I think you might be wrong as well, Bianchi was pretty heavily into titanium bikes in the late 90's. Looking for a pic now.

Almost certain it wasnt a walser. Bianchi used to make an odd shaped tt frame, not sure if it was monoque or aluminum.

I don't recall seeing Leder on a funny shape bike besides a red softride one year in Kona (when he was DQed).

It was Roth 1997, I'm looking at it on DVD at the moment.

Massive down tube runs from the bottom bracket up to 1/2 way along the massive top tube.

No lower part of seat tube.

Labelled up as Bianchi.

that he used(bianchi) in IM roth in 1997 when van lierde i think broke 8 hrs. will look for that issue of mine

Oh yeah! I remember that now. With big ugly welds if I remember correctly.
While LVL was riding a yellow colnago with 650 at the front and a 700 at the back

...that 1997 Roth was the fastest race of all time. Hellriegel goes sub 8 and still finishes 4th and off the podium! Probably got him revved up to take everyone out at Kona 1997!

Well, let's add Tony Rominger's World Hour Record on the boards of Bordeaux at sea level on a round tube bike.

Legend has it that he also set the record on the Palomar climb that year in the spring (also on a round tube bike I presume...)

The Triathlete cover is correct for 1996 when Leder first went under 8 hours.

He rode the ( funny ) Bianchi in 1997 when he once again went under 8 hours ( 7:56:39 ) as did Zack ( 7:51:42 ) and Hellriegel ( 7:57:21 ).

Unfortunately though, Luc Van Lierde clocked 7:50:27 !

i think one of the most amazing picture(triathlete magasin) i have ever seen of triathlon is the one of Thomas and Lothar at the finish line on that day looking at each other with the clock over them....... it s unbeleivable to see the look on there face.....getting 3rd and 4th......after going sub 8h!!!

I've been googling all over the place, trying to find some info on that bike. Pretty sure that Bianchi didn't build it. Ute Murkel, in the same race was riding a Bianchi that looked almost like a rebadged Cervelo P2. As for Paulo's Walser guess, Leder does ride a Walser now, rebadged as a Cube to keep the sponsors happy.

i will agree with you...i m pretty sure bianchi didnt build this thing..... as for muckel....she was riding the standard biancho crono.... i have seen a lot of these and look like the old p2 for sure.

i will ask lothar about the bike in 2 weeks.....on our way to a sub 8h ironman!!!!!!!!!! yeah right!?!?!?

running the last 5km in 16.20, passing Zach with 2km to go, as if he were standing still.

an image similar to Allen passing Cordier in Nice (I think in 93?) running the last 3km in 9.20

Not to be picky but that bike wasn't completely round tubed as some of the "tubes" had been flattened out to lower the frontal profil. Especially the fork and seat stays were pretty narrow. Don't know how much that actually helped but they did pay some attention to frame aerodynamics. He went pretty damn fast on that thing that's for sure though..

I think I saw a bike just like that at Target. It was a Magna and it had springs, twist shifters and a metallic flake paint job. Why would anybody pay for the Bianchi name when they could get an even better bike for much less.

Yep, trawling through the archives a few months ago and came across that one. It's a classic!!! LVL on the cover can be seen riding a round tube (steel?) colnago, with an ungodly number of spacers as well?????

1997 was pre-EPO testing. Might be a while before we see that again.......

Bjorn, good catch...I was about to post the picture of Rominger with "55 k in an hour on round tube and consulting from Dr. Michele Ferrari, to pre empt the anticipated discussion" :-). Regardless, it was silly fast, and really the early to mid 90's were the golden age of the World Hour Record. The UCI really killed the interest in that event. No one cares that Boardman broke Merckx's old record on a conventional bike...it was more fun seeing the record going from Moser's 51.151 in Mexico City, to no attempts in a decade to the Obree-Boardman-Rominger-Indurain (and back to Moser) revolving door of record attempts, with every crazy position that anyone could ride a track bike in :-)

I think there should be a Bjorn world hour record attempt. What will the establishment say when a triathlete from some obscure Nordic nation better know for skiers and hockey players, takes the record on a bike made by a company from another nation better known for its speedskaters and hockey players? :-). This would be the real "Viking Project" :-)

I think the Swedes are still in a dream thinking that Norway is part of their territory, but the entire point is that when anyone from outside the UCI old school cycling mafia of nations kicks ass, then the UCI has to go change the rules. If Indurain invented the superman position, or if Hinault (for example) had ridden on Obree's first bike it would have all been cool...but Scotland...

The day Magnus Backstedt won Paris-Roubaix, Sweden became a cycling nation :-)

pretty close, but I don't think so. one of those just sold on ebay. but then, this one is a 51 and leder probably rides a 56-58, so the proportions might be different.
