Fit4bike motion capture system
Any one have experience with the Spanish 3D motion capture system from fit4bike? It really looks quit interesting since it works with 4 cameras and you can measure front, both sides, back, top all without a rotating platform or anything.

The skeleton would be maybe nicer if would be an actual rider picture but overall the system looks nice and easy. Report output looks a bit retul-ish but nothimg wrong with that and completely brand independed.

It seems new so was wondering if there were any users with some feedback?

Thanks,

Jeroen

we have at that Lab.
there are a lot of "issues"
longer learning cure than Retul - not as user friendly

no reflective surfaces
must tape and cover up bike parts/ trainer parts and anything that causes camera/system to mis read the actual reflective dots on rider

need lots of clear space to perform - best to have empty rooms of more than 12 x 12

pros - capture both sides at once

I use Retul bike capture part of Retul. Fit4Bike's bike capture is not to my liking.

Actually I got the system a few months ago and it works perfectly, well yes you need some space to make it work, but as a bike fitter I really enjoy a big studio where I can watch the biker from a good distance (this makes it much easier). And yes all the reflections can affect the 3D motion campture but what can you spect in a system that is actually more acurate than Retul, covering the reflective parts is not much of an "issue".

As a bike fitter I highly recomend the system, the software runs incredible, all the data it throws to you is acurate and actually more than you need; and as a sugestion, if you are intrested in buying it, its better if you go through the installation course, it is really easy but helps you to undestand all the system (that, now that I think of, its really friendly aswell).

When ever you want I can send you pictures and videos of fittings Ive been making and you can see for yourself how it works.

PS. Actually my clients love the skeleton graphic!

Thanks, If you could send em some pics and/or a video that would be assume. My dedicated space is 4.25 x 5.50 meters. I think that must be enough.
Can you send the pics and/or video to hilversum@tri-run.com

Much appreciated.

best if that is open space---> no shelves, no desks and no mirrors.
otherwise reflections may occur
need to have at least 2.5 meters high

Hello tri-run, we also use the Fit4Bike system. And we have very very good experience with the system. We were looking for an independent and objektiv system. And thats really what it is. I think the mentioned "issues" could be prevented in the right setting and by using the installation service. Pedro from fit4bike visited our company in Germany to install everything and to show us the complete workflow. That was perfekt and is of course necessary to get into such a complex and scientific tool. Of course sometimes things do not work like you expected - but thats the case with all kind of complex topics. The service of the guys from fit4bike and stt is always very fast and absolut professional. Up to now they solved every "issue" within one day. All of our team members got use to the workflow very fast. The system provides a very good routine to identify wrong reflecting parts by doing a snapshot at the beginning. So you immediately can hide them and start the capture. This takes me no minute! Maybe there was some misunderstanding or a problem in communication that caused the problems mentioned by hideano. For us the system was one of the best investments. The avatar and the very good report helps us a lot to transfer/visualizes the complex biomechanics of cycling to our costumers. Best regards Sebastian Mühlenhoff from www.iq-athletik.de / Germany

"We were looking for an independent and objektiv system. And thats really what it is."

i have asked the folks at fit4bike how their system works. i haven't gotten an answer back yet. perhaps you can help. specifically, it seems to me that there are 2 parts to a bike fit:

1. establish fit coordinates for the rider. what i mean is, the saddle is so high, so far back from the bb, the handlebars are placed here in space, this is how you ride your bike.

2. prescription: this could mean that these are the new parts you need to set up your existing bike to match these fit coordinates; or it could mean that your position is a perfect match for a specialized venge, size 56cm, 110mm stem, -6° pitch, 15mm of headset dust cover + spacers on a handlebar with a 70mm reach (or you're a trek H2 geometry, or a cannondale supersix, etc.).

to me, that's a bike fit (excluding pedal/shoe interface issues). what i'd like to know is:

1. does this system do that? does the tooling do that?

2. is there a "system" or "protocol" behind the tooling? or is it just the tooling? (which would be fine, then others would build a protocol for the tool).

