School me on podcasts. My commute is going from about 12 minutes to an hour and I'd like to use that time for some interesting and/or entertaining podcasts rather than more dumbass sports talk radio or NPR (which I like, but I can get that content elsewhere).

I know about Serial and that'll be at the top of the list. Any other topics, shows, hosts you'd recommend? Do you just download them to your phone, is there a specific app you use for yours?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks, I'd queued up Rogan and Carlin already.

So how does it work, you subscribe to a podcast and on your subscription page you'll see the latest for each podcast, which you can then stream (or do you have to download)? What happens with old episodes, i.e. a podcast you want to listen to from the beginning like Serial, do you download them to the phone and if so is there a fee?

Here are a few of my favorites:
  • Beautiful/Anonymous
  • On Being with Krista Tippett (the raw, unedited conversations are interesting)
  • RadioLab
  • Revisionist History with Malcolm Gladwell
  • TED Radio Hour and TED Talks Daily
  • The Moth
  • You Made It Weird with Pete Holmes
  • StoryCorps

There are others I enjoy that are more tuned to my specific interests (philosophy, progressive theology, (a)theistic-theism, literature, meditation), but the ones above are shows that reach to the human spirit, stories, or humor and hold more universal appeal.

I like Hardcore History and Waking Up with Sam Harris. The latter has interesting discussions but I find Sam Harris a bit hard to take except in small doses.

Embedded has a series this season on Trump past business dealings. Spoiler: He's an asshole.

Planet Money. Not too long, very clear, and entertaining explanations on money/economics

Hidden Brain

Agree with others on Hardcore history. They are very long though. I've been slowly making my way through WWI.

I usually download my podcast to a small Sansa MP3 player. So when I am working or working out it is light, out of the way and they are easy to fast forward through commercials. If I am in the car I find the podcast and play it on the phone.

Ben Shapiro Fastest growing conservative podcast. He seems more balanced than the rest. Ben is no fan of Trump but will acknowledge when he does something right. Some podcast I will increase the speed of play. Like for example Leo Laporte (The Tech guy) He has good stuff but takes along time to get to a point so I up the speed of play. You will never have to do this with Shapiro's.

Clark Howard- He can be a little repetitive, But when you are tired of hearing so much neg. stuff he will brighten your day with niceness.

http://superfangiovanni.com/ Old loveline episodes with Adam Carolla and Dr Drew. I think Adam was much funnier in the 80's and 90's than the constant complainer he is now. There is another realization I got from listening to the show. All the young kids that called into the show back then are now older adults. This explains why and where our society is going now - not good.

  1. Very Bad Wizards. My favorite. Tamler Sommers and David Pizarro (professors at U of Houston and Cornell) discuss issues of ethics, cognitive psychology, etc., with lots of politically incorrect humor and anal jokes.
  2. Rogan -- Already been mentioned, but I find it hit and miss. It really depends on the guest.
  3. NPR replays from This American Life, Radiolab, Snap Judgment, Freakonomics.
  4. Secular Buddhism, 10% Happier, OneMind, if you're into mindfulness.
  5. The Ancient World and Religions of the Ancient Mediterranean, if you're into ancient religion from an historical perspective.
  6. Sam Harris' Waking Up -- Also depends on the guest, and I get that he's not everyone's cup of tea.

Going to check those out, with the exception of Rogan. I just can't take him, and much like Sam Harris I pretty much agree with their perspectives on many things.

Maybe you already catch it on NPR but I like Marketplace. If I don't get it same day during the commute home I listen to it on headphones at lunch the next day.

Exchanges is sometimes good as well. It's a Goldman Sachs podcast that interviews various leaders within the firm. Not every episode is great but there's some decent content in there.

5. Revisionist History with Malcom Gladwell
6. Stuff you should know
7 stuff to blow your mind

For politics, Ben Shapiro is pretty solid. He talks a mile a minute so you cover a lot of content in a short period of time. Sam Harris is usually excellent, ranges from politics to tech issues like AI, neuroscience, philosophy, meditation, etc. Rogan, Carolla, and Mark Maron are all very good as well.

Serial is decent, she doesn't go far enough or in depth enough with a lot of it, but it is mildly entertaining.

A spin off of Serial is "Undisclosed". It started from the Adnan Syaed case that Serial examined only went much further into depth and is done by the lawyers that are trying to get him out. They proceeded to take on other cases and try to get people out. However, they unfortunately quickly changed from information seeking to political motive driven. They got a new cast of characters and examined the Freddie Gray case, I only made it through half an episode of those morons before I had to give it up. If they are back to the original crew it may be back to alright.

My favorite is the Around the NFL podcast. Dudes are downright hilarious and have great chemistry, lots of laughs and a bit of football mixed in.

The Forward can be good. It depends on the guest. Armstrong too quickly starts talking about himself sometimes. He had the Paul Mitchel guy once and it was very interesting.

The Art of Manliness can also be good. The name is cheesy, but the topics can be intriguing

The Memory Palace - Short (10 minutes or so) vignettes about little-known--or little-known aspects of well-known--people and events in history, told with a focus on how the people in the story might've felt or what they might've thought. The host is Nate DiMeo, whose voice I love. Don't start with any episodes labeled "Met residency." Nate is artist-in-residence at the Met, and those episodes are meant to be experienced in the gallery in front of a particular picture. I prefer his regular episodes.

S-town - Faulkner-esque. From the makers of Serial, and fabulous.

Lots of good suggestions on this thread.

The only one I would add is Greg Proops' podcast, "the Smartest man in the World". Very very left leaning, but very entertaining.

Rogan
Carolla
Carolla & Dr Drew
This American Life

Oh and The fighter and the kid

I've listened to that, and I've listened to The Dollop. The Dollop is hands down funnier.

Although alt-right types won't enjoy some of its humour, I suppose.
