I can stand about 5 minutes on a treadmill, so I guess less than a mile. I run outside in ANY weather.

I did 20 at the gym once.

If there is no fan directly in front or above, I can't do more than about 45 minutes b/c my shirt gets so saturated that sweat starts flying off and onto the people next to me.

I agree with that. But It was pouring down raining yesterday. I'm just not going to run in a rainstorm. I have but it f&8cks up my shoes, and socks. Its still doing it right now.

I ran about 12 on it and I was just wondering if I had a good fan and water and food, how long I could go on a zero incline. I didn't have a fan, and I think if I had one I could go quite long on one of those. I think it would be much longer and easier than outside, obviously because of all of the different factors.

Its interesting to watch others come and go on the machine next to you. It seems most people run about 2 miles TOPS, and do wierd shit like jacking it up to 8-9 MPH, and then run that for about 300 yards and start fidgeting with the controls, bring it down to 6 MPH and run a mile and stop. I watched many people run on these things but got the impression none of them could actually settle on a correct MPH.

Dude how do you get people to run next to you. I always walk up to my favorite TM or the ones next to it, hop on then turn to the person on my favorite treadmill and ask them to pull myfinger. I've been doing it so long, you can tell the new members.

They have some tread mills at my health club that are not one continuous band but separate segments. Runs much more like a track and I've had it down to 5:30 before, I think it goes faster but it just gets a little sketchy running that fast on a treadmill watching soaps.

Longest run I've done is around 10 mile, much prefer suffering outside what ever the conditions.

It's true I have a limited sample, since I only try them when I am traveling and can't run outside because of timing, but I do make the point of checking the upper speed limit each time. I wish I could try one of those faster ones. Sounds like fun!

Most of the ones I've used (including the ones at my gym) top out at 10mph as you say but there are some faster ones out there. You have to concentrate so hard on your form that it's as mentally tiring as it is physically.

Based on the replies so far, I guess I'm a freak... I actually kinda like treadmills. It's 20 - 40 below (sometimes colder and that's not including the windchill) and covered in snow and ice for several months each winter here, you learn to deal with treadmills and trainers whether you want to or not. Of course I live in a very small remote town and I know the best times to go so I can often have the gym all to myself which helps. The view out the windows is looking out over a lake which is nice. I kill the lights so it's just sunlight through the windows, make sure the tv is off, put the fan on high and I'm fine for as long as I want to go.

For the original poster - I did 17 miles once. At a treadmill right in front of the "20 minute max on cardio equipment sign." I felt like such a rebel (it was, by the way, my longest run before my first mary.)

Me - I did a full marathon in preparation for the NYC marathon but all it proved was how important it is to learn to pace yourself - walked 2.38 on the treadmill (with the 1% incline etc.) then blew up in the race having gone sub 34 for the first ten k - beyond stupid.

Incidentally my Uni running club hold the 24 hour treadmill record at over 280 miles.

I usually run several half marathons on the treadmill over the winter, but never anything longer. I have a mild case of asthma, and running in the cold really aggravates it, so if it's below about 30 degrees, I run inside. Treadmill running really seems to help, forces me to maintain my pace, and helps with mental focus. A lot of times when I do long runs outside, my mind wanders and I find my self barely jogging along.

14 miles twice,

At sea, the treadmill was outboard the main engines so it was about 98 degrees and I had to wear double hearing protection, the ship was rocking, so just staying on the treadmill was exciting. The treadmill would also shut down at 90 minutes. The first time that happened it was bit of a surprise. And there was a big chill water valve about 3 inches in front of my face (which was good for hanging a camelbak on).

I haven't been on one in probably 5 years, but the longest before that was only around 45 minutes. I love running outdoors in all conditions and I like to run fast. On the treadmill, 6 minute mile pace feels like a sprint so I found it discouraging.

I just broke my indoor riding record by 3 hours training for Florida. I'm still at only 5 hours, but I hate the trainer too.

I did 2.5 hours once, I forget what the mileage came out to. It was my last long run before the Disney Marathon two years ago and we got 28 inches of snow the day before, so the roads weren't clean enough to get a good quality long run in. The run itself wasn't bad, the part that sucked was since it was on a Monday afternoon at the local Y, I wound up having to watch soaps the whole time with the women who were walking/running on the other treadmills.

I'm not sure how long my longest-ever TM run was, but I've gone up to around 13mi several times recently. Preparing for the downhill profile of the Tucson Marathon, I've been doing a lot of treadmill runs with a plank propped under the back of the treadmill. For my 17-mile long run this past Sunday, I substituted 1:50 on the treadmill-with-plank for the last 12 miles. (According to the treadmill display, I covered a lot more than 12 miles, but since the speed is much faster downhill I went by time rather than distance.) The machine cuts off automatically at 99 minutes, so I immediately restart it.

Tonight, unfortunately, I'll probably be confined indoors by weather, so I'll be putting in 11 miles on the treadmill. I probably won't use the plank tonight, but will add in some uphills for variety.

