told me is that alcohol is just normal calories until you hit around .08 BAC and then the body deems it as poison and at that point the body chooses first to detox the alcohol out.

Twenty four days down! We’re just about 80% of the way through the month with just a week to go. WOOO!

Now is about the time that if you’re leaving no alcohol January as just January, you should be thinking about your “re-entry” strategy. A gentle reminder that that first wet one is a doozy, so plan that accordingly with training and life timing,

For those who are loving this party and want to keep it rolling, there are quite a few of us that are taking a victory lap- join us!

Y’all, after the craptacular past several days, I had a breakthrough AWESOME day today. Trampoline effect is fun. I just need to make it through the next week before life gets, um, interesting and potentially really exciting. Zero cravings today, though had a glass of a Proxies red with dinner.

Another easy day here. I slept like a rockstar last night, had a productively long day, and had a fun evening. Tomorrow will be a bit of a test...heading out to see Wynton Marsalis and having dinner beforehand at my favorite Indian restaurant in the area. Lots of hectic nonsense going on to cap off the month, but lights at ends of tunnels excite me.

As the end of January is near ... checking in with some observations/data. First of all ... congrats to everyone for staying on the wagon ... and for providing updates and encouragement. It helped for sure. Just a few more days to go (for some of us). Just like the previous 2 years ... I did not experience an improvement in sleep. Neither did I dream more. But I loved Dr. Cupcakes's story about inventing Northern blotting for the Nazis. That was one of the funniest things I had heard in a long time :-) My RHR went down 3-5 beats ... HRV didn't change. Does anybody else think that taking off one month is easier than taking off one day?

On the downside ... I had my first calcium score CT scan this week and it came back at just under 200. Yikes. Nuclear stress test in 2wk. Family history of crazy high cholesterol levels but no incidence of heart attacks ... which is a bit weird by itself. Anyway ... after 55yr of a medication free life ... it looks like a statin is on the way. Again ... thanks for all the support in this thread

Great job everyone! So far this has been maybe my easiest dry January yet. No real cravings and I feel so good that I don't really miss drinking at all. I bought some n/a beer at the beginning of the month but I've barely touched it.

I had a challenging afternoon recenetly when my father-in-law wanted me to go to a bar and watch football with him. Fortunately they had Athletic available so I had a couple and it was just enough to scratch the itch. Tonight will be a big test as it's our company holiday party, but it's fun to watch my co-workers get loose and not have to worry about how I'm getting home. Plus it will allow my wife to have a few cocktails to take the edge off of spending the night with a bunch of people she hardly knows.

In addition to not drinking I've been dieting using My Fitness Pal. I'm down about 10lbs since 1/1 and I have 10 more to go to hit my goal of 168lbs. I've never tracked calorie intake before but it's been eye-opening, and easier than I expected without the empty beer calories. I've also had similar improvements to others in terms of RHR (down a few BPM), HRV (up a few points), and sleep quality. Generally just feeling really good and planning to continue until at least mid-February if not longer.

Onward!

Canned and tap kombucha seems like a growing trend as well.

i started watching some of Rich Rolls youtube in the fall, he drops comments about his experience in some of his content, with other folks. As endurance sports folks, it may be of interest. Peter Attia was one I found interesting regarding overall health.

Okay I need to share my INSANE dream last night.

I was in a dedicated triathlon camp village with a bunch of athletes and two other coaches that I'm close with in the community. Part of this camp was the opportunity to undergo some serious medical testing to figure out what kind of athlete you were from the inside out. I remember part of the dream where I had to lay on a hospital gurney and await anaesthesia. I don't remember what happened with that.

So there was this other athlete who was under the view of the other coaches and she suddenly fell really ill. Went into the medical facility and they were trying to figure out what was wrong with her. Somehow I was playing Dr. House on the outside of this and figured out that it had to do with her mitochonidrial proteins being completely rewired and inappropriately sliced by snRNP U6. I had to draw the mechanism for mRNA intron splicing on a whiteboard and run it back to the ICU.

I completely blame Baliman for this :)

Hahaha ... that dream is super awesome as well! And I am impressed how you stay up-to-date with scientific advancements. When you developed Northern blotting for the Nazis in the 1930s, that was revolutionary. Now that you exploit the function of non-coding regions of RNA ... have you ever wondered why you seem to focus on RNA? :-) ... regions that only 30yr ago (damn I am old) were labeled "junk RNA" ... you remain on the cutting edge of research. At least in your dreams :-)

Ironically ... the night after I wrote that I don't dream much during Dry January ... I had this very vivid dream about drinking New England IPAs with my friends, completely forgetting that I am not allowed to drink. Needless to say that I woke up petrified about my transgression. It took me several minutes to figure out that was a dream. Athletic Brewing hazy IPAs at the party I am going to tonight. Cheers.

