At the daily White House press briefing Wednesday, reporters raised with Press Secretary Scott McClellan a bombshell story from Iraq carried earlier Wednesday in The New York Times and wire services, based on a CIA report. Essentially, the questions at the White House boiled down to: Has the invasion and occupation of Iraq actually created more terrorists than it has crushed, and also given them much-needed experience in killing Americans and others?

According to the classified CIA report, the Iraq insurgency poses an international threat and may produce better trained Islamic terrorists than the 1980s Afghanistan war that gave rise to Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda.

i think it's a bit difficult to win hearts and minds of the iraqi people when bush, et. al. are now saying, "hey, we turned iraq into the premier battleground between terrorists and our troops, and that's good, since our military can fight them rather than them attacking our civilians". or stated differently, "better over there with you, than over here with us".

now don't get me wrong, it is better for us that our troops are engaging these people and we have some better ideas as to their location so that they can't spring attacks on civilians. but to state that openly surely isn't a great way to win friends and influence people amongst rank and file iraqis. it runs the real risk of alienating people and pushing them to the other side.
