Meanwhile in Canada...New citizenship oath asks Canadians to do what they cannot do
Quote | Reply
http://nationalpost.com/news/politics/new-citizenship-oath-to-include-reference-to-treaties-with-indigenous-peoples. New citizenship oath asks Canadians to "observe the laws of Canada including treaties with its indigenous people. Treaties are arrangements between groups of people gov't to gov't. I don't believe I have ever had the option of not observing a treaty. But whatever.

So they are pointlessly putting meaningless language into the citizenship oaths so that SJWs will feel better about themselves.

Hey, did you hear that soon we'll be able to canoe drunk and not lose our drivers licences?

Probably the most Canadiast law ever.

Why don't they just say "Native Canadians" like we say "Native Americans"? Or is it that "indigenous people" in Canada don't want to be called "Canadian" either? There's a recipe for trouble down the road, I think.

Well first they were Indians. Then that was an insult. Then they were Native Canadians. Then that was an insult. Now they are Indigenous people. Until that becomes an insult...

Actually, I thought they were called First Nations People now. So maybe that became insulting too.

Well why couldn't they be called Native Americans? They are after all on North America.

Down the road? The trouble is already bubbling to the surface. Our issues with natives are similar to your country's racial problems.

Our "truth and reconciliation" program (basically the acceptance that natives were brutalized during the settlement of this country and now we owe them everything) is similar to BLM. In my neck of the woods, it's gone so far as our Mayor referring to anyone white or of European heritage as "settlers". You could be 4th generation Canadian and this moonbeam refers to you as some kind of transient parasite. Fuck her.

What trouble? We’ll just start using whatever new name they have until it becomes an insult to them.

Lather rinse repeat.

I've never heard the term "Native Canadian".

I remember it going from 'Indian' (which is truly insulting to actual Indians, you know, from India), to Indigenous, to First Nations, which I believe we are still calling them. Although in BC we just call them 'Natives' because that's what they call themselves and each other, although it is considered a bit crude for some reason.

Didn't post-apartheid South Africa have "truth and reconciliation" commissions? Fortunately, Nelson Mandela saw what could have developed and led the push for reconciliation over "truth" (meaning, bloody payback).

Lots of guilt-filled whites in Canada it seems (plenty down here, too). I kind of roll my eyes at their earnest attempts at "making things right." I know that I really don't care, because no one alive today did the wrongs that so many white folks are queuing up to help make right, I guess by trying to put the genie back in the bottle? That ain't happening anytime soon, near as I can tell.

The past is a canceled check. Better everyone treats everyone as equal nowadays than go down that reparations-type path. In other words, don't give an inch because some folks will want to take a mile. ;-)

We have some major issues with racial relations with Natives here in Minnesota. The major contention is based on some treaties written 150 years ago letting them have access to fish and game with out regard to state or federal law. That was fine when they were still netting from canoes and hunting with muskets, now it is about abusing their "rights" to fish and game.

While I was going to school in South Dakota that was a whole different set of issues with helping Natives out of the hell holes we sent them to. But they are too "proud" to take anything from white man, they will however knock you ass out if you refuse to bum them a smoke.

Just as long as you wear your life jacket. What gets me about the whole Native issue is it feels like a band aid that is being ripped off slow motion forever and doesn't seem to benefit anyone that much. In our area we have a group called the Caldwell band. They were promised land for fighting the Americans in the 1812 war but never got it. There are 300 of these people left. Recently the gov't concluded a 100 million dollar payment to the group so they can buy land to form a reserve. Early indications are they aren't going to be more happy living on a reserve. To celebrate the band held a pow-wow including dancing competitions and singing competitions. It cost 500,000 dollars. Some band members raised questions and an audit shows half the money is unaccounted for. Most of that money went for "cash prizes" for the singing and dancing. Also included was an untendered 190,000 contract for the chief's son to videotape the 2 day affair. http://www.cbc.ca/...ed-payouts-1.4284606 Local farmers are refusing to sell land to the group because they are worried about things like drainage systems being taken out of commission where they cross native lands. It really has made for a happy situation.

Don't have to wear your lifejacket. Just have one in the boat. Geez, learn the damned rules.

So do those of us who are already citizens have to observe the treaties?

P.S - Can you tell me how to do that?

Thank you for your attention to this very important matter.

Well for me it means watching the Indians-Natives-Aborignial-Indigenous-First Nations People plant wild rice all over the place in the lake my In-Laws live on, which has made the southern end of the lake practically not navigable. And what can we do about it? Nothing.

I have a big problem with the smoke and mirrors show native bands put on to abuse their rights, especially when it comes to things like environmental stewardship.

I work in the construction industry. A few years ago rules changed regarding disposal of hazardous construction waste, like asbestos, that made renovation costs much higher. Unless you were in with one of the native bands, with whom you could pay some cash to then dump lead, asbestos, etc in a big, uncontained hole on their land, no questions asked.

I remember native bands making a fuss in the 80's and 90's about banning the whale hunt as infringing on their traditions. But I don't recall their ancestors hunting whales with zodiacs and rifles.

What makes you think you have a say in what's right for the lake? You're just a Settler. You have no claim.

Not quite accurate that no one who perpetrated the wrongs against the indegenous people of Canada are alive. One of the bigger crimes was the residential school program and that ran until the mid 60's. Not that I disagree that we need to move forward and stop dwelling on the past so much but, it takes both parties to do that, and one is still trying to extract maximum benefits from the past. Frustrating but hard to blame them, most of us would do it if we could too.

yep yep on all accounts, I come from the mining industries and watching what farmers get away with hurts me right in the feels. Count me as a triggered millennial.

The reservations in South Dakota are the poorest counties in the US and are basically giant super fund sites.

RE natives and their "traditions" a 500' monofilament gill net is a longs ways off what their ancestors used. They don't need the fish because they are starving, that friggin casino next door pulls plenty of money in for the tribe.

My current employer just received a PO for a project in Nunavut, glad to see the Inuit act lines in our PO are scratched.

Yes there are a lot of damaged people from that program. When you here the stories no wonder there is so much alcoholism and generalized brokenness. It is just so frustrating that we don't seem to be moving forward.

Hopefully one day soon we can all move on to something more productive in the relationship, I don't think we have a choice but it means both sides have to accept some compromises and I'm not sure either are yet.