Twenty eight days down, THREE MORE TO GO for the J-Crew!

Apparently there was some football on tonight. How did everyone do with the games on all afternoon?

I went to trivia at a local brewery, but had my two Athletics there. I love that the bartenders know me well enough to have one in hand for me as I’m walking up to the bar :)

Crazy dreams again last night, blurry now but had to do with some sort of spy agency and being chased into a train or something?

Tomorrow is a rough day for me on several fronts, but I’m glad I can approach it with clarity and hopefully a good night’s sleep.

Twenty nine days DONE, two more to go in January!

For those who have followed along over the years, you know that this is traditionally my worst day in the month. It's the anniversary of my mother's passing, and the grief tends to rip a big black hole of emotion right on open for a vast majority of the day.

I had a long day today. A really longass day. Meetings, more meetings, phone meetings, in person meetings, and a really important zoom meeting that wrapped at 8:30. All I wanted to do all day was curl up in the fetal position and comandeer my Kelpie to be an emotional support dog. Well, she was feral for most of the day and I had to adult right on past most of how I was feeling and all of the processing of this day that took place happened entirely too late in the day. But, I made it through. Lots of seltzer. And sugar. And tears.

The week doesn't let up for me until Thursday midday, when I get to have my first test of the NEW month. I need some seriously good sleep and strength to muster through.

Onward.

Sorry, Dr C. Those days are hard. I hope the week eases up on you.

29 and counting.

I found out the other day that my dad joined the dry January croud. That's 4 of us in my family, including my daughter, brother in law, dad, and me.

On to February.

In my area, WF is the cheapest place to get Athletic Brewing. They are several dollars cheaper than buying directly from AB or any of the other retailers around here that carries them.

Not sure when I will start back up, but in the vein of quality over quantity, what is everyone looking forward to?

I think a good bourbon, neat, and a big hearty red, are what I am looking forward to, but haven’t decided on which one yet.

Slightly premature congrats to all! Almost there!

Thirty days down, and according to Jean Valjean it’s ONE MORE DAY ONE DAY MORE.

It was a big day for me, to the point where I ordered food for survival mode two different times (a first while not on vacation). I had zero desire to have a drink, though I also have several bottles of delicious bourbon teed up here.

Rounding into February and I have a gauntlet to run right away- two big social events and then hosting a Super Bowl party next weekend. Thankfully I’ll have Q1 coach by my side for a lot of it.

Last day! Woot!

I am definitely planning on continuing to be mostly dry. I feel so much better, despite being sick the last couple days (common cold, I think). 13 pounds down since Jan 1st. HR and HRV variability are a little skewed right now due to my illness, but have trended strongly in a positive direction. Will MAYBE drink booze once a week. Planning no sticking with NA beers during the week. Of all the ones I have tried so far, Sam Adams NA IPA tastes the most like a hazy IPA. If you don't like hazy and prefer West Coast, it's not for you.

I could relate to this one. Me and a couple of friends wanted to do dry january this year but didn't think we could so we came up with "Dryuaryish". It's takes place over January/February and it's a competition of who could accumulate the most dry days over the two months. If you have a sip of beer/wine/spirits you "lose" that day. The person who has the least dry days at the end of February has to pay the dinner/drinks tab for the other two.

I am not surprised the additional competition has helped stay dry and while I haven't been dry for all the days, I have substantially decreased the amount of alcohol I consume which is a good thing and an unexpected outcome is I don't feel the need to drink as often (more dry days are killing the habit side).

While not a perfect system, the end result is less booze, feel healthier and less guilty. Hopefully, the reduced consumption continues on through March +++.

Good Luck to everyone.

Bourbon for sure. I got a bottle of Eagle Rare as a gift right before Christmas that I didn't open yet and has been staring at me, and have had a bottle of Buffalo Trace that's already open and also staring at me. There were three, maybe four days this month that REALLY tested my resolve, but I've hung in there and probably will for another week or so.

Sounds about right

What bugs me is that they have some varieties that sound incredibly intriguing, but won't be available at the local (who are only getting "core" offerings) and you'll have to pay a little more --- yes, I'm talking about "Emerald Cliffs" which could be like a Guinness?

