I enjoy martinis but for me it has to be Gin. I really like Hendricks, a tiny bit of vermouth and then garnish with a cucumber.

Lately I've been on a bourbon kick so haven't had one in a while. Need to change that...

Which is evidence Bond was a wuss when it came to drinking. Shaking causes the ice to break apart, watering down the drink much more than stirring.

I like a martini from time to time, but I think it's just a euphemism so people don't have to say "I'd like a glass of vodka please, drop an olive or two in there while you're at it."

Particularly true with the modern penchant for ordering martinis 'dry'. To the extent there was any cocktail expertise involved in the traditional drink, it's going the way of the dodo now that people don't want much/any vermouth in it.

I do like the various snobby descriptions of how to make a good martini though, e.g., "pour 4 oz of gin into a martini glass; place a bottle of vermouth on the table next to the glass and let the sun shine through it onto the glass for precisely 30 seconds; garnish with an olive and serve."

No.

If you’re a geek of Bond or drinks, you’d be right to point out that Bond’s first martini order, that which perhaps forms his ‘drinking roots’, is not a vodka drink. But then, if we look at his most famous martini order, nor are his roots in gin. Indeed Bond’s first Martini included both - his Vesper in Ian Fleming’s first book, Casino Royale, was a mix of gin, vodka and Kina Lillet, shaken.
But away from the Vesper in his earliest incarnations, the 1954 novel Live and Let Die, for example, Bond did order vodka martinis. Like most alcohol, he enjoyed a bit of vodka and in the first book even specified Russian or Polish, the two ‘authentic’ vodka nations, while also indicating he prefers a grain vodka, which Belvedere is.

It doesn't prove he's a wuss. It just shows he's not drinking a Martini. He's drinking a Bradford.

I thought a Bradford was a shaken gin martini. Can you have a vodka Bradford?

Regardless of the name, he is a wuss b/c he needed his alcohol to be watered down.

Lots of drinking going on in a two hour film.

Well, technically, a Martini is made with gin. A "Vodka Martini" is made the same as a Martini (stirred) but with vodka in place of gin. A Bradford is a Martini that is shaken instead of stirred. So I suppose that if you make it with vodka and shake it, it's really a Vodka Bradford.

I make a pretty mean LIT. I was a bartender for about 15 years. 10 years or so at a popular local spot that had a great HH on Fridays. I would make 100's of them between 5-7 on Friday.
They have a bad rap that it's a rookie drink. Also because of all the different liquors in them and the insuing headache rookies would get.
I know a few adults who drink them. Use homemade sour mix, good liquor and not rail stuff (Cointreau is your friend here) , shake is important with this drink and float a little grand marnier on the top !

I use top shelf stuff. No headaches for me and that's one reason I love them. I can have one with dinner and then I just maintain all night. Keep the buzz going! I'll try the Grand Marnier. Thx for the tip.

Have you ever had a stinger ?
I worked for a bar owner who that was one of his go to drinks. I like one every now and then with a cigar. Marie Bizarre and a good cognac is pretty good

I don't know. I refused to jump in the back of windy's windowless van to try it.
