Honeymoon Ideas
My wife and I (married a couple of weeks ago) are planning on taking our honeymoon for approximately two weeks between Dec. 18th through Jan. 2nd. Does anyone have any destination suggestions for that time period? We both have passports and our budget is business class (i.e. Greyhound, Amtrack, coach, business class, first class). Thanks.

Congratulations - one word for you - Europe!!

Great time of year to dot around and see different parts. Others will chime in with their favourites, but as long as you end your trip in Edinburgh for New Year's Eve I won't be upset with you...

Have you been to Southeast Asia? Thailand is great. Ask Mr. Demerly as he was recently there. Your dollar will go much further than in Europe and you can go somewhere warm as well. The type of activities that interest you and your wife will influence where you stay. There are beaches and great reefs for scuba diving or snorkeling, bustling cities, historic Wats (temples), spas etc and the northern region is mountainous. You will also be a short and inexpensive flight from other destinations in the region.

Good luck and Congrats on the wedding.

Tulum, Mexico (the Zamas Resort in particular). When my wife and I were there out of the 7 days we were the only guest for 4 of them. Nice beach, great food, nice bungalows. It is about an hour south of Cancun and about 15 minutes from the only coastal aztec pyramids. The guy who runs it is from San Fransico and when I was booking my room I asked how far it was to the beach his reply was it is on the beach. I wasn't thinking and asked him again he said when the sand gets washed away they pick up the bungalows and move them. Oh, on the beach. All that for about $50 / day with side trips. You can get the same thing in Cancun for about $150 / day.

There is nice scuba diving spots on the local reefs, Xaha isn't too far away (30 minutes).

I also recommend Hobart, Tasmania.

I didn't expand much on Vegas before, but that's where I went on my honeymoon, and we had a great time. Lot's to do besides gamble with shows, restaurants, even just walking the strip to see the casinos. Amazing stuff. Lake Meade and the hoover damn are nearby for watersports picnic type stuff. Helicopter tours of the Grand Canyon. Golf courses, pools, buffets. Lot's to do and you don't have to spend too much if you don't want to.

I am intruiged by Vegas I have to admit, although I think I will have trouble convincing my wife to be when we get round to organising our honeymoon next fall. Is going to Vegas without gambling like going to Six Flags without going on any rides?

Only if you really really like gambling. When I went, we spent very little time gambling. I played some Balckjack and my wife played some slots. we did this at various casinos to try our hands at the different machines since there are a lot of theme machines (Wheel of Fortune slots, Monopoly slots, etc) But most of our time we did other stuff. we went on a small plane tour of the Grand Canyon that was fun. We went to the Hoover Damn and did that tour, and then spent a day at Lake Meade. Pretty cool. We saw shows almost every night. the shows are a great excuse to get dressed up and go out to a nice dinner if that's what you're into. We saw a couple Cirque de Soleil shows that were amazing, and a couple standard vegas musical type shows, but there's a lot of different shows to go to. You can do magic, showgirls, variety, Broadway type musicals, etc, etc. Almost anything you want. We spent a significant amount of time just walking around the hotels. Some of them are absolutely amazing in scope and design. There are, in fact, roller coaster if you want to do that. Arcades, boardwalk type games (ski ball, etc) The buffets can be really amazing, and the regular restaurants are even better. We spent one evening at Treasure Island and got a restaurant reservation for dinner thatset us up right next to the window out onto the lagoon. Between courses we were able to watch the whole pirate ship show that goes on from our table. hotel rooms are pretty inexpensive compared to other places, because they're just trying to get you into the hotels hoping you'll spend money gambling. We spent about a week, and had a great time. There were still things we wished we had done, and we went back several times over the next couple years to try some of those, or to do things again that we did the first time.

Curse you: now I want to go (again - I spent a night there ten years ago on a road trip from from LA to Boston after I graduated. I got food poisoning and was getting over it all the way from Vegas to New Orleans. Not comfortable in a VW camper van holding 5 of us).

I will have to print off your post and use that as my script rather than my memories.

Here's a decent list of things to do besides gamble. you might be able to sell your significant other on this stuff. One thing we did that my wife really loved was go to the Stratosphere tower for desert one night. after a show we went to the tower, went up to the rotating restaurant and had desert. Just some drinks and desert spent in a romantic setting with a great view. good stuff. Oh, and we took a nice gondola ride at the Venetian. She liked that one too.

My wife and I are going to Western Australia to do Ironman Western australia -- That is our Honeymoon. Then we are traveling down to the Margret River Area for some R&R.

I would say your Honeymoon should fit your personality -- are you beach people or Snow bunnies?? Want to ski or bask in the sun?? Eco Adventure or relax in luxury?? Shopoholics (Christmas Shopping) or isolationists wanting to get awat from it all??

What interests you?? I bet if you tell the board - they will come up with some great ideas.

In regards to the post above, Vegas and anything remotely related to a race is out of the question. We live in Southern California and go to Sin City every year or two. I was basically looking for ideas from other board members based on their past experiences. Currently, we only have ideas of places we would like to go (i.e. Hawaii, Japan, Tahiti, Belize, and the Caribbean). Looking at the calendar, I feel we have to make a decision pretty soon. Thanks.

My husband and I took a Carribean cruise. We liked it because we went to a lot of different places, but only had to unpack once. Lots of good food and drink. Very relaxing.

I went with wife #1 to the Caribbean and to Hawaii with my current wife. I really have to say I enjoyed Hawaii more. We spent 5 days on Maui and 5 days on the big island. Our stay in Kona was one of the reasons I started doing triathlon. We have since been back and stayed on Kauai as well. I think there is a great variety of things to do in Hawaii and highly recommend it. We are returning to Hawaii next year for our 10th anniversary.

Japan is pretty good - great skiing up in Hokkaido, tropical down in Okinawa and lots of variety inbetween. The weather is pretty calm here then and although Christmas and New Year are smaller events (Chinese New Year is bigger) there is still a lot going on.

That said, I'm going on holiday in NZ from Dec 24-Jan 8! Remember that in the Southern Hemisphere Christmas is the middle of summer - BBQ's and the beach is the typical way to celebrate! I didn't have my first white Christmas until I was 30.
