Who was the best Lance?
Ongoing debate: who was the best Lance? If there could be an all star Tour De France from the last seven years, it would be a Lance on Lance spectacular! Which Lance would be the best Lance? Would it be the unheard of Lance of '99? The desperate Lance of 2003? The retiring all-out Lance of 2005? If all of the Lance's of Tours past were put up against each other with their respective teams, who would win the Tour? Only Slowtwitch knows the answer!

Lance who? LeMond was the real tour champion. When LeMond was winning, we didn't have to hear "Sheryl Crow's Thoughts" every day on freaking OLN. Lance is on drugs. Good riddance.

No positive tests in the day and age of TESTING? If you don't think blood doping / performace drugs were just as much in the 80's then you know very little about endurance sports. The testing just wasn't there (and know I'm not saying LeMond cheated).

Innocence until proven guilty... Lance is a good role model.

Yeah, instead we got a whopping 1 hour of cbs coverage on sunday with John Tesh usually pre-empted by NBA playoffs...

Wasn't it LeMond that couldn't keep up with the leaders in the '89 tour until he got a couple of magical "iron" shots? Kind of strange that it takes normal people weeks to recover from anemia via iron supplements, but LeMond went from pack fodder to dominant in just a day...

The new one came out? I was talking about the one with lance on the cover and the wrist band as his halo. Gag.

Joel Osteen is too funny.

And he kicked everyone's ass.

On today's stage -- Giuseppe Guerini -- He looks like a guy who would be named Giuseppe -- what a cool name. He should name his kid Pinnochio.

'86 lemond would've beaten '03 lance but not '04. '89 lemond was a dynamic year, oaky with a whiff of vanilla. '95 indurain was a good year, what with its taste of cherries.

but a '62 anquetil, with that hint of cassis, wine spectator gives it a 98.

What a great reply Dan...I am glad that I am not the only one who thinks that maybe, just maybe Greg was pretty good on a bike too...

Oh...and Greg not only have all of France against him...he had no real team for him.

Fine Vintages -- but for a Beer Drinker like myself -- There was just something special about the Malty Hinault of '79, or the ESB of Hinault 82.

Another great was the Stout of Roche in 87 and of course the year of the bitburger or budweiser - 1980 Joop Z.

These are far from Fine Vintages - these are the everyman's beer

I'm sorry - but Lance will not vanish. In five years, the phrase "I'll take Lance Armstrong in the center square for the block, please" will be as common as "Nipsey, do you have a poem for us?"

The '62 vintage was not that great, but not surprising the Wine Spincter gave it a 98. Suckling never found a Bordeaux he did not love or overrate. I would have pegged you for following Parker, or at least Tanzer. ;)

Let's face it, in his day Lemond was pretty special too...going one step further, to win one, let alone multiple TDF's, goddamn amazing in my book.

And that last stage in '89----very hard to top that one *ever* as far as an exciting stage, and that it decided the race by 8 seconds after 3 weeks of racing...what more can you say?

Lance's 7 straight Tour wins will probably not be repeated, but never say never. The focus required for that would drive most crazy. You can speculate about PED's as many here (and elsewhere) do, but no one can argue his work ethic, attention to detail and the determination and drive he displays with regards to the TDF. Just as Tiger Woods altered the landscape of golfing---imagine, golfers working out and kind of becoming athletic!!---Lance has forever changed how those serious about winning the tour will approach it.

I have been into cycling a long time. My problem is -- I met Greg Lemond before he ever won a tour and frankly he was a "silver spoon born in his mouth" asshole. I ran into him again after he won and he was an even worse asshole. Of course he might have been an asshole to me since I was hanging out with Alexi Grewal at the time.

I just don't like him (Greg Lemond) as a person.

I don't know him at all, other than what I have read and/or heard...this is not the first time I've heard the comments you have made. Speaking in terms of personality, he may be a dickhead but as far as his mark on cycling and the Tour, that speaks for itself.

Personally, he lost me when he took some of his verbal shots at Lance last year when they weren't warranted; he did sound like an ass at that point.
