Smiths Sports Shoes are now importing Hokas into NZ. I had calf issues when I started running and increasing cadence, along with building up really slowly and running almost every day fixed them for me. The main thing though was increasing cadence, I'm sure. Not sure whether it's nationwide but I know Smiths in Tauranga had some in

Hokas are like running on treadmill but outside. That is how I would describe it.

Also they are slightly heavier, but that is to be expected with the extra sole and support

Sorry, no, haven't used them. Increasing cadence fixed my calf issues, I just have a friend who got some Hokas from Smiths.
