You can buy them from SRM for around 400, in case you didn't know.

Possibly.
In stepping down from 175mm. I have a set of varicranks, haven't experimented with 170, only 172.5. I'm heading out of town for a few days, won't be able to try it out until the weekend. They might work out well, I'll let you know.
