I've lived long enough to see demand for Arabic, then Japanese, now Russian, and I expect Mandarin will be next fashionable language, based on whose money and/or influence rolls through America.

The one language that I never studied in school that I could put to use now AND in the future is Spanish.

Depends a bit what you do for work. I was near fluent in Spanish graduationg high school, and have never used it professionally and only occasionally socially. Learmed some french and German as an adult. But Arabic, Mandarin, Japanese, German, French, Finnish, and Danish, in order, would have been more useful.

Our high school requires mandarin.
