PLEASE Help Irondad's daughter, Kiersten, get a new bike
Quote | Reply
Anyone up for another Slowtwitch to the rescue? If we all throw in just a few bucks each- we can get her back on a new ride in time for her upcoming races to replace her bike which was stolen last night

I'm in - anyone else?

ok - can't get a hold of Robert

If you are happy to trust me on this one - let's do what we did with Maurice last year

my paypal address is andrewjjoyce@sbcglobal.net

I will start with a $25 contribution personally - any other funds hitting that account will be recorded and I will provide anybody with a full transaction record print out to show the movement of the funds directly to Robert. Complete visibility of cash flow for anyone seeking it. 100% of funds will hit him

He is an ST good guy and his kids rock - let's ensure that his daughter does not face a setback and can continue racing - future champion on our hands here.

I am going to reach out to a contact at Cannondale to see if they can come to the party a little on this too

It might be helpful to determine in advance what will happen to the donations/bike if the bike is recovered in useable condition. Perhaps a charity could be selected as a second beneficiary.

I have spoken with Robert and he is very moved by everyone's thoughts and offers...as is his daughter....what an incredible little girl.

should the bike be located, or should there be funds remaining he suggested we donate these funds or create a fund for juniors in this sport which I personally think is a wonderful idea...helping youngsters get their first bike or whatever.

I am hopeful we can get enough cash that through the support os some manufacturers, we can get her back close to where she was equipment wise. her bike was semi custom with custom lightweight cranks, zero g brakes etc etc.

If the bike was just stolen, isn't it a little early to start collecting for a new one? I would give it a week to see if it turns up. Considering how unusual the bike is (very small size racing bike) it will be hard for the thief to get rid of it without drawing attention.

I appreciate your sentiment, but have a little hope in local law enforcement. I had a racing bike stolen and recovered as a kid. It was damaged, but they made the thief buy me a new one.

In the event this bike is recovered before the cash is touched - every person donating cash will receive their donation back. It is being held in the paypal account - in the event the bike is not located in time for her to race in a few short weeks.

By having the cash ready to go, should the bike not be located and Robert needs to purchase a replacement, he will have the funds at his fingertips immediately.

I appreciate your concern - it is certainly valid but the bike may never be recovered too.

Hi everyone this is Kiersten. I've never posted before but I know you know all about me from my dads posts and our blog. Don at Austin Tri Cyclyst calls me the most famous kid on slowtwitch! HaHa! I was really sad when I found out my bike was stolen because it fit me perfectly and because the color matched my team mates and team jersey and mostly because it was fast, but when my dad told me about all the emails, calls and messages it really made me feel better. My dad says it's always good to give things so he's always giving things and helping other kids and their famlies with their bikes, so I really appreciate what you guys have done and are doing.

Anyway I just wanted to say hi and thank everyone very much!

I e-mailed Robert and told him that I would fix them up with more race wheels, seats and some other things that I had put on Kierstens bike when I worked with her last year. She's a dedicated racer and a neat kid. Irondad is good as gold so I wouldn't be worrying to much about him skipping town with the cash.

Hey guys... I can't even tell you how much this touches our hearts. When Andrew first called and told me I honestly choked up (ask Andrew) thinking about how you guys were concerned enough about a young girl you had never met to do something like this. When I told Kiersten she said "I'm happy but I'm crying". I guess we're both that strong but sensitive type ;-) I was reluctant to accept anything because I am a very independent person and have never asked for anything in my life, let alone received anything, but Andrew and Kiersten convinced me to accept your generous offer. I say that with these caveats:

First, I told him that I had always wanted to start something like a junior development fund... something that could be Slowtwitch's legacy... and that whatever funds were collected and unused went towards establishing something like a Slowtwitch Junior Development Fund, or something like that, for juniors from Slowtwitch that need bikes. There have been tons of posts of new parents with young cycling or triathlon hopefuls and some of these might need help in the future. What an awesome and rewarding legacy that could be for Slowtwitch to help a junior up through the ranks.

