Sorry, I know these posts are getting old. But what the hell. I was really worried about these colors because I usually don't dig on green bikes, but I think this looks badass in person. It's quite different in varying light.

That's a super nice bike. Love the color and that's a nice build kit. The white bar tape and saddle are very classy.

My wife thinks that color looks like Limetime, but that is not on his list of colors. So that leaves Sherwood or Emerald green. I am curious though; why do a retro paint job and then put a bunch of black anodized stuff and carbon crankarms on the bike?
Do you also have a Yaqui tri bike? And what drop bars are those?

That is indeed Limetime. I believe it was the first time Ves used the color. I can't remember the names of the black and white but they're on the same page as limetime, the two paint chips one row down and to the right.
As for the retro/modern thing, that's just the way I am. I'd love to get my hands on a '67 Mustang Fastback and throw in a modern interior and trim. But I hate the idea that traditional styles have to stay with traditional technology. Heck, even Richard Sachs has moved on to ahead stems. I will admit that Ves talked me into those cranks, I was holding out for the Chorus Al ones. I just couldn't go compact though.
I appreciate the nice comments, guys.

I think those bits only look out of place if you think that the bikes Ves builds are retro (as opposed to high-tech). I think that a Mandaric is still a very competitive bike. Just because it is tech that has been around for a while, it doesn't mean it is outdated. New doesn't always mean better! I'm pretty sure lots of guys are still winning on Campy Record square-taper BB. Of course, the rumor is they are replacing it... But that bike is still superior to a lot of carbon bikes, etc. just because of the craftsmanship, etc.
Mandaric's are like Shelby Cobras. Yeah, they may be old skool, but they still kick the crap out of most bikes out there!

Don't get me wrong. I think the only thing that is remotely retro about the bike is the paint scheme. Ane even "retro" panel paint schemes have the panels on the down tube and the seat tube, not the top tube.

Palma Metallic Green! I painted a Datsun pickup that color after seeing it on a VW Scirocco. A most bee-utiful color!
A quick Google search returned this 914.

Awesome bike.
I bid seriously on a Lemond in a similar color scheme, complete with the white bits, on eBay last year...I didn't win it... maybe I'll have to order myself up one of these instead...

Wow, thanks all for the nice comments. I took it out for the first ride this morning and it was great. The Campy will take some getting used to but the shifting is really, really crisp. I love the way the bike rolls. It's really smooth, just like my Yaqui. My position is very different on this bike compared to my old road bike and that will definitely take some getting used to. I'm really scrunched up on my old bike. I can tell this is a better position as I wasn't moving all over the saddle and even though I was more stretched out my arms were more relaxed. I'm just so used to the old position that I think it'll take a few weeks to adapt. I'm just blown away how Ves can nail a build and setup just based on measurements. Both my Yaqui and this bike were spot on.
There were a couple of questions. The bars are the Easton EC 90. I'm not a fan of anatomic bars but I have yet to find the deep drop bars of my dreams so I went with these. As for a set of Campy Boras, I'd love a pair. But there's no way I'm gonna drop the qwan necessary to buy them. Anyone wanna donate a pair, you know, for the effort?

Hot hot hot! Ves strikes again, nice! May I make two small suggestions to perfect this wonderful bike:
- the rising stem looks out of place. Is that a 0 degree or 6 degree turned upwards? Would look better if flipped around, but if your position dictates it...
- why is there a medium length rear derailleur on the bike? Are you running a 13-29 and compact cranks? Otherwise I don't understand the need for the medium length.
Other than that, typical Yaqui/Mandaric hotness!

It's actually Scandium/Aluminum. I know Martin would get all over me for that, but deep down he wishes he had a bike that rides as well. Kicks the hell out of either of the steel frames I own.
As for the size, it was a custom build but the virtual seat tube (as it's slightly compact) measures just under 60cm.

I just went on the website and noted Ves makes steel and scandium frames. I've never seen one of his bikes, but he sure gets a lot of positive reviews on this site. Once both my kids are finished college I've promised to treat myself with a really high end road bike. I'll definately have a look at what Ves has to offer when the time comes.

How do the geometries compare between your road and tri bike? I had a frame on the way that was halfway between road geo and my DE geo Mariola. I found that my traditional road geometry was just too relaxed to allow me to shift back and forth so I rode my tri bike 100 percent of the time. After having to ride around on my mountain bike in Iraq, I decided there was some utility in having a second, slightly more relaxed geometry bike. Alas, I encountered some financing problems and had to hold off for a bit. I would have had it in a week... sigh.

I have a custom Mariola DL and it's a fantastic road bike. The STA is 74.5, but I ride it at 73 with my setback post. When Ves builds my next bike, I'll have him build it to the same geometry, but as a Mandaric with round tubes (Davo if I win the lottery).
Just tell me it doesn't make you faster!!
