Ford and Domino’s Pizza are teaming up to test self-driving pizza delivery cars
Quote | Reply
It's cool to be part of the revolution on day 1. And where are the pizza drones?

"Ford and Domino’s Pizza are teaming up to test self-driving pizza delivery cars in Michigan, as part of an effort to better understand how customers respond to and interact with autonomous vehicles.

In the coming weeks, randomly selected Domino’s customers in Ann Arbor, Michigan will have the option to accept pizza deliveries from a Ford Fusion Hybrid autonomous research vehicle. But the car won’t be driving itself.

Each car will be driven by a Ford safety engineer, with other researchers onboard, who will zero in on the last 50 feet of the customer experience."

So ... Domino's - the company that was sued for multiple driving accident deaths due to their 30 minute guarantee, is teaming up with Ford - the company that brought us the exploding car.

Ah, but think about the savings you will accrue on not having to pay a tip.

You know if it was cheaper to use 16 year old kid they'd be using them right? I wonder how much they're actually going to save a year using automation?

Probably not much for a couple years as the car isn't autonomous and will be driven by a Ford engineer.

It's a pretty good idea. The car won't be autonomous, but it'll be doing all the maths and operations an autonomous vehicle would be doing, and collecting that data. And comparing what it would have done vs. what the human driver actually did. That's valuable stuff.

Every autonomous car effort has fleets of cars doing this.

If you're doing it, you might as well be providing a real service. Ford gets information about how people interact with autonomous vehicles. Dominos gets free delivery and, presumably, a foot in the door for being a preferred customer when the cars go legitimately full auto in 5-15 years from now.

I agree. Seems like a reasonable plan to develop an autonomous vehicle. But as a dedicated pizza delivery vehicle, it seems like overkill. Why a whole car and not the robots as mentioned in the article? Maybe even a drone. I'd want my pizza delivered to my door.

Alternatively, why couldnt i use a regular autonoumous car? Just send it to pick up and bring it to me. The 16 yo can put the pizza in the car for me.

I get the premise, it just feels like gimmicky publicity and advertising. But nothing is wrong with that.

You really need to patent or whatever the phrase wimp chill. I am stealing that for folks they complain about Montana winters.
And yeah, myself included, did side jobs delivering pizza to help pay for university. Lose that to automation and then we are bitching about student loan costs and how lazy kids are. Double edges swords

Nothing for the first 10 years unless ford eats the cost for the vehicles

All kidding aside, the insurance industry is probably feeling a bit threatened at the moment. One of their revenue sources, automotive consumers is probably going to shrink significantly in the next 20 years. So, where are they going to shift their focus to regain lost revenues? Health care? Commercial? Residential? They'll get it back but at what price to the rest of the economy?

Nationwide has been talking about the threats from this for a while. And not just autonomous vehicles but all the driver assist is also reducing accidents.

But the feeling is that with autonomous vehicles the whole structure of insurance and determining fault will change.

Commercial is pretty profitable but there is limited room for growth there. Auto is the foot in the door for most companies. If it radically changes the industry will have to remake itself. They are in fact pretty concerned.

I'm beginning to think that we are much more fucked than I thought.

I can see fully autonomous vehicles being a threat if they don't have to be insured. But it seems like driver assist reducing accidents is a good thing for insurance companies, since drivers are still required to have insurance. It just means less insurance payouts.

Less wrecks = lower premiums = lower revenue = less money to invest

The ratio of loss to premium is frequently >1. The profit comes from investments.

I think a thing we will also see very soon with these cars and others is cameras becoming standard. Having cameras won't reduce accidents but it will help to determine who is at fault. No more he said/she said.
