Again, is it possible to use the spreadsheet without a google email address?

Yes. You need to do two things:

1. Give Dev a valid email address, not necessarily from gmail.com.

2. Create a 'Google Docs' account using that same (full) email address plus a password.

You'll be prompted to create the Google Docs account the first time you try to access the spreadsheet.
