Like Obama before me, I feel I have to cut this one off at the pass, before it gets taken out of all context, and spun into a fabrication of monumental proportions...
During the Tribabes weekend here, we were swimming at the local plunge, and I put on my red zoomers for 4 50's.. There was a comment from the cheap seats, why was I wearing fins??..Zoomers are not fins!!!! If I had fins on, then I would be beating up Phelps and the rest of the national team, easily..Zoomers sink, they have about an inch of fin surface, and unless you are doing an all out tt, they only help marginally with your speed in workout sets. They actually raise your HR quite a bit, because you have to kick more to keep your feet from sinking. Fins have about 12 to 15 inches of kicking surface, and many of them float. I used them for exactly 4 X 50's free, but like the Reverand Wright, this issue will just not die. I see it on the blogesphere already, and it's a matter of time before it hits CNN. I fear my speech to tell the truth will fall on deaf ears, and the spin machine of the Womens will bury me with this issue. I can only hope that no matter what the attacks, like Obama, my poll numbers will continue to rise...
And as to the other most important issue, the fencing in the modern pentathlon. The discussion started with an innocent topic of Sheila T. and her attempt to go to her 3rd olympics in 3 different sports. I said she would dominate the swim/run, no arguement there, and I conceded that there was a tiny bit the rider of a horse has to do(I still think the horse you get matters more than the rider)..Learning to shoot is an easly learned skill by someone so athletic, but the fencing is a whole different issue. Sheila has spent her whole life in endurance sports, and fencing is one of the most fast twitch sports I have ever seen. You cannot teach a red muscle fiber to be white, you can coax it a bit, but white beats red every time in fencing..These womens have been watching too many Arrol Flynn pirate movies(Ok, maybe it is Johnny Depp movies, I'm dating myself)..FENCING IS NOT SWASHBUCKELING!!!!!!!!!