Hey, guess what?

IT'S FINALLY THE END OF JANUARY!

For many of us where this has been the longest year of the week, we made it!

If you've been around since the 1st, you've officially made it 8.5% of your year without drinking. For some that seems entirely reasonable, and for others it has been a herculean feat with some AMAZING rewards.

Check in with yourself today and think back to how far you've come since starting the month. How's that RHR? How are your mile times? How's sleep treating you these days? If any of these changes seems positive, remember where it came from. Especially in tough times to come while you consider your re-entry strategy and how you want to redefine your relationship with alcohol in 2024.

For me, this has been my tenth Dry January in a row, and in a lot of ways the toughest one. I know I couldn't have done it as well as I did without your support and holding me accountable to check in every day. This week has tried to eat me alive and it's only Wednesday. I told Q1 coach tonight that I would have killed for a glass of dry AF red wine with dinner. I barely felt like eating dinner, so drinking my calories instead would have been a crappy idea. So would have consuming that red wine and then having to come in here to feel awful about it.

So, speaking of Q1...

Many of us have expressed interest in keeping this train rolling through at least part of the next month. I'll be posting daily for a while longer or my own sanity (after changing the title of the thread to "your relationship with alcohol in 2024"), and still plan to break my streak for my birthday on the second day of March. I've done longer dry streaks than this, but under way less pressured circumstances. Should be a fun exercise. Feel free to keep posting along with me! Who knows what other crazyass dreams will pop up in this next lunar cycle!

Thank you all for joining in this month. And for those of you who popped in to offer encouragement, chapeau to establishing firm boundaries with alcohol and thriving in its wake. Every year this thread inspires and thrills me in new and awesome ways, and 2024 has not disappointed.

Onward!

Woohoo, we made it!

Appreciated the comradery and strategies around how to continue, in the face of work and other pressure. Most importantly, have a lot of objective data from the effort, that will continue to guide me as I move forward to make more concious decisions about when and what to drink.

I do plan to continue into Feb and through the rest of the year remaining mostly dry.

Hey there!

Welcome to February! This is like the point in a race where the half marathoners split and enjoy their finish line, while the marathoners put their heads down and hop on the train to negative splitsville.

If you haven't checked in for the end of your Dry January, do it here!

If you're still going in February, check in! How is your momentum? Any new witching hours or trigger points?

I survived my insane week and four day frenzy, hooray! But, I'll be honest, not drinking at not one but TWO high pressure social events was REALLY SUPER DUPER HARD. I am so grateful I had my Q1 coach by my side for it because last night I probably would have said "meh fuckit" and had a drink. Especially being around so many friends and close members of my cycling club. Super especially after being called to Emcee the whole shebang with like two hours to spare. And SUPER DUPER ESPECIALLY after having the highest volunteer award bestowed upon me at the end of the night. Hoo boy that was emotional.

It's another week, and I'm starting it gassed with my toughest day of the whole week. I'll survive and I'm glad that I'll crash easily tonight, I need to catch up on about 15 hours of sleep. This weekend I'm hosting a fairly low-key super bowl party, and I'll probably be the only one not drinking. Whee.

Onward!

Went to 2/2 because the celebration on 1/1 seems to need some sparkly vino. Def less interest in the wine and more willing (eager?) to have a ABV-free drink instead. I think that I will continue to enjoy some of the no-alcohol drinks I've discovered during Dry Jan.

In whether I like it or not. I’ve avoided getting Covid since the beginning of it. I work one day a week as a volunteer at a soup kitchen. Woke Friday morning felt okay. As the day progressed I felt worse. Also received an email from the Soup Kitchen someone had tested positive Wednesday night Tested and negative. I had dropped my wife off at the school where she teaches and was supposed to pick her up since we were going to Chicago for a birthday party for one of our 5 grandchildren. So when I picked her up I’m wearing a mask. She inquires why and I tell her. We decided I should stay and did. Woke Saturday morning felt like garbage and still tested negative. Felt like a bad cold, mild headache and a slightly sore throat. Slept poorly Saturday night but felt okay in the morning. Tested positive and had a slight fever later in the day. Here we are 3 days later and I still have a bad cold. I just want to feel better and as part of my recovery I will do dry February.

Still dry as well. Having a quiet social weekend helped and I seem to have finally broken the habit of drinking a beer or two by myself. Merely a passing thought that was easily suppressed.