Secondly, not that they don't deserve it but with just a few exceptions I have never bought my kids new bikes or components. They were typically from sponsors, from eBay, bought used, belonged to teammates or were demos, so my preference would be if we could find one of these Cannondale's (or similarly-sized bikes) in a past year's model offered for a reduced price somewhere or even on eBay. Several people have emailed me regarding their Cannondale connections so that also might pan out and make a bike available at a greatly reduced price. (Someone mentioned the Trek WSD bikes in another thread and while they are great bikes with similar geometry and price, the Treks are almost 3 pounds heavier and when you're only 70 pounds and put out less than 200w, 3 pounds makes a noticeable difference to her so that's why I went the Cannondale w/ light stuff route.)

Thirdly, if her bike turns up in the future that either that bike or the new bike be given to the Slowtwitch Junior Development Fund, or whatever we call it, for the next junior from Slowtwitch that needs a bike.

Fourth, maybe we could establish as part of the junior development fund a Team Secondhand Racing Juniors. As my kids outgrow their bikes and clothing I'm always giving away wheels, tires, saddles, shoes, helmets and components I've modified to other kids or their parents so maybe in the future we can have a depository for these things that can be used for other juniors.

In short, I'd like for the legacy of this assistance to Kiersten to be something that can continue to help juniors in the future.

Lastly... about your beneficiary... Kiersten is an honor student at a magnet school for gifted and talented students, a very good and hard-working child, and one of the sweetest kids you'll ever meet. That applies to both of my kids.

Kiersten and I thank you for your generosity, your kind messages and emails, and your concern... it truly makes us feel part of the Slowtwitch family!

(Sorry for the long post, but you know how passionate I am about kids!)

latest update this morning is $1200

We're going to be looking at around $2K (to replace her ride with something remotely similar) so we have a little ways to go - but the response has been awesome so far.

We have made contact with each of the companies which manufacture the different parts on the bike to see if we can obtain a discount to purchase direct.

Will kep the updates coming but thanks again to everyone for chipping in - some very generous donations in here.

Nice thought - but we are not expecting anything from anyone in particular - given Kiersten's body geometry there is only one bike out there which fits her and it is this specific Cannondale. Hoping to generate enough to simply purchase one - if a manufacturer comes to our assistance - even better still

Yes, unfortunately Kiersten is really limited in what fits her. Every time we go to Austin Tri Cyclist she gets on the 48cm Cervelo's and they're still too large for her. I always have her get on bikes to see if they fit but always end up with the Cannondale Feminine as the only one that fits. I've gotten some emails from mfgs and dealers about frames that might be close to the Cannondale and we're taking a look at that as well. In that regard, I hope I'm responding to all your PM's and emails, but if not please have patience or send it again... I promise I'm not ignoring anyone I'm just overwhelmed.

I've spoken to Andrew several times about all of this, and one of the ways that I would accept anything would be if I could give as much as I received... to pay it forward, as it were. We have both seen the movie Pay it Forward (highly recommended) and discussed the concept and we both feel that we can do something huge (a Demerly term ;-) here and I want to do my part in getting it rolling.

In that regard I'm going to pay it forward by donating a bike, some Zipps and two complete junior kits.

Several years ago my nephews competed in a triathlon after watching Kiersten compete in one. My oldest nephew and godson finished third using my mountain bike with slicks and loved it. Hoping to get him hooked on the sport I bought him a second-hand (if I recall correctly) size 54 Trek 2300 with Ultegra components. I also gave some 700c tubular Zipp 404's (with the three stickers, but pre dimples) with Conti tires and a spare tire that I had originally bought for myself but hadn't used yet. To make a long story short he's going off to college and I want to contribute the bike to the junior TSR or whatever we end up calling it. I will have it completely tuned and ready to go for a junior in the 5'6" to 5'10" range. I can live without the wheels and they won't fit my kids bikes so they're going as well.

Kiersten will also be involved in this and will help me put together two complete kits for a boy and girl. It will include shoes, socks, shorts, jerseys and helmets for a 7-10 year old boy and girl. All will be new exept the shoes which are really hard to find in kids sizes but we have some barely used and very nice Sidi and Nike shoes that we'll include. It will be everything that a kid needs to ride except for the bike.

I will also throw in a 700c full-carbon fork and some other components to go towards building up another junior bike, and some junior-sized components like small saddles etc to build up something for a younger junior.

