Aside from coming from countries where illicit drug use is not common it seems these refugees have in mind a narrative for their lives which involves being okay about taking a job that most of us see as quite menial as a step to becoming more successful. The lack of this narrative which drug use seems to be a symptom of is quite sad. Reminds me of Allan Bloom's book, "The .closing of the American Mind" where as an atheistic Jew he talks with some admiration about the myth (using the term meaning as great story) he grandparents lived.
