Living with Mosquitos
We have moved

Perhaps night 2 or 3 in new house in new area which, it turns out is mosquito heaven, my wife was bitten 89 times and my eldest a bunch because we thought it was nice to leave windows open as its 35 during the day and stuffy at night

The youngest and i are ok though ;)

So we then shut up shop

Bathed in eucalyptus oil, closed the windows and now sweat are arses off which is unbearable

So how do you live when you have no AC and mosquitos

I am looking at window mozzie frame inserts to stop the bastards coming in

We use eucalyptus

I do not want AC if it can be avoided

The mozzies come from water at the bottom of the hill but he is not getting rid of his gardens so what can i do?

I'm guessing "mozzie frame inserts" might mean window screens? That should solve the problem inside the house.

A little diesel in the standing water should take care of future mosquito generations, though might be a bit hard on the garden.

May not help indoors, but my wife discovered that Victoria's Secret Bombshell perfume works as a mosquito repellent. So, if your wife is looking for something to keep them way when she's outside the house (assuming you can keep them out), but doesn't want to smell like traditional repellent, there is another option.

There are three kinds of people, those who can count, and those who can't.

As a Canadian, who the hell actually counts skeeter bites? FFS. Go buy some Off or Muskol or anything with 10,000% Deet in it. The shit works. Not liking the deet? Oh well West Nile must not be that bad then.

Only 89 bites? That would have been a good day in May up in Ontario cottage country.

As for stopping mosquitoes and being able to sleep I would suggest window screens. And turn off the light near doorways when you go in and out of the house.

Why is this even a question. Put screens on your windows like normal people.

I never understood why screens were not a thing in Europe. It does allow you to air out your house quickly, but who wants to deal with the buzzing in your ear at midnight.

Maybe even try an oscillating fan. A strong enough breeze may keep them at bay.

And by the way blog post with a number of supported links. Please review the links to the use of essential oils and children. But before you do any of that, go buy some window screens and some proper insect repellant. I personally know at least 4 victims of West Nile and 2 of Lyme disease. If you want to be a hero fine, use the anti-science bullshit repellants, after all Lyme disease might only knock a person back for a lifetime and West Nile is only a couple of bad years.

get some fans to start , buy some window screening rolls, scissors, and staple gun away till you find the screens you need.

Try dumping olive oil on the standing water - it coats the surface and smothers the mosquito larvae.

Our lawn fertilization/weed control company offers a mosquito control service. They guarantee it, but it's pricey ($350/summer for our home in a cul de sac, ~1/3 acre). I pressed their sales agent on the effectiveness of the spray if only I do it and not the neighbors. He claimed that it still works great, justifying it by saying musquitos don't travel far, don't live long, and spraying my property would kill off the ones here, prevent their breeding, and prevent others from crossing onto my property without dying. We ultimately decided against it because our property is generally not bad for insects, but we do still use a citronella candle if we're out on the deck hanging out.

Obviously...screens. But I mean...why the aversion to AC?

Areally you living in a tent? The civilized world invented winow screens in the 1840'same.

If you can't or won't do that try window AC units.

I'm beginning to think that we are much more fucked than I thought.

No aversion. Well not quite true as i lived with it 24/7 for 7 years in ME.

Immediate issue is cost but i am looking at portable AC as quick solution

When I was growing up, we had those types of bug zapper blue lights that killed mosquitoes. Those were quite effective and also served as a night light.

I also have the power to see through walls now, but YMMV.

where i live, the mozzies are plentiful and carry a lot of really ugly diseases. you've had good advice here, but i think the key message is there is no silver bullet - a combo approach is best.

-consider nets, which are cheap at camping shops.
-oscillating fans to cover the bed are a great idea.
-sleeping with some sort of deet spray on key areas is good
-screens on windows a must
-consider buying some permethrin or similar to spray the net, screens, curtains, and other spots where the bugs can get in
-deal with the standing water issue, somehow
-AC is ultimately the best but most complex fix

(are you back in switzerland? if so, the tropical health institutes in places like basel and zurich will sell you sprays fairly cheap.)

good luck,
-mike

We are in provence. Apparently tiger mosquitos are prevalent in 33 areas of france though no reported cases of dengue or zika this year ;)

So yesterday i had a guy over to make a screen. For reference they are not common. They exist but are not like the mozzies endemic.

I also caved this morning and bought 3 portable AC units as last night was unbearable compounded by some bad beer

Put one of these in your backyard. You'll have a full colony of purple martins to eat your mosquito.

So do they just think you are a wimp for not wanting eaten? Do they keep a houseful of geckos to eat the bugs?

I can tell when the dogs have scratched a small hole in my back screen door. Can't imagine how many bugs you'd get with no screens. I've got this vision of my house full of moths and Asian lady bugs.

I'm beginning to think that we are much more fucked than I thought.

Another idea is to get a few bat houses so the bats can eat the mosquitoes . But then you have to worry about bats getting in your house and Im sure you wife would love that!

Seriously, its common for no screens on windows? You must have a guy custom make a screen? Here, its you buy a window and they give you the screen that fits it.

North American bat house or European bat house?

Considering that Purple Martins are an North American swallow, I missed an opportunity to reply with something like this:

You failed hard. 50 Hail Marys for you and all will be forgiven.

Um, aren't all bat houses European since they originated from Transylvania?

I want to put one on my lot, but somehow need to hide it from the wife and neighbors, who will inevitably and inexplicably freak out because bats are "gross and scary." Um, yes, they look gross, but if you have access to a tennis racket you're the scary one. And they eat insects while I sleep. That makes them awesome.

Everything I know about rabies was learned from watching Cujo at an age far too young to watch Cujo. Someone should combine Cujo with Hitchcock's classic, The Birds, as an ultimate horror remake. If there can be a Snakes On A Plane, rabid bat attacks would be horror platinum!

I think the concern about bats in North America is rabies, but that's pretty close to eradicated in Europe.

Should be a company that will come out and spray for them. We did it this year and it is amazing. Can sit outside at night eating dinner and never see one.

As for your neighbor, I suggest Round up. :-)

And when you get guttering, leave it alone. Pay someone else to clean leaves out. My sister thought she would save a few bucks until the ladder she was using slipped on other leaves and mud. She is still recuperating from her broken shoulder over a year later.

Clearly a higher priority than being eaten alive. ;-)

Besides, I'd be more worried about the coming winter, as I take it that you live in an older structure.
