When I saw the title I did the quick math and I'd give the roughly 13,000 ST members $5000 to buy new bikes with. Since he took the lump sum that only leaves $20mil to live on. We're all going to need to get fist'd so that might eat up another mil or two.

As far as me and how I'd spend it...lots of things in my plans (just gotta win it now). This is by far my favourite question to ask people though..how to spend that kind of money. People who live at or below the national average have no idea what that kind of money means. They try to spend it..but when you're used to not having it to spend it gets confusing..especially once you start making interest on what's left.

Well I always said if I won the lottery I would donate half of it to charity. So with the remaining $110m. .no need to incoporate taxes b/c there will be a ton left over. . .

1. Pay off all family debt
2. Buy a house in San Diego with a main residence in Florida.
3. Put $50 million in fixed income funds so that I can quit my job and earn interest(let's call it my yearly salary) to ride my bike and go to the beach!
4. Travel to alot of exotic locations for races
5. Buy more bikes(For me and my friends)
6. Open a bike shop

Dude seems full of crap. He says he is now worth $128 to $130 million after 1-1/2 years. He started with $45 million in municipal bonds and $35 million allocated aggressive. Munis returned 4.1% over the past 1.5 years and even if his $35 million doubled that doesn't give you $128 million.

I could live just fine on a $45 million muni portfolio - 4.5% coupon gives you $2 million of income.

Also you don't turn $75 million into a billion in ten years when half your portfolio is allocated to muni bonds. Somebody is giving him bad financial expectations. $70 million compounded at 25% for 12 years gives you a billion. However, he bought into real estate at the top of the cycle and I'm sure that will give him 25% a year for the next 12 years!

I'd buy my life back. Seriously.

And then I'd hire someone to wake me up 2 or 3 times per night so I could laugh uncontrollably more...

I would buy out IMNA and make it so that only triathletes who can break 12 hours could participate in IM's.

I would then buy Cervelo and Zipp and cut the prices in half so everyone could have one.

I would get $110 million in $20 bills...head to a strip joint and be king. The rest I would blow.

Ditto the sentiment about poor financial reasoning. His part about his investment position set off my BS detector.
To get to $1B from his starting point would mean doubling his money three times in 10 years, indicating an internal rate of return in the neighborhood of 25%. People get that kind of IRR by dumping their life savings into starting a business then working their ass off at it, with a 75% chance they go broke anyway.

It is completely unrealistic in the financial marketplace.

I happen to work for a family that won a bit lotto jackpot, and we have targeted a 9% annual return with minimal investment risk. So far they have given away $3 mil (from an original prize of $20 million) to charity and still have more money today than the day they started (3 years ago). I think they'll beat the odds.

Good luck to him though, $65k for bikes is still a lot less than some people in his position would blow on a car, or a weekend in Vegas.

I can't conceptualize how much money that is.

I think I'd spend a lot of it helping kids. When we went to find giving-tree gifts this Christmas, one of the tags I had chosen was for a 5 yr old boy; he asked for underwear for Christmas. I can't imagine what the rest of that child's life is like if he wanted underwear for CHRISTMAS! kids should get to ask for toys and books and fun stuff, not clothes :P it was heartbreaking. So I would want to spend a good portion of that money on those little things that would make a kid's life just a little bit brighter.

Okay, you twisted my arm; I'll do it. Its going to need a better name than the Tour of Dave G though. That sounds like a pojrn movie.

I'd start a Tour de US with long TT stages (think 56-112 miles) and long TTT's to keep things interesting. I'd make sure that there were some really nice viewing venues as well, maybeeven a couple of Velodrome stages, that would be sweet.

There are funds, open to individuals, that have averaged an IRR of over 40% for more than a decade. It wouldn't be a great policy to dump all your money in one but it's not "completely unrealistic".

FWIW I would buy a tiny (but secure) cottage in the Pyrenees within a short drive of an airport. It would have nothing in it apart from a bed, a wine rack and a Condor Classico road bike. I'd spend must of the rest on maintaining a Lear Jet at JFK to take me there any time I wanted.

Agreed, it has occured in a relative handful of investments among thousands of possible choices. That doesn't mean one could plan on doing it as a matter of strategy. In my business, if I told a client we were seeking 25% annual returns I would be exposing myself to serious liability. I doubt you would find any reasonable professional who would recommend such a goal for any person who was unwilling to risk losing his whole bankroll.

Without in terms of the fund - it's their IRR I'm talking about. How you put together your minimum investment is up to you and will obviously affect your personal IRR.

I'm sure some of private equity firms like Kleiner or KKR have posted 40% annualized returns on some of the funds but to tell someone they are going to average 25% per year on a "portfolio of real estate and oil and gas" is not very prudent. He needs to ride one of his 17 bikes down to my firm for a does of fiscal reality.

I'd buy a bunch of playdough. Cause that stuff is cool.

I also have always wanted to tell the bartender to buy the house a round. But I would only do it one time in a bar that holds less than 40 people.

I'd make sure my parents and brothers and sisters were nice and comfy then buy a shack somewhere tropical and a cabin somewhere mountainous. I have no interest in mansions, yachts, or $200,000 cars even if I could afford them. There are some places I'd definitely travel to though. I had an initial selfish thought that I'd buy a big chunk of desert and build an iron-distance course far away from heavy smog and traffic but I really don't think I'd be able to convince myself to haul a bunch of asphalt out there and spread it all over the ground if it came down to it.

Don't forget about taxes. The only smart thing this guy did is put money in munis; his investment sense does not sound good, but at least with munis he should not lose any principal and get a nice piece of income, just based on brute force (huge principal).


You need to remember that this guy is sharp. He developed a "system" to beat the lottery. By choosing the 15 most commonly drawn numbers from the lottery for the previous 6 months, he was able to predict the 15 numbers that would be most likely to be in future winning combinations. Anyone who would actually believe that previous lottery numbers have any bearing on the future outcome of random trials is a total moron. What I couldn't figure out is, since he has developed a winning "system" why not invest his winnings in the lottery, as he would surely reach a billion dollars in a few years time.

BTW I just bought my quick pick for the $345 million NYMega tonight. Why waste time "picking" numbers when it is random anyway. If I win, I will give away 100 bikes on ST.

$220 MIL...hmmm. I'd use it as a down payment on a nice castle in France. I'd py the rest in nice, affordable monthly installments.
