Pretty interesting stuff. People loved Nixon until Watergate and even then his lowest approval rating was still higher than the lowest seen by Truman. GHWB had a much higher approval rating than most others even he was voted out office. Ford when from a 71% approval to 37% in 5 months.

Yeah, average approval ratings don't really tell the story, I don't think. After all, Pres Bush (1) was way up there and he couldn't get elected to a second term.

The final approval numbers are more indicative of opinion, because they incorporate a cumulative judgment of the entire presidency. Of course, they overweight the most recent events (especially for Nixon). Here is a basic score balancing Final and Average approval ratings:

Roosevelt - 65%
Kennedy - 64%
Eisenhower - 62%
Clinton - 60%
GHW Bush - 58.5%
Reagan - 58.4%
Obama - 54%
Johnson - 52%
Ford - 50%
GW Bush - 41%
Carter - 40%
Truman - 39%
Nixon 36.5%

History has been kinder to Truman.

3 - 5 million of them. Also, if you exclude California it would look a lot different.