3. is there something else this system does beyond my 2 points above?

can you help answer these questions?

First of all, we would like to specify that we are talking about our two main system, the 3D Motion Capture and the Biometric Adjustment System (BAS).

3D Motion Capture
The 3DMC is a motion capture system measures cyclist join angles, rotations… as well as the recommended bicycle setup (road, tt or mtb) and cleat position. The cleat capture feature is a unique one due to its accuracy (0,2mm) and because it captures the cleat positioning regarding to the foot, meaning we can replicate clear position no matter shoe model.

BA System
The BA System brings a revolution to the bike fit market. It offers several innovations, special features and winning edges that make it a unique product in the market. Some of its functions are totally innovative, find here a detailed explanation how it works, why it stands out from the rest of the systems and top level teams trust it, like Movistar Team.

The system is assembled on rider’s own bike, allowing real replication of rider´s cycling condition, such as the Q factor.

A further and unique benefit of the BA System is that it automatically determines the optimum components (stem, seatpost and handlebar) required to get the desired final position in relation to the frame geometry.
The BA system also offers different bike set up options to get the desired position. For example, during a bike fit session, the system determines that the desired position can be reached in the existing frame using a 2cm spacer and a 100mm + 6º stem, or a 1cm spacer and a 105mm +10º stem or no spacer and a 110mm + 17º pitch. The software will report a chart with the different bike configurations. That chart includes a list with all possible bike configurations listed by margin of error. Ranking the first one as the most accurate final position, and followed by the other options. In fact the software also indicates the margin of error detected for each bike configuration.

The BA System is the only one in the market providing real and authentic bike measurements since it is equipped with a database including all the existing frames, saddles, hoods and pedals in the market. Therefore, the BA System does millimetrically determine where all the components are exactly located in relation to the frame, the saddle BRP (Saddle Biomechanical Reference Point), the hood BRP and the pedal base height in relation to the pedal axle. According to this:

The resulting measuring data is a fully manually measurable absolute value that can be used as a reference, regardless the used components, helping the rider or fitter to get their final position any time they need it.

Thanks to its large database, the BA System replicates bike configurations and components regardless the existing frame it is installed on, which becomes key element on bikes, saddles or any component prepurchase service.

Let us use an extreme case as an example: if the obtained final position was imposible to replicate with the existing components in the market (such as a too small frame with a radical handlebar elevation and an extremely backwarded saddle) the BA System will report that this position is not posible to reach because of a short stack and reach, however the system will also report which are ideal required components in order to be as close as possible to that position, margins of error included. In this case where a change of frame is required, the BA System database will provide the option of selecting any frame existing in the market in any size and will configure the best bike set up in accordance to the desired position obtained.

The system allows you to choose any existing frame in the market, and taking the desired final position as a reference, the software displays the necessary components to achieve it. So it is not only a great bike fit tool, but also an excellent prepurchase service tool. Other advantages:

Saddle test. The saddle is one of the key components on bike fits and it is also intimately bound up with the cyclist’s riding feelings. This is why saddles must be tested in order to know which is the most suitable one. They should be tested within a correct general positioning, with the appropiate high and backpositioning. The BA System allows an effective and quick saddle test thanks to its mech, which facilitates saddle replacement and automatically adjusts saddle height and setback anytime the new saddle model is entered in the software.

Portable, the whole system comes with a suitcase for easier and more convenient transportation

Both systems are protocol independent, meaning the can be use with different bike fitting protocols. At Fit4bike the protocol remains on the education side. In our understanding the customization criteria is up to the bike fitter himself, up to his knowledge. No matching has yet arrived to that customization quality, so bike fitter can’t be replaced with a machine. Let’s admit also that good bike fitters take advantage of different protocols by picking up the best of each one depending on the case, indeed Fit4bike’s protocol has a lot from other’s, we haven’t invented the bike fitting ;)

We hope this answer has clarified any possible doubts from our systems.

Regards
