Another shot at the Hour

Didn't see a post about this, sorry if I missed it. Really enjoyed watching the last two attempts. I think he's got a good chance of breaking the record. Good for Canyon as well, can't stop looking at that bike.

Very clean looking bike! I wonder if this will become more of a target for some of the top riders. I imagine guys like Wiggins or Martin could easily put down a WR if they so desired.

They are a few good riders that may take the record, we will have to see in 2015 which record will be set.....can't wait.

Has there been any discussion about how much the bike affects the record? I mean these are all "superbikes" made specifically for this attempt, and I guess all bigger brands will use similar builds for the attempt. But we spend a lot of time talking about small differences when it comes to triathlons. An hour gives plenty of time to let small differences get pretty significant.

And throw Jack Bobridge into the mix...his attempt is at the end of January, in Australia.

I think it depends on what you actually consider the 'record.' The new bred of bikes definitely provide a significant advantage, at least 1km, over the pre-UCI rule change ones. However that advantage doesn't stand when comparing the new bikes to the Obree/Boardman record bikes which were used during the absolute best, albeit UCI unrecognized, hour attempts. In terms of equipment I would guess Boardman's 56+km setup with the superman bars gives up little if anything to the modern superbikes. What we need is Specialized to test the superman position in the windtunnel. As for the differences between bikes in the modern attempts I would bet any differences in frame aerodynamics are lost in the noise of rider fit/ability to maintain their ideal position for 1 hour.

And Wiggo talking mid-year. That's the one that will leave a mark.

I would be a lot more impressed if these riders had the cojones to attempt it Merckx style.

Hurts the same, for just as long, either way.

Seems like progressively better guys are taking their shots at the record before Wiggo/Sparticus/Martin put their attempts in.

Actually, it's a lot harder to hold a good aero position on drop bars, and so it hurts worse.

Everyone is trying to get their attempts in before Wiggo because they know after him they won't have a chance at holding the record.

Been there, done that, back about 20 y ago (before using the Superman for the TT at master nationals that year). There's also a paper in (IIRC) the European Journal of Applied Physiology that used field testing to compare the Superman, Obree Mk. 1, and standard aero positions. Bottom line is that the 1st two can be significantly faster, at least at/near zero deg of yaw.

And he's already broken a boardman record people thought might have been out of reach because of position rule changes: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/...ssion_track_cycling_–_Men%27s_individual_pursuit
