Redneck Aerodynamics
Driving home today from a weekend at the lake, I saw a cyclist traveling the opposite direction. It was an unlikely area for cyclists as residents of this area were more likely to choose a hobby such as cooking crystal meth over a sport such as cycling or triathlon.

However like any good triathlete, when I see a fellow cyclist I am inclined to slow down and check out his ride. As his speck on the horizon came into view, this is what I saw...

Not being exactly sure what I had witnessed, I turned around to get a better glimpse. Perhaps I could learn from this creative genius. Traveling slower the second time around, I came to understand the once-in-a-lifetime goodness of what I was witnessing... Redneck Aerodynamics.

He is only about an hour from John Cobb, however I am not sure how the cardboard will stand up in the wind tunnel. Notice however that he does have a Giro helmet.

it's not about being really good at one sport, it's about being just a little better than average in three. oh, and it's about gadgets. buying lots and lots of expensive gadgets.

He actually had some kind of rigid sparkly material that he put between his spokes for a disk effect. You can sort of see it on his front wheel. He was running a partial disk in front, and full disk in the rear.

It looks like some kind of ultra-thin aluminum alloy.

Ok, who would win in a fight? Or a time trial?

A) This guy, with the custom-engineered duct tape & cardboard

or

B) That girl from last week with the aero helmet, custom bike w/ DI2 and Lightweight wheels?

I was not joking Hebert, that was a serious comment. That is why I did not put a smiley on my comment. I have the hunch that he is a slowtwitcher.

Maybe I am wrong but it seems to me that he is putting into practice a lot of stuff that is discussed here. I doubt he is going to gain any speed, but as someone else said, at least he is trying.

Darn it.

That was actually me conducting a highly scientific, empiracle, University level investigation into the best aero helmet design- soon to be published....

Actually, in all seriousness- This guy is obviously very insightful and a careful man. He probably saw this:

I actually thought the same thing. Those aren't just arbitrary decorations, but they seem to serve a purpose for him (whether they work or not). He was working pretty hard also, far harder than his strung-out, obese neighbors (with 4 unfenced dogs in every yard who like to chase runners).

Regardless, still very humorous particularly when unexpected.

In the third picture you posted (the one from the behind the rider), it looks like his front wheel is a custom 3 or 5 spoke wheel made from what I could only guess is duct-tape! If so, this guy is the "Red Green" of Triathlon...Genius

Did you happen to see what it actually was?

where he we discussed adding airplane tails to the back of the bike, or carrots, or tables on top of aero helmets or using duct tape to make an h3 out of a spoked wheel?

This guy is either nutters or a performance artist.

what is in his mouth? A Kazoo? (I know this could spark a lot of "that's what she said"-esque comments, and I likely did that intentionally because they're always funny)

So that is who stole my bike. I was unhappy with the different color tape on my aero bars and I went up to the local Home Depot to get that corrected and when I came out it was gone. He even made off with my gloves. Where was this picture taken?

He's both, and very good at each, I'd say.