The additional week has enabled me to reach my goal weight, 179 (10 lb loss). I'm turning 60 in July and now weigh what I did in college. Woot!

The streak will end this weekend as I'm heading to Atlantic City for the Super Bowl. I'll enjoy myself (though not like I have in the past) and then I'll return to no solo and/or weekday drinking.

It's nice to see that others are continuing or have found their right balance as well. Kudos to all. Onward as you see fit.

That was my second round with covid. I had it Xmas 2022 also. That was way worse than this one.

I'm sorry it's been a shit ride for you this time around. This go for me has been barely a blip in my HRV/RHR, so that's why I thought it was allergies when it kicked in. It literally knocked my hrv in half from 42ms to 21ms. Rhr was up by 10+bpm from 52 to 65.

Hrv is back to normal (40+ the last two nights). Rhr is back to 60bpm...not quite normal, but getting closer.

It is interesting how long the body takes to return to homeostasis after the primary infection is over.

So, semi-off-topic... If you have/use a GPS watch with some of the biophysical metrics, you might know about HRV, sleep scores, training readiness (or their equivalents). Before Dry Jan, I could see - in each of these metrics - when I had no drinks, one drink or...more than one drink. But that pattern is pretty chaotic, so it was hard to be sure of 'cause and effect'. Well. Going from Wet Dec to Dry Jan was more than obvious in these GPS watch measures. FWIW, I've done DJ a few times in a row, but this is my 1st DJ with a modern GPS watch. My HRV went up immediately with DJ and rose for a week or more. HRV in Jan is higher than anytime I've recorded (early 2023). Sleep scores are surely better in Jan than Dec. Training readiness (the score) - I'm not sure how correlated that is with 'how I feel' when training (the 'real' training readiness) - was generally increased in DJ, it was less clear to me than HRV and sleep. FWIW, my resting HR did not noticeably decrease in DJ, as others have reported.

Okay, superbowl re-entry folks check in! How did it go, what did you have, and was it worth it?

I cracked open one of my Proxies bottles tonight, and I'm still up and watching this game. I have a short sleep turnaround which would REALLY hurt if I broke through as in earlier years on this day, but I'm confident I'll survive my hell day tomorrow.

Onward!

We watched it at my sister's house. I had a cup of tea and a grapefruit seltzer. My dad, neice, and brother in law all were sober as well. My wife, sister, and daughter had wine.

I didn't really care who won. Kind of an unusual game. Taylor's boyfriend won.

I'm glad you had company for the game. I said to Q1 coach halfway through the second quarter that it was going to come down to who made mistakes and when. Which isn't really a good way to watch football. Especially a game being advertised as Great football.

My nephew predicted that KC would jump out to a big lead early on. Then SF would play catch-up, and just come up short in the final 2 minutes.

Erm.... Not exactly how the game unfolded.

For the Superb Owl, had some Athletic Brews ( I like the IPA and the Hazy IPA ). I have to say I'm impressed with the selections available now, that go far beyond the O'Douls that I remember as a kid. Bonus, they even have fewer calories than regular beer!

That said, broke the dry streak on Saturday night, as I had an early Valentine's dinner with my wife at a fancy restaurant in Chicago. Tasting menu with wine pairings. Definitely worth it.

Noticed a slight dip in the overnight sleep / HRV metrics, but back on track again after a dry Sunday. So it's good to see that a once-in-a-while drink doesn't blow up the hard work, but definitely still planning and working towards remaining mostly dry.

I think much like eating a quality diet is making sure you have quality choices at hand, that staying mostly dry requires the same pre-planning. So, I'll be regularly stocking up on Athletic Brews and other NA options, to keep it an easy choice to continue making.

Well...not since 1 Jan. I started back in August. After Mom passed I was "fed up" with having let myself get back up to that weight.

I've lost about 10 lbs since 1 Jan.

18 lbs since we started this is a metric ton. congrats!

Still going strong, although in some ways I feel like it has gotten harder now that January is over. Having a definite end date makes it pretty easy, but now it feels completely open-ended and I'm a little unsure where to go from here. For now I'm going to keep it up.

Same. I think I self identify as a non-drinker now. I view it in some ways as similar to quitting smoking cigs. (Yes, its a triathlon website, and MOST would never smoke a cig or overeat, or blah blah - to hold off on the narcicists motivated to judge). Not as adictive, and not daily, and throughout the day, but I think for me to be my best - I should remind myself that I just dont drink.
Mind feels sharper.

