i find these kinds of things fascinating. i have grown to believe simply based on what i see that mobilizing people via social channels has reached its highest art form in politics: that if companies like mine, for example, were really serious about learning about social outreach we'd find the true specialists in politics and in politically motivated movements.

anybody here an expert in this? are the best social channel specialists in politics simply because politics pays the most money? who's down here at ground level who understands this? i certainly don't.

Looking in the LR is only going to find wet noodles. These guys ain't doing nuthin'. Anybody with a backbone has been chased away by now.

So how many rallies or social functions have you attended in the last year. I haven't been to any, therefore I have no backbone. I'm not sure what I meant by a wet noodle......

Which message would that be? The fake racism message, the fake hatred of women message or the face anti Lqbtebdjfjfnfjsksj message? The only message that was real was the one about people being pissed that their side lost. Everything else was lies and manufactured by the usual Soros/ BLM radicals manipulating useful idiots.

i was actually just thinking about the mechanism, primarily for race production. it seemed to me that race producers (as one example) could learn a lot from political activists. i'd be just as interested in hearing from the guy who organized trump's rallies as the person who organized social media for the women's march.

or, a rave. how does a rave happen? could you get 5000 people to show up for something on a 24hr notice? i couldn't.

AFAIK, the Women's March was intended to be a victory dance after Hillary's election and turned into something else.

I feel like kind of a "fuddy-duddy" myself, in that a high-school friend let me know in advance via FB about the march in Washington D.C. What I didn't know at the time was that simultaneous marches were going on here in Las Vegas. Not that I necessarily would have attended, but I found out too late to even decide.

Linkedin is a fairly dead end channel imo. Never cutting edge enough, for a while a decent place to look for or advertise for a job, but eventually passed by glassdoor or even craigslist. Once msft acquired it, it got even worse.

Next races on the schedule: none at the moment

i have never been a drug taker. not even pot. never once. no drugs ever. but sometime before i die i'd like to try LSD. and i mean, not long before i die. of course who knows when he's going to die.

i just don't need another habit, so i'd like to start taking drugs when i'm going to be dying soon.

Well hallucinogens, or at least "magic" mushrooms which are basically a lighter version of LSD, have shown some promise with helping people deal with the emotional challenges of end of life type situations. So you should get on that.

Also mushrooms and LSD typically have just the opposite effect of being habit forming, people generally lose interest after they've done them some rather than feeding into more use.

there are different schools of thought about this. one is that, yes, social media and communications tech have made this kinds of mobilizations possible and revolutionized how we do this stuff. people tweeting during the arab spring, for instance, or obama raising tonnes of money online through microdonations.

on the other hand, some say it's nothing new and it's not even as good as it used to be: in the 1960's protest marches had way higher numbers and were run without any tech at all. hell, woodstock still beats coachella any day of the week.

i think you'll find malcolm gladwell has moaned about 'slacktivism' and the idea that mobile tech makes it easy to get passively involved in a cause (ie., by tweeting about it, or doing an ice-bucket challenge, or something) but that it doesn't translate well enough to actual, boots-on-ground action.

no expert, and late to the thread as usual, but saw what happened..
Started with a Facebook post on 11/9, mushroomed from there. I found out about it on Twitter either that day or the next day. Told my wife I was going to march, she said 'but it's for women ?'

No-one was paid to organize it, and it wasn't political. It's just when you threaten people and have a long history of violent abuse, then get elected president, it gets their attention. Since we still had freedom of speech and assembly on Jan 21, it was possible to organize a march. We took the train downtown to the Denver march, it was full of women - trains full of women ! two nice old ladies of 84 and 85 in our compartment told us they had to march sixty years ago for women's rights, and they don't plan to stop as long as the attacks don't stop. Back then women could not have credit cards, and married women could not open bank accounts in their own names.

They let me march, even though I'm an old white guy.

I grew up in a country without freedom of speech or assembly, and I know how it happens. Protests now might be able to stop things before it gets to fighting in the streets.

Also read Zeynep Tufekci for perspective, the smartest writer I know on these subjects.

Oh, and shall we discuss the number of rapes that occur while people are on ecstasy? Yes alcohol is a problem in this country however, if you are so unaware of the affects of hallucinogens and/or long term use of pot, LSD, heroin, meth, etc. I feel for you and I feel for anyone you are giving advise to.

Seriously irresponsible post on your part.
