I have a cheapie scanner, I use it when I go to buy cars now. If you know what your doing you can check the codes and you also know how to tell if the codes have been recently deleted (like if you were to delete right before I checked the car out). This has saved me before (but MAY have pissed off some people trying to sell me their car, lol)

P0171 can be a bastard to diagnose. Often are vacuum leak or MAF related.
My car just threw it (along with P1101)... the actual problem was that I mangled the oil filler lid gasket when I did an oil change last week.
