Chicago advice/help?
I'm organizing a small bachelor party for a few guys in Chicago May 20-22; it's a city I've never been to.
A few questions for those in the know:
-We want to check out a Cubs game, and it appears it's a Cubs/White Sox game...I expect tickets will be gone or sold out. Any advice on where to buy them?
-Good places to stay, either near Wrigley or near fun parts of town?
-What are some fun places to go/bars etc?
-Good solid steak restaurant...money's not an issue.

Thanks for the help.

For the steak I'd recomend Ruth Chris's. I'm sure you will hear lots of other suggestions and you probably can't go too wrong with any of them. Just avoid The Sizzler.

There are far too many bars\clubs to list. Do you know what type of bar you want to spend time at? I'm a huge fan of blues music, and when in Chicago I always try to hang out at Buddy Guy's Legends. The Admiral Club (if memory serves - it's been awhile) is a fun strip club featuring $10 lap dances.

I would consider staying at a hotel downtown, maybe in the north end of the loop off of or close to Michigan and taking the L to Wrigley.

You must have a pizza at Giordonos while you are there. I have driven from St Louis to Chicago for no other reason than to indulge in their stuffed spinach. It's a litle bit of heavan on earth.

Thanks for the help. I think it won't be a big music-loving group (I am, but the rest are not)...mostly three guys looking for a fun bar, that caters to not college but still young and fun crowd.

Any specific advice regarding hotels? And does Giordonos deliver?

Thanks. Matt

Others that live in Chicago will be able to help much more than I can. I'm lucky - my favorite little sister has a swank apartment 40 floors up on State and Superior. I always crash there when I visit.

Giordonos does deliver, but I imagine that the delivery zones will be limited, so it will probably depend where you are. My above mentioned sister is 2 or 3 blocks from their flagship location, so when there is a 2.5 hour wait for a table we just have it sent to her pad and we are enjoying it 45 minutes later.

You will have hundreds of bars to choose from that cater to what you are looking for. Maybe try some Chicago web sites.

THere are quite a few "ticket brokers" (Scalper? Who you calling a scalper? I provide a service, and this service costs money...) online who sell Cubs tickets, and there are a couple of them right next to Wrigley. Expect to pay out your ass for them.

-Good places to stay, either near Wrigley or near fun parts of town?

Well, I stay at my plce near Wrigley, but it's full right now ;) Most hotels are downtown, which may not be that fun in and of itself, but with the train (EL) it's very easy to get to Wrigleyville on the Red Line.-What are some fun places to go/bars etc?

Near Wrigley, you'll find a dozen sports bars, an Irish bar (The Irish Oak), a cheesy singles dance bar (John Barleycorns) a couple reggae clubs (Exodus and the Wild Hare) an improv comedy club (though the premier comedy is probably Second City, a farther south of Wrigleyville), among many others...-Good solid steak restaurant...money's not an issue.

Plenty of choices, and Ruth Chris is a good suggestion, but if it were me, I'd go for a non-chain place. Two of my favorites are the Chicago Chop House and the Capital Grille (the latter known for its dry-aged steaks). Another really excellent one is Smith and Wollensky. Of course there's Charlie Trotter's, very famous although I've never had the chance to go there.

Great idea with the Chop House. I second that vote. And if he can get a table at Trotters in only a couple of weeks notice he indeed deserves to be the best man...

Stay at one of the hotels near the loop, off of Michigan Ave or Lakeshore Drive, a place like the Fairmont. Everything will be easily accessible from there (including a great running path along the lakefront). It's just a short train to Wrigley for the game and some very cool bars. Pretty much any bar you go to on game night in Wrigleyville will be great.

As far as steaks go, everything mentioned so far is very good, but you may want to try some "hometown" , historical steak houses. My favorite is Gene and Georgetti's...serious Chicago here. Also, Gibson's....great atmosphere, but you could find better steaks at some of the other places. Finally, don't forget about Morton's...probably the best wine list (Capital Grille would be second) of the bunch.

All of these steakhouses are close to the Michigan Ave hotel area, as well as some great night spots. Division and Rush bars are very active, but very touristy, so they won't be your typical Chicago spots...they're still very fun.

You'll have a great time!

Tickets - you can get them online at stubhub.com or I think ticketsonline.com OR you can get them at game there are always people trying to sell them, I usually go to Murphy's Bleachers before game and you can find scalpers there while enjoying a beer. Wrigley rocks! Wrigley is much better than Sox Game.

Stay in loop or River North. Not any good hotels near wrigley. The W seems to be hip new hotel.

Bars - After Cubs Game: Tons of bars near wrigley, Murphy's Bleachers is my favorite, there is also Sports Corner, Cubby Bear, and many others.

Otherwise go to State and Division, tons of bars and clubs.

Steak - I prefer Gibsons or Mortons. Nine is also good, trendy more expensive joint.

Admiral Club for that special bachelor party entertainment!

Stub hub would be your best bet. For Cubs/Sox look to pay $50-$60 per ticket for upper deck.

-Good places to stay, either near Wrigley or near fun parts of town?

Search hotels.com for gold coast. The gold coast is North Michigan ave. You will be close to lots of stuff by walking or short cab ride. CTA service can be poor on weekends and at night, cabs are a better bet.

Depends on your age – or should I say the age of the people you want to hang with. Lake view is the post college crowd (if you want to sound like a local, the area around Wrigley is called lake view not Wrigleyville.) DePaul is the college crowd. Old Town is the Yuppie crowd (do they still call people Yuppie’s?). Wicker Park, Bucktown and Lincoln Square also have lots of bars/clubs. Metromix is a good online guide. http://metromix.chicagotribune.com/
Skip the strip bars, Chicago is not Vegas….