-----
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
Which is probably why I was registering 59.67mi as I rolled into T2.

I did a 2hr 15 min increasing interval workout on a treadmill last week. Normally, I would rather run on cut glass than get on a treadmill, but it was raining and cold outside.

I made sure I got the ones in front of the TV line so that it wouldn't bother me. I don't see how people can watch TV and stuff like that when they are suppose to be running. But it is super boring in general.

And I actually have more pain in my legs after running on a treadmill than if I run outside. It is good for speed work, even if it only goes up to 10 mph. That's what the incline is for.

Unless your in rehabilation, over the age of 70 or train in the Arctic or Antarctic Regions - there is no reason why you should be on a treadmill. Unless of course your a girly man, and afraid of a little cold weather. Oh no.....a hat may mess up your hair. Be tough train outside. Plus, on a treadmill the ground moves undernear you, so you are not really propelling yourself forward. A treadmill is great for a common gym-goer who wants an aerobic workout, NOT for a triathlete or REAL runner.

I think my longest is 6 miles...:) (Then again, my longest run ever has only been a marathon w/warm-up, cool-down). I've only run on them while rehabing or when I'm traveling.

BTW, I've actually done speedwork (a few 800 m repeats) on the treadmill. There are a few that can get down to 5 min pace. People at the club look at you though like you're insane.

I did most of a 6-month build on the treadmill at 8% grade when I was getting ready for Pike's Peak a couple of years back. Long runs, tempo, intervals, the whole marathon prep show - tilted up at 8%. I live where it's flat, and the dreadmill was a better alternative than running parking garages, which some folks around here do. I think my longest single treadmill run was 2:50 with grade ranging from 6-10%. It was hideous.

I do most of my running on a mill in a 10 x 20 workout room at the firestation. I have logged 400 miles on it this year so far.

The negatives is that its friggin boring and resets after 1h29 min.
I also do most of my biking on a trainer there...
If we get a call, the workout gets interrupted or cut short.
I have to hold back on effort so I am ready to work a fire.

The big positives are that I am on the clock while I train. ($ka-ching$)
I get more time for the family , no going for long runs or bike rides, - the only training I do off-duty is swimming.

Yes, I consider myself very lucky.

I needed to get 20 in, I had a tight schedule, it was hot and humid so I did it on a treadmill while watching fox news and mtv. As long as I have TV or music its not a problem. I often do 10-12 mile runs on a treadmill.

Ed,

You'd be much faster if you trained outside, it's a proven fact. The treadmill was invented back in 1875 for livestock purposes and animals. We then made it available for human couch pototos to exercise. Maybe this is why American distance runners cannot compete with Kenyian's. You don't see Kenyian's on a treadmill.

Okay, but what I do is wait until my wife gets home and go run then. Or go out running when they are all home or asleep early in the morning or late at night. I've went out running several times at 11PM and at 4AM, no one is out then, no cars, no people, clean air, just you and the stars - very peaceful and beats the treadmill hands down.

I've went out running several times at 11PM and at 4AM, no one is out then, no cars, no people, clean air, just you and the stars - very peaceful and beats the treadmill hands down.[/reply]

I just worked for Polar this weekend at the Chicago marathon expo and ran a 2:33:57 marathon on the treadmill. That was the longest distance and time I've ever spent on the treadmill. It went by fast compared to winter trainer hours. 6:45 is my longest for the trainer, countless 5+ hour rides in the winter.

HEY! That's completely uncalled for.

Sorry.... didn't mean to offend. I just want people to stop finding the easy way out, it's an American cultural thing. Nothing against Americans, I am one too. But we have a tendancy to be overweight, coach potatos and fast food junkies. Along those lines we also have step aerobics, Tai bow, The Bun Cruncher, Elipical machines, Treadmills, Stair Steppers, Water Aerobics, the Thigh Master, etc.

All equipment to get our lazy butts off the couch, which is great for the average Joe and Jane. But not for a competitive runner or triathlete looking to improve their performance. Leave these machines for the people looking to get fit or back into shape.

A friend of mine is a 2:20 marathoner who did a good chunk of his training for the 2004 Olympic Marathon Trials on a treadmill due to a crazy work schedule and crappy New England road conditions during the winter. It worked for him.

Same for me - I'm not a 2:20 marathoner, but a few long runs 14+ miles are better than 10 degrees below on icy roads in the dark during rush hour. I'd only do this when training for a spring marathon (e.g. Boston), otherwise any other cross training is better.

11 miles, 1:15 when I lived back east and it was snowing out.

I sweat so much I was afraid I might cause water damage to the machine...

Now that I'm in san diego, no excuse to not run outside.

