Carmichael on Armstrong's plans
(lifted from another forum, from a talk CC gave recently (yesterday)?)

Question and Answer portion:

1. Lance’s future plans:
-The Chicago marathon this year
-He will probably do a lot of triathlons
-He MIGHT do an Ironman

This is big news. It would be very prudent to do a marathon before trying an IM. However, let's not forget Lance's future plans of last year:
- Go for hour record
- Make comeback in '06 to piss of the French
- Marry Sheryl

Seems pretty obvious that Armstrong is not always one to follow stated goals (outside of the TDF). Lots of subterfuge with that guy.

Are you suggesting Lance is not always honest and truthful?

Say it ain't so.

Interestingly the first two were things he discussed the possibility of and did not make any plans to actually do and the third is something that was mutual.

It'd be cool if he did the Capital of Texas Tri in late May in Austin. I bet he could break 2 hours fairly easily in an OLY without much real training.

Golden rule of Ironmaning - don't do anything for the first time ever on race day.

I'm sure that he'd like to have a good feel as to how well his body could handle it. Certainly it's not necessary, and handling the marathon is harder on the body than handling the Ironman run, but it might be good to at least once have a idea of how it feels to race that distance. I read that advice in the tri' mags from a couple of coaches, it seemed to make sense. Just a one time thing, not every year, not prior to every IM.

LOL! I always say you haven't had a real "discussion" on slowtwitch until two different people have offered up totally conflicting advice. You just bypassed the need for a second post-er.

A stand alone marathon and a marathon in a IM are two totally separate things.

I think doing a marathon prior to an IM has a very minimal benefit. If he wants to simulate an IM, he'd be better off doing a long bike/run but that's only my opinion.

I'm pretty sure Lance will do whatever he wants.

I think he'd have a good chance if he did some nice long, slow double-century rides.

I think you're referring to the Golden Rule of Ironman Nutrition.

And for the record, LVL never ran a marathon then won IMH in 8:04. Simon Lessing, at the IMLP awards speach said he was nervous because he'd never biked 112miles nor had he ever run a marathon.

I'm a 3-time Ironman, and the idea of doing a Marathon seems absolutely crazy to me...but i'm also a swimmer who's afraid of the water....

Cathy asks a great question. Is it helpful, to run a full marathon before an IM? It would be wrong to say that it is NOT helpful. However, it is not essential and many outstanding IM performances including amazing IM marathon run splits have been turned in by people who have NEVER run a marathon. Likewise many people with amazing standalone marathon times have been completely humbled by the IM run.

Many age-groupers regularly inquire about running a marathon as IM prep. My answer to them is run one if you have this absolute burning desire to run a marathon, but don't do it in the year that you are also looking to have a great IM time/race. Within the year of your IM race - running the marathon will be a neutral or negative impact.

I'm one that took 10 Ironmans before my 1st attempt at a marathon. Three of my run splits at Ironman- sub 3:39 and my 1st Marathon sub 3. Know need to do a marathon pre Ironman and honestly the two are only equal in distance and thats where it stops. The Marathon is more about pain and speed, IM more about patience, nutrition and gritting it out.

As for Lance, hope he does one. After all, staying in the public eye with the self marketing would stand to benefit his charities and that is a Great thing!

OK, it's Kona 2007, with only 10K of the run to go and Ditka, Chuck Norris, and Lance are battling it out for first place...who wins?

Chuck throws an elbow strike to Ditka's chest and sends him sprawling. Ditka does the Wendy/Sian crawl for 9.9K. Chuck tries the same to Lance, but Lance slips aside, puts on the afterburners, gives Chuck "the look" and pulls away for a clear victory.

You think Chuck Norris would have let them out of the swim without some 'accidental' contact?

Chuck Norris doesn't swim. He walks on water.

Of course, some people say the same thing about Lance . . .

It's Kona 2007 -- Chuck Norris and 2000 other people start the swim -- Only Chuck Norris exits the water.

Lance could not slip aside from a Chuck Norris roundhouse kick. It simply cannot be done.
