Trump & The Sport of Cycling
I did not know if this was best posted here or on the main forum, but since at it's roots it's really about politics, I'll go with here.

I found this yesterday, and I must admit that I had forgot about it completely. Donald Trump did have a significant and relevant role in the birth of modern professional cycling in the United States - https://www.linkedin.com/...*1&trk=prof-post

This is a great read! Well worth the time. The Tour de Trump was a game-changer for professional cycling in the U.S., and Trump had a key role in it all. Then as now it was typical Trump - of course his name had to be on it and front & center, and he was blustering and blundering on and on that the race would be bigger and better than the Tour de France one day!

If you follow the arc of the Tour de Trump and then the Tour DuPont, there may be an argument made that without the former, there may have been no Lance Armstrong!

"Tour de Trump" is the term my riding buddies and I use for a ride the morning after consuming too much Mexican/Indian food and beer.

I assume you are talking about the indirect connection between the Tour de Trump and Lance Armstrong that I made.

That's a great question, but also a REALLY wide open question, that no matter what you say, is bound to be controversial.

Regarding the success of Lance and the 7 TDF wins, according to the UCI/ASO, they did not happen and don't exist! While, right, that is an absurd position - he did win those races, and millions of people watched and cheered( I'm not saying that's right nor do I side with Armstrong - just stating a fact).

Indeed, in a way this central part is before the courts now in the Armstrong vs The U.S. Government Whistle Blower case. The U.S. Government contends that it was all a fraud and moot, because Armstrong by his own admission, did break and breach key parts of his contract. They want $100 million back. Armstrong and his lawyers contend that the USPS gained substantially from the exposure (valued at dollar amountX)- on that part they claim they delivered and more! As I said, millions watched and cheered. As a barometer of this, Trek bike sales rose SUBSTANTIALLY, during Armstrong's TDF run! And they tailed off, when he stepped away from the sport for the first time. So there is a connection.

The insertion of Lance is unnecessarily... provocative.

Nobody in America uses the term Trump. Hell, last time I heard it the UK was probably the early 80's. About the last time I heard "Gordon Bennett"

I know of three people :)

But yes, you're right that it's basically not used here in the US but as a child of the 80's in the UK it still makes me chuckle. As does the name "Ivana Trump".

Yes, I know - skating on thin ice here.

Over on the main forum the mere mention of his name provokes, bedlam and hysteria, with Dan having to frequently wade in and play policeman. Perhaps, the discussion can be more balanced here! :)

There's no doubt people are polarized on LA. Just look at the string of posts after any of his tweets or Instagram postings. Many are in the vein of "You are a true Hero, Lance", sprinkled with , "Fucking cheater"!

Fleck, I remember when the T de T rolled through Phoenicia. In my slanted view having the cycling pros come through was the coolest thing to ever happen to my little two block long town. It was marred only by the fact that the day before a lot of them had to walk their bikes up Platt Clove Rd in the Devil's Kitchen. I know your wife has made that climb and I know that it kills me. But, pro cyclists walking their bikes; WTF!

I think you are giving Trump way to much credit here. First of all, it wasn't his idea, he was just the guy the they talked into sponsoring it. It probably came from NBC sports or IMG or one of the other sports promoters of the time. And like other things Trump got involved in, it went bust only to be saved and moved south by Dupont. So rather than the string going from Trump to Lance, it should go from Trump to Dupont to Team Fox Catcher. And we know how that ended up. (for those who don't, there is the movie)

Indeed - it was someone else's idea (detailed in the story), and it was Trump's money, and some of his organization of the time involved, but ounce on-board, Trump HAD to be the front-man and it was all about about him!

Back then there were frequent Trump sightings around Hunter. It was rumored that he was looking for a place to build a casino. That's why there was a big protest when the T de T went into New Paltz. The joke around Hunter was that he would by the Sugar Maples Resort (which really existed) and change the name to ''Marla Maples"!

Jim,

Thanks for the responses.

I appreciate the anecdote about the Devils Kitchen climb - perhaps one of the toughest climbs in the U.S. North East. It's not that long, but at that max steepness of close to 20% for about 200m, it's absolutely insane!

That must have been quite the site, of the best Pro cyclists in the world walking up it. This would have been before the days of compact cranks, and the smallest gear available would have been on a standard crank set-up of 39-23 or 25. Yikes!

Thanks for the link, I had totally forgotten about that race!

Steve Bauer ran front and rear disc wheels in the time trial, and wiped out. It inspired my brother and I to try it (with our UniDisc covers) and the result was pretty close to the same but we barely stayed upright.

I still don't have my Team 7-11 jersey that I wanted, either!

I thought so to, which is why I, um, clicked on the link. It's website with nothing but picture galleries. Sadly, no ass.