So... hopefully the kids and I can pay it forward and put in as much as we receive out of this and really get this junior development thing going.

Its a pleasure -thank you

To elaborate a little on Robert's email - the bike is he going to donate to the Slowtwitch Junior development fund is not one which would fit Kiersten, nor would the wheels it comes with - they are 700c and she can only ride 650's.

Rather than sell that bike to try to recover cash to purchase Kiersten a new ride - through the kindness of ST folks, not only will we be able to contribute significantly to her getting a replacement ride but another youngster will be able to benefit through Rob and Kiersten's generosity and appreciation.

What an amazing legacy this may have just started.

Good luck to you Kiersten. Keep up the great work in school and on the race course. I'm sure you know this already, but you have one amazing Dad!

I wish I was head of Cannondale right now. It would be great to be able to show up with a brand new bike for Kiersten. Not only would I be able to make a young athlete's day - I'd probably have a fan/customer for life. Not to mention all the good will I would generate in the triathlon community. Maybe we should start an email campaign on her behalf...

Was the donation button thing set up? I'd like to help out but don't have paypal. I'd be willing to do it via credit card though. A large number of people seem to have no trouble with paypal but my bank keeps telling me (when I ask their advice on it) that I'd be crazy to link my bank account to any online service that will have direct access to the account like that. Am I/my bank being overly paranoid?

This is a longshot but there is a custom builder in Seattle that caters specifically to women. Rodriguez frames are made out of R&E Cycles. I see a lot of women on these and a lot of them are very small frames. They make 15 sizes for women.

Robert, I am sorry to hear about the stolen bikes.

I just sent you a message to your gmail address regarding my contribution.

I phoned Sergio Jr. and he was shocked to know what happened to that very special bike. We both remember how specially built it was. He thinks it is a very good idea to help Kiersten replace that stolen bike. He has been away from town the last two days, training with the State team at the velodrome, but asked me to say hello from him and wish her the best.

I am sure that Kiersten will be riding very motivated and faster than ever in a few more days. :)

Best wishes to all the family.

Sergio

I never hook up my bank account to my PayPal account. I only use it a couple of times a year. Therefore, I set up a credit card on it, make the payment and then immediately remove the credit card. I'm sure this isn't foolproof, but it works for me.

I just sent money too as this is just a bad situation. I have met the Irondad clan last year when they visited Chattanooga and Robert, Kiersten and Kees are a very cool family and their passion for cycling and all other things related is awesome.

I figured though that the bike is the least Irondad has too worry about since Kiersten seems to have set her mind on a MINI Cooper S like mine. :-)

What size and model was kiersten's frame? I'm formerly a Cdale engineer and still have contacts in Bedford/Bethel. Depending on the size, there may be a demo bike/frame that Cannondale NEEDS to sell. I also might be able to score an industry price. Give me the details and I'll see what I can do. Send me a message offline at: pcsandre@gmail.com. At the very least I'll be donating!

Just got in the door from traveling all day - when a few of these transactions clear ( a couple are going to take 3 or 4 days) we will have a total in paypal of close to $2100 - not including a couple of checks being mailed

This has been a huge effort - here are a few irons we have in the fire currently with regard to replacing the bike/parts.

Several bike stores have offered to get a bike into our hands at their cost - very generous offers and we are waiting to hear back from Cannondale

Several people with contacts at Cannondale have forwarded this fundraising info to their Cannondale crew - and we are waiting to hear back from them

We have an email into the guys at Zipp and at Hed - to see if we can get a discount on some lightweight wheels to replace those which were on the bike when it went missing

So we are now waiting to see what comes of the contacts - IronDad and Kiersten are certainly well positioned now to get her back on the road - a huge thanks to everyone at ST - seriously - a HUGE thanks!!

Thanks, I know I have a great dad because he does everything for me and helps me train and takes me to all the races and at every race he gives me a kiss on the starting line and says have fun and do your best and then he goes to the hardest part of the course to cheer me on. My dad told me Andrew is expecting a baby so I'm going to find out if it's a boy or a girl and get him a gift for his new baby to thank him for everything he has done.