The actual day of the 14th, I had a ton of work to do (23 annual reviews for my employees). So, we postponed it until Sunday.

On Sunday we went out to a Spanish tappas place. This place will make their entire cocktail menu as a mocktail, for half-price. I had a couple different ones and they were very nice.

I think that's my biggest issue with going out... That lack of non-alcoholic variety and complexity: ice tea, sodas, and water. I enjoy the flavor complexity of a well made bitter cocktail. I don't really care about the intoxicating effects, it's the palatable interest in a rosemary, cucumber mojito or whatever.

Anyway, we had a very nice time. We talked about plans (mostly for her artwork) for the year. The tappas were great, and we finished with a paella.

I didn't miss waking up feeling sluggish yesterday.

Last day of Feb. This last week has been a struggle. We are out at our lakehouse this last week. Turns out it's a much bigger trigger being out here to just want to relax with a nice Bourbon in the evening.

However, I've made it through... We head back to our home "closer to the city, but still country" tomorrow.

We start the run up to what would have been mom's 80th birthday... March 14th. Since mom was cremated we have held off doing a "grave" side ceremony. Dad has a joint plot in a native Texan cemetery for them, and he has been preparing her plot, headstone and the like. Anyway, we will do the final proceedings on her birthday with the nuclear family.

Goodness it's been a total struggle for me too lately. Like, here are these perfect moments that are stress-free that would feel better with a glass of wine in my hand. And those moments have been few and far between with the stress of everything else going on lately. Good on you for making it through the "easier" tough times!

I've been through that run-up as well. I also scattered my mom's ashes on her birthday, but no family plot and with just my father. That is a whole story for a whole other time (I also realized earlier this week that it's been 5 years since I last spoke to him). Sending you lots of peace and calming energy as you go through the processing of all of it again.

Who's still with us? Who's going stronger for longer?!

Today is my final day of No Alcohol Q1ish. Tomorrow I break it with a glass of Cava and then some kickass bourbon with a dozen of my dearest friends to celebrate my birthday. Not even the least bit sad or broody about it, as this is the best of possible ways to re-enter.

For those still on board (through Lent?) keep the party going here! I'm more than happy to keep the pom-poms out for those who love the streak :)

Thank you all for keeping me accountable and sane to start this year. I'm proud to say I've made it through almost 17% of the year without a drink, and I plan to use this time to hold myself accountable through my season as well. My general strategy that has typically worked is no alcohol on/before training days, which means maybe one day a week to partake. And quality over quantity always wins in my book.

Nice work and happy birthday! Thanks for all the encouragement along the way.

I'm still going and feeling good. This is probably the longest I've gone without a drink since high school and it's kind of a weird headspace for me. I didn't go into this January intending to stop drinking altogether, but rather to fully recalibrate my relationship with alcohol. I'm not really sure if that's possible or how long it will take, but I don't feel like I'm there yet so I'm going to keep rolling.

Good work.

Still a non drinker. I think, for me, that is what helps me. I self identify as a non drinker these days. Similar to quitting smoking.
I feel better rested and mentally sharper. Longest I have gone since military deployment almost 20 years back.
And my social calendar has not changed significantly. My bar trivia team continues to trounce the competition, one other member quit drinking last year.

To me, it helps that some trends include normalizing sobriety vs stigmatizing alcohol misuse issues.

Thanks for checking, Dr. Cupcake. The last two years, I went back to having daily beer(s) on Feb 1. This year is different. For a number of reasons unrelated to beer consumption ... none of them good by itself ... I was forced/motivated to make some lifestyle changes including diet. I didn't plan for this .... it just happened kinda naturally ... but I don't have beers at home by myself anymore. That really cut down on consumption. Pretty funny ... I am now hooked on peppermint tea at night. Anyway ... I am really happy with this and again, thank you all for this supportive thread

Athletic Brewing Co. has the best NA beer I’ve tried and by a far margin. Nobody else is remotely close. The Run Wild and Free Wave are pretty solid.

Guinness 0.0 is actually pretty decent. I had two of them yesterday.

Most NA beers taste like beer flavored water. Just horrible. Heineken might actually be the worst one. Their NA beer is awful. That’s saying a lot given the offerings from the big domestic brands.

I hear there are a lot of NA craft beers that are pretty good but I haven’t seen or tried them.

Pink? Maybe. Maybe not. You decide.