-Good solid steak restaurant...money's not an issue.

I really like Nine, it’s more hip the then old school. The bonus with Nine – its five blocks east of Mission Bay! If you looking for an Old school spot, try Gibson’s in the famous ‘Viagra Triangle’ – and truth be told, Ditkas is dam good. Plus – you may run into ‘Da Coach’.

MFreeman72:

Let me begin by stating that most of the information you've received is good, but please ignore the statement "Wrigley is much better than Sox Game." as the author of that statement obviously lives in the suburbs. Without getting into too much detail about which stadium is better, I'd just like to point out that the Cubs are currently sub 500 (12 and 16 = .429) while the White Sox currently have THE BEST RECORD IN BASEBALL (22 and 7 = .759). If you do happen to get tickets to the Sunday Cubs/Sox game at Wrigley, please remember to bring a broom for the Cubs.

Secondly - Congratulate your friend for making your job impossible. Not only are the White Sox at Wrigley (making that the one of the hardest tickets the season and impossible for a group), but it's also the weekend before the restaurant convention. I don't know what happens at a restaurant convention, but apparently ALOT of people come to town and drive up hotel rates. Additionally, since they are in the restaurant business, they flood all the high end restaurants. Unfortunately for you, this is the "perfect storm" for bachelor party planners.

Consider the following:

Ideas for Wrigley:

1) Wrigley is all sold out, and it didn't matter because they're freakin' terrible with groups anyway. If you need the baseball experience, try going to Cubby Bear, Slugger's, Bernie's, High-Tops, Murphy's or Goose Island Wrigleyville --- You'll drink so much that no one will notice you're not actually at the game. Quite frankly, the whole Wrigley experience is really in the neighborhood outside the park, rather than inside. Just to give you an idea how bad things are inside Wrigley - if you do get into Wrigley, you'll be forced to drink "Old Style". For this, the groom may never forgive you.

2) Try to get reservations to a rooftop - Not sure how rich you are, it may cost you about $200 a person - on the plus side, it usually includes food, beer, and drunk women in halter tops. -- http://www.thecubdom.com/features/wrigleyrooftop_overview.html. Unfortunately, if it rains, you've just wasted $200 a person.

3) Consider abandoning the Wrigley idea- The Preakness Stakes is Saturday - rent a bus and just go to the Arlington Park (They'll simulcast the race). Of course, the cheaper alternative is the OTB on State street. Also, if your interested in "gaming", consider the casinos in nearby (30-45min) Indiana.

For a good steak, any of the restaurants mentioned - Chicago Chop House, Gibson's, Gene and Georgetti's, Smith and Wollenskey's, or Morton's would be good. Morton's just opened a new location on East Wacker St. that my have more availability because it's new and unknown. Gibson's and Gene/Gerogetti's would be the choice of the locals and more suited to a bachelor party. Smith and Wollensky's it's not that well known in Chicago, so it's generally not that crowded, and as an added bonus, they have outside seating.

For your entertainment - The Admiral Theater is in the middle of nowhere ($20-25 cab ride from downtown) - they don't serve liquor, but there is a dive bar next door that has cheap beer a pool table (bring quarters).

Other (non-adult) entertainment near the city center- Second City, Buddy Guy's Legends, Andy's Jazz club, Blue Chicago.

Other things to do to kill time: The Bodyworlds exhibit at the Museum of Science is excellent and also the Nazi submarine may be reopened by then. Hey, where else can you see a Nazi submarine?

Hotels: Hotel Intercontinental on Michigan Ave. has a 25Yrd. pool .... Hard Rock Hotel and W are the new "in" hotels - no pools.

The only benefit of the restaurant show is that they sponsor a 10K race on Sunday -http://www.restaurant.org/show/events/course.cfm - It's downtown, only $20, and they have good food, beer (at 9:00AM?!?!?!), and raffle prizes afterwards. It usually sells out a couple weeks before the race.

Good Luck, enjoy your stay, and dress warm(ly).

Let us know what you end up doing - if you remember any of it.

True - and an excellent choice

True - if the original poster is from Atlanta, Florida, or anywhere in Canada he's going to be really disappointed.

You really think that going to US Cellular is a better experience than going to Wrigley? I lived in the city for 10 years and it was always much easier and much more fun going to Wrigley than going to the ever so empty US Cellular. At this point in time the Sox may be a better team than the Cubs, but Wrigley is a much better place to see a game, even Sox fans will admit that.

Arlington Park instead of Wrigley? Arlington is in my back yard, Ive worked there, it doesnt compare to the Wrigley experience.

Yes! - Sure, Wrigley has a better neigherhood atmosphere, but if you talking about actually going into the stadium and watching the game - The Cell is much better.

Well, I never said it did- I was just giving the guy options. Depending on how large his group is - Arlington does a good job with group outings.

This coming from someone who visits Chi town once a every year for the Chicago Marathon:

- Stay at a hotel on N. Michigan Ave, namely the Westin, Intercontinetal, Crowne Plaza, Drake, or Hard Rock. I found the W to be a bit non-heterosexual. A bit too art-deco for my taste (the floor I was on had pink and green flourecent lights in the hallway, although the lobby mens room has one-way glass looking into the womens).

- Stay away from any ballpark that is home to AL team with a designated hitter. That's not baseball.
