You realize there's more to a successful show than just comic chops, though? I think Conan's funny, but he's had his flops too. Networks, time slot demographics, they all factor into the mix.
I do prefer Stewart's looser mensch schtik however, over Colbert's more buttoned-down style (even though it worked well for his old show, it's hard for him to break out of that 'character' and I agree it got kinda worn). But I've seen him do bits of other stuff and some of it is hilarious. He just needs a little better situational scripting, where Stewart is better equipped to wing it.
Fair enough.
He still isn't funny, though.
In his own echo chamber he gets applause and accolades which may have just made him lazy. He can say something with a goofy expression on his face like, "republicans are stupid!", and a bunch of people will cheer.
But it's just not really funny.
