Dental opinion-implant options
So I really am struggling with forking over almost 5000$ for a single implant for a tooth-it is up front(canine on the lower jaw). I had a consult with both the oral surgeon and already had a quote for the cap portion from the dentist. And after what little insurance pays, I will have to fork out about 5000$ over a 4-6 month period.
I am sure folks here have had implants but I would like to hear from the others who went the bridge or partial route to save money. If this was my only concern, I would do it in a heartbeat. I probably need another crown soon on a different tooth, maybe a root canal on yet another which would demolish my HCSA.
So-what option did you chose and are you glad you took that route?

I have two implants, the first in 99 and the second a couple of years ago. They have these implants down. They are quick and easy these days. My wife is going to get a bridge done soon as an implant isn't an option and it's still expensive.

How does a bridge compare in strength of an implant.

I had a failed root canal in a molar

Rather than try for third time for RC i opted for implant

3 visits; tooth out, mold then install

Took 4 months. Cost about 5-700 dollars

No probs so far

If i had to pay uk / us prices i would have gone crown or bridge i think

You are correct. It is not cheap. It is the best way to restore a single missing tooth ( specially in that area ) a fixed bridge probably the second best way to go. Sometimes the bridge can make more sense if the teeth on either side of the missing tooth are not in great shape... large older fillings, possible candidates for a crown on their own. A partial would be a lot of hardware in your mouth to replace one tooth and would usually be better suited to multiple missing teeth particularly if you y have back missing teeth with nothing behind them for a bridge.

A flipper ( transitional partial ) is relatively inexpensive and often used for esthetics while implant work is being done. ( it's just an acrylic retainer with a single replacement tooth ) I've had people use those for an extended period of time because of finances. That may be an option to hold you over while you get the other work done then go back to that area and have it restored. Maybe talk to your dentist about it.

I had to get three teeth extracted in July and I'm waiting until January (when my better dental insurance kicks in) to get two implants. Haven't seen the estimate, but if I had it done right now, I'd be on the hook for all of it. For two crowns under my basic dental insurance it was going to be $3K. The surgeon would have been about the same. All at Vanderbilt Med.

All of mine were molars (the two in the top back on the right and #2 on the top on the left), so it makes eating stuff like steak pretty hard to do. Thankfully the three extractions only cost me less than $200 (and my months long sinus issues are no more!) and they don't want to replace the last tooth since I still have wisdom teeth and it would be a tight fit.

I had an upper molar done. One that you could see when you smile. I'm glad I did it but it took a long time. Once they put the post in, I waited 6 months for the bones to mold around the post. Its like an original tooth once its done and I'm super happy with it. I think total cost was about $4k in Seattle which isn't a cheap town. To your point, insurance doesn't cover much, but I made sure to do it during the end of one year and the beginning of the next so I could get more HSA benefits.

That would be the only way I could pull it off....implant now, then wait a year with a flipper and make sure I stay healthy in the mean time. I go to the dentist Monday and I will try to finalize the plan. It makes me nauseous at the cost of this. I think I would be so damn bitter at spending this kind of money on a tooth. A new roof for the house would not be much more.

Thanks for the opinions!!

If you are replacing a canine tooth, I would be leary of a bridge. For most people, the canine tooth takes a lot of force, and the small tooth in front of it is not as strong as the canine. This could lead to the tooth breaking off. You could use two teeth in front and one behind as anchors, but then it is getting expensive. Also, being small, the teeth in front of the canine are more likely to have nerve problems after being reduced for the bridge. This could mean root canals and increased risk of breakage of these teeth/bridge.
I know that total cost is an issue for you, but you can certainly put the implant in and leave it there indefinitely until you want to put a tooth on it.
A denture is always an option, though for many, not as comfortable as the other options.

I'm going through the implant process now.
Upper Central Incisor, so no hiding it.
I'm paying a little more, I spoke to a couple of providers, but went with my gut, which was the more expensive dude.
Plan was extraction & implant insertion in 1 day, but extraction left too big a socket, so I've had to wait for that to heal.
Getting the implant done next week.
Wait for that to heal, get the crown on early next year.
I've had the flipper for ~3 months now.
I have a bit of a gap where my gum receded, I'm pretty conscious of not smiling too big.
I find the flipper annoying and it will come loose when I eat sometimes.
I usually take it out to eat if I'm not around people.
All up I will have done about 6-7 months with a flipper by the end of this.
That's about 6 months too long for my liking.

Long process I hear. The oral surgeon said that I had good bone for the implant but they always reinforce with a graft anyway-I could get the implant/extraction in one day, then wait for the cap. Trying not to pay for an annoying flipper if I go the implant route...I don't have to look at my smile so I hope clients get over the snaggeled tooth look for a few months. Just trying to limits the money bleeding but also get a good long term result. Looks like I need to ask for a payment plan for the implant. I am taking everyones opinion and seriously considering the impact.......still sick to my stomach!

Where are you located? Whatever you do make sure you have it done by a specialist, a Periodontist not a dentist doing this to make extra money.

Really? My dentist did all of it. I didn't need an oral surgeon and I did have a difficult situation with my molar because half of it broke off (while eating a pretzel)

That's what I'm doing. I figure my crew has good experience - they also take care of the Preds hockey team.

I had two; extraction and graft by one. Mold, prosthetic and fit by a second.

My extraction took 75 minutes and was very physical.

They used a mallet to chip mine away. Tears were running down my cheek. When finished, dentist said I should have been under.
