Just wanted to add that I raced a 1x11 setup at a very hilly cat 3 circuit race this weekend and it was great.

Specialized venge
50t surly 3/32 chainring
11-32 ultegra rear cassette
sram 11 speed chain
sram cx1 rdr
paraffin bath chain lube job

stealthy silent
never felt like it was going to drop
as smooth as sram shifting ever is

I led out my teammate for 2nd. I was held on for 5th. NP 348. Average speed 24.2mph

I'm just playing around for now, but might leave it like this if it stays so good.

The setup got a lot of attention. Everyone wanted to talk about it.

Wolftooth has 130BCD 52t rings in stock.

I have a few of these and am a big fan on my mtb/cx. Just put one on my "backup" road bike/commuter. Downtube 10 speed Shimano shifter with a 42t ring in front and 12-27 in back. This works great for riding around town and rolling hills, but for extended climbs, I would prefer an 11-32. For my w/kg and local climbs, I think 46/11-32 would be perfect for my road bike and maybe a 50t for the tri bike and use different cassettes depending on which race I do.

those semi-enclosed cyclocross singles: Would they act as a chain guard, making riding in jeans less of a hassle? Thinking in terms of a commuter here.

Yes. On my wife's commuter. It has a FD but I put an outer guard on it.

I had a 25km TT champs race this weekend and lost the masters overall by 3 seconds. During the ride I dropped my chain 3x to the outside during downshifts from 14->13 and 12->11. Cost me ~45-60seconds over 3 full stops to put the chain back on. The third one was my fault 100% as I shouldn't have shifted anymore after dropping the chain 2x. Roads in rural Canterbury Nz are quite rough with chip-seal.

I'll be in search of a solution to prevent chain drop for 25km club nationals in 3 weeks.
  • Homemade chain keeper coming up from BB
  • Wolftooth dropstop chainring
  • Shorten chain to run higher tensions in 11-15t rear cassette range.
  • Check the Di2 setting to see if the rear derailleur can shift slower
  • Learn to slow pedal EZ before shifts to ensure chain stays on.

For info: Running a 52T sram chainring (my quarq crank), 11spd 1170 sram chain, 11-23 rear sram cassette, 11spd di2, no front derailleur or FD hanger. Installed chain line is straight on the ~13t for rear cassette from memory.
