WTF did the OKC Thunder plane hit?

There was of a whole plane full of very fortunate souls on that flight. It will be interesting to hear the stories from the pilots and the others on board. It will also be interesting to hear what the experts determine they hit. That's if they can release the info--like maybe it was something classified. It was at 30,000 ft.

Interesting. I didn't realize that birds could fly that high. Google confirms a common crane can reach 33K ft. And it was it night. Weird.

A goose or vulture. Some fly higher than that and even something small and light can do a ton of damage when its hit at a few hundred mph

Thanks for that correction. The MSN article mistakenly said that it was at 30,000 ft--I know it had just came out. It makes more sense that they were on descent. Still a hell of a lot of damage from a bird strike. I don't think I've ever seen anything like it. And I've seen pics of bird strikes with lots of blood, but nothing that I could see on this one.

Large birds can do an incredible amount of damage to an aircraft. Once hit a turkey vulture in a B-1 during low level training doing about 550 knots; the vulture punched a hole in the jet and took out some hydraulic lines. The aircraft was down for months getting fixed. There was a T-38 pilot who was killed when a bird came through the canopy of his jet on a low level training mission.