I'm kind of stuck on the treadmill for now because of a knee problem I am trying to rehab. The treadmill seems to be much, much lower impact than the road. The longest I've gone so far is 10 miles. I'm sure that will increase in the coming months. It's not so bad- I make sure I have tunes in my ears and the gym always has 3 TVs going on for added entertainment. Plus, I feel better about paying money for a gym membership when I use it every once in awhile.

Which is good :D and also the treadmill does not get covered with snow and ice in the winter!

Another bonus!

Yeah, we get a LOT of snow in Cleveland. I avoid the sidewalks when they're icy or snowy. No need to injure myself by falling. I'm too good at that by overtraining!

Show me where in "physics" your propelling your body forward on a treadmill. If you actually propel forward, not lift your leg and set it down forward, but actually push off the surface with the same force you do when you run outdoors, you'd go off the front of the machine.

Treadmills, Stair Machines, Thighmasters, Bun Crunchers, Ab Cruchers, Elipitcal Machines, Spin Bikes, etc are all for wimpy individuals who can't do the real thing. Unless, of course your over 70 years old, in rehab, or just getting into fitness - then it's a good alternative.

Why are so many people so afraid to go outside and run? It's fun, either cold, rainy, snowy, hot, etc. I know everyone has an excuse, so what yours?

You do realize that even elite runners and professional marathon and olympic runners use treadmills, and that this has been increasing over the last few years, as a tool to improve increasing foot turnover or for other reasons---not to avoid or chicken out of running outside. Some of it does relate to time and family convenience but long gone are the days where it is now accepted to just trash treadmills as they have no use to even "Serious" runners.

In this thread, we have many here in this very thread (not me!) who run sub 3 hour to 2:45 marathons, who are sitting here explaining to you that they use treadmills, occasionally. Brian up there runs very fast marathons, I think, and he's no p&*%y.

Its not preferred. Its not that they do it every day for every run. Deena Kastor has used a treadmill. I read an article last year in Runners World discussing the growing use of treadmills by elite runners. Go over to Duncan Larkin's website and call him a baby for using a treadmill.

To lop everyone into a class of Fat Gym Cats who use one, who post here---again, I'm no elite anything---but there are those here who use treadmills and its just insane to say they are babies for using a treadmill.

I started this thread, and I think I've run a treadmill TWICE in 2 years. I was just curious how long someone or how far they've run on one, not whether treadmills are for babies or not.

Your same argument could be made for using a bike trainer. Let's just accept the fact that people are going to use artificial training devices.

10.6 miles, 1:39. Ran that on January 7, 2005. Haven't run that long on a T-Mill since.

I can manage 3-5, but after that, I start thinking of creative ways to dismount, like trying to hurdle the dashboard.

Haven't tried yet. Afraid of the long drop.

OK, you pushed my button (doesn't take much). I too live in Chicago and for the last 15 years do most of my weekday Nov-Mar running on a treadmill. I don't like it but neither do I like running in the cold, ice and snow. I'll go out on a limb here and will gladly compare my running times with your "pussy" times. I did not see any results for J. Knight in this year's Chicago marathon or Accenture triathlon, so you might just be a poser.

Longest run on the TM = 13.

Most mileage for a year on a TM = 850.

I hate running at the track and ended up doing all my speedwork on the treadmill this year, plus a lot of my shorter runs. The long runs get pretty tough, and I only managed a few 13 milers before I had to do those outside. But there is nothing quite no nice as watching a football game or good movie to make the time fly by fast!

Hah! No. However, funnily enough, I did crash a treadmill today at lunch. Dropped my sweat towel (didn't see it drop), and before I knew it that sucker stopped COLD.

Turns out the towel got sucked into the belt. This was a brand-new Star-Trac treadmill, and I guess it has a "Peril Sensor" or something, because the motor flicked itself off as soon as it sensed resistance (e.g., this could be a Kenyan getting sucked under - better stop).

I stepped off, pulled the towel back out (it'd been ground through in about 10 seconds), and restarted running.

I think at least 10 people saw it. Gonna' be hard to get away from that one.

Well how about a $500 bet that my treadmill running self beats your outdoor running self at any race you want HIM distance or under. Or better yet, lets make it best of three with $500 per race and after three races the loser has to kick in an extra $1000 for being the biggest pussy on ST! I guess the real question is are you brave enough to back up your smack talking with your racing.

I'm so bold that I'll even propse another wager, of course that is if you think you can handle it, another $500 per race that the slower runner has to pay the faster runner.

You going to back up your smack talk Mr. I'll run at 4am outside?

I'm enjoying the wagering. hopefully I will win one soon. I did bet a 8 handicapper that if he spotted me 3 strokes per hole, I'd bet him $200 per hole in golf. Of course I have not touched a club in about 8 years. So I think I can take him.

Here's one way of looking at it:

You can think of the earth a large tredmill which rotates or spins at about 1000 mph. If you run at 10 miles per hour in the opposite direction of the rotation you could say that you are actually going backwards at 990 mph. It is important to remember that motion is all relative and you need reference points to define motion.
