I'm seeing it confirmed on multiple outlets... more depressing news.

I saw him in concert several times over the last 15-20 years. He and the Heartbreakers easily put on some of the best shows of my time.

I'm seeing "pulled from" and "put on" life support, all linking to the same TMZ report

Either way, that's usually not a trip you come back from

The ride home is gonna suck, but I'm sure XPN's playlist will be of the highest quality

Wow. That really, really sucks.
Spent a good portion of my 20's listening to his work.

Long Chile was a silly place.

I think I heard it announced on just about every rock station on SiruisXM during my drive home this afternoon.

Seriously bummed, but he left us a ton of great music to carry on.

AP is saying rumors of his demise are premature. Somebody somewhere said the LAPD confirmed his death and then the news world ran with it, but now the LAPD is denying that it confirmed anything. Coroner's office hasn't received word of his death. Fire was dispatched to the block in Malibu on which Petty lives, but they're not saying anything...

The above information will all be obsolete in about five minutes, of course...

I just read that LAPD has apologized for saying he has died, because he hasn't died. The cardiac arrest is supposedly true, and he has a Do Not Resuscitate order so no life support. Unlikely to survive the rest of the day.

This sucks, saw him in '89 and he put on a great live show. Someone who always looked like he truly enjoyed what he was doing.

Everyone on here mentioning his earlier stuff. To me, he got better with age, really became a virtuoso, a real legend.

Saw him a couple years ago with jackson Browne and meant to see him this year. He gave a fantastic show.

Always been one of my favorites. Old stuff, new stuff and everything in between.

I'm beginning to think that we are much more fucked than I thought.

Yup, confirmed by his spokesperson.

Yesterday sucked all around from a new standpoint - need a reboot for today.

I never saw him live, but the Running Down a Dream video came out when I was a young kid. It enraptured me, giving me a first sense that music could be pleasurable, cool, and intriguing since I had no idea what was happening in the video but couldn't help but keep being drawn to the song. The world is a better place for his contribution.
